@mattvonruden9589, while there are expenses involved in digging for a gas line, $6,500 for a 70-foot trench is excessive. Deducting costs for the gas line, connections, and a pressure test, a knowledgeable person can complete the 70-foot trench in about an hour, costing no more than $150. However, issues arise if you encounter rocks or fail to dig at least 18 inches deep. Renting a trench machine for a day typically ranges from $200 to $260 and is a worthwhile investment. In conclusion, digging does come with expenses, but charging $6,500 for a gas line installation for that length is insanity. I run underground conduits all the time and if a client inquired about me running a 70' schedule 40 pvc in the ground it would be no where near what the plumber charges.

Thanks for the video. Is using a trencher pretty easy to figure out if I rent one from HD or is best left to someone with experience? (It woukdnt be as big as your trencher). Can I still dig down 2’ for sloping drainage pipe? What are the largest size rocks they can handle? (Golf ball size? Baseball size? Softball size…?) Is it possibly to trench up or down a 30 degree slope? On flat, if digging 2’ down is it best to go 2’ all in one pass or make multiple passes to get down, (only the last bit is 2’ deep).
@WalkerFarmFam
@WalkerFarmFam 3 ай бұрын
It’s easy enough to figure out. Get a quote from a professional and check how much you would be saving. I’m sure it would be worth it. I thing it will handle baseball size rocks with ease. The trench is only about 4” wide, not sure your size but it will do everything you mentioned. I would not go in passes, dig deep as you want the first pass. Good luck 👍🏼

Everything seems nice and easy unless you met with a confusion based on a certain discrepancy : ditch states it is 36" and what does it mean ? For me it means I can ditch a trench 3 ft deep ( NYS electric cable ground requirement). You showed only 18" deep. The question remains : Is it capable to dig 3 ft deep trench ? Second confusion is based on a feather light and soft soil you digged. My farm is on forest land with blue stone enclosure all around. Is it gonna work on such heavy terrain ?
@WalkerFarmFam
@WalkerFarmFam 2 жыл бұрын
Each machine is rated for different depths. If 36” is the requirement you would be digging maximum depth. Large rocks and tree roots are the toughest to dig through.

I need to run a line of new piping on my property, it will be from the water well to the water tank, and then from the water tank to the house. The property is hilly (not flat at all), and the dirt is pretty hard. I had a couple questions to see if you could help me out. 1. Since my land is very hilly (some areas are 5-10 feet higher in elevation than other areas), should I get the land graded a bit before trenching? I think it will be a pain if I try to grade the land later and hit and break a pipe, but maybe it would be ok if i know where the pipes are? 2. The dirt on my land is pretty hard and dry, would a trencher be able to rip through that or is a trencher only for soft soils?
@WalkerFarmFam
@WalkerFarmFam 3 жыл бұрын
If you are going to grade the land I would do it first to ensure the water line remains below the frost line. If you choose not to grade first the trencher should do fine going up and down. The trencher will go right through hard dirt, the only thing that will stop it is large rocks. Good luck with your project!
