In this video I take a range of military radios covering VHF and HF frequencies.

The plan was to work stations on 6m FM band plus HF from the back of my vehicle (aka the Unbelievable Jeff).
I use both the manpack radios (Clansmans and the RF-10) plus the Racal VRM5080 which is a radio previously used in tanks. All of these radios have now been decommissioned and put out for reuse by licenced radio operators.

I was Half expecting to see a load of Dolly Birds being Chased by Benny Hill when the music clip started playing 😍😊. Great editing with the fast and slow motion parts realy well done. At least with the Racal you have a good chance of repairing it yourself because all the servicing info is available and it's not fiddly surface mount stuff. Looking forward to finding out more about the wire Antenna you have, if you could do a Video on it when you find out that would be great. 73

Cheers Steve, a chap has just commented and shared the link I need. All I need is a tree and a AK47 Kalashnikov to operate it authentically it seems. The Racal got sent back for a replacement luckily. Yes the Benny Hill clip, I'm half expecting KZfaq to flag up a copyright infringement :-)

Hey Carl: nice sigs from the clansman 320, I see ur wearing a U of M shirt, I live about 46km from the main campus. And work at Ford EDC1& WHQ in Dearborn, Michigan and are 8km away from U of M Dearborn campus, going to use my clansman 320 at Dayton hamvention in a few weeks along with my ic7300 and hopefully a xiegu g90 that is supposed to be here next week. After that I'm using the g90 for CW at work, while on breaks. 73 de kg8hz

Hi Carl, at 2.15 minutes......I had a brainfart and thought......Can you just imagine this situation....you sitting by the side of the road talking into an old fashioned telephone handset.... and someone stopping and offering you their mobile phone....would of been priceless.... plus..... whats all this bandana stuff.... it shows you've been with the dx commander..... bandana.... bananas........its all kicking off on here.... what happened to the good ole days of seeing some stiff collared guy explaining radio and antenna's......

I like your enthusiasm for keeping the "green stuff" working and also enjoyed your passion for getting a younger element into the hobby, it certainly needs to be dragged into the 21st century! The antenna in minute 7 looks like the old military "current wave antenna" for the Polish (and Soviet) military R105 radio - good for reception in HF, transmitting is possible through the R105's built-in matching network (or 9:1 balun), works best above 30 MHz. The small shroud between the radiator and 3 counterpoises houses a 400 ohm resistor. The Chinese HF20A is a variation of this antenna. I have purchased one a while ago and used the wire to make EFHW as I wasn't happy with the transmitting performance.

The Racal has been sent back, not sure what the issue is yes, replacement on it's way to me. Thanks for the contact, the RF-10 is a cracking radio!!

Hi if you got the vrm 50 80 tank radio you need 24v 4 it to work properly

Thanks, I can get 2m contacts and a few HF contacts in low power however I'm enjoying getting 6m FM activity generated.

Carl I also have an RF10 radio, ...and other mil radios for 10, 4 & 6mtrs. PRC77, ER-95A, for 10m--6m, SEM52 on 6m, Clan PRC350, 351, 352. sadly though not much activity here around my QTH .....what homebrew aerial are you using on 6m?.......Ron G4FBC

I never got the hang of those longwire aerials in the RF10 kit either :-( well done for picking up inconsiderate louts rubbish too, very commendable & public spirited

It's based on a flowerpot antenna, simple but it works which I was quite chuffed at 😃

You will need to make sure it has the LSB modification done to operate on 40m and below, also an amateur radio licence if you haven't got one! :-)

Good stuff Carl, that looks like Easter weekend going by the weather. A man of good values too, offering to pick up the crap that other a****holes leave behind. That's something that frustrates the hell out of me too. It's just a shame that others dump knowing someone else will tidy up for them. It's the "It's all about me" culture striking again. His call was AM70R Carl ok and you can gauge the signal by how strong your hearing the station even though you have no visual meter............ with the AM stations everyones 59 though lol

Thanks for the comment. The tee-shirt was purely practical, bought from a thrift store in the UK. You can send whatever you feel like Scott, it's whether it'll survive the journey :-)

Hello Carl, For the antenna deployment and not only that... simply download the instruction manual of the radio here... m0rnw.uk/current-rigs/rf-10/ I follow your Channel and appreciate your efforts and passion to the Hobby. Bdw, i feel sorry that, to those that are not familiar with Ham Radio, you show more failures than succes... Only few contacts in hours of call, It is not normal even in this period of bad propagation... Use more the HF bands... In conjunction with more efficients antennas.... If you can also a bit of extra Power help.... You are a nice person Best 73, IU5ASA

Thank you, I purposely show that there's a challenge carrying equipment in a backpack for many kilometres and working low power or using bands rarely used with decommissioned military kit. I also show that there is a lot to learn while at the same time you don't need lots of contacts to enjoy the hobby. I could just use high power on HF and shoot fish in a barrel from my QTH but there's hardly any challenge in that :-)
