Operation Bluecoat was the British breakout in Normandy. Originally planned to coincide with operation Cobra, it was pushed back, to support the exploitation of Cobra.
The original objective was to take Mont Pinçon and Vire, the objectives weren't attained but they advanced 15 miles in 4 days.

New viewer to this channel in May 2024 - as D-Day approaches - I very much like this video which is clearly well researched. With sound effects photo inserts and simulated effects gives viewing a punch. Congratulations on this epic video. I ‘d love to view more.

Agreed. What I like about this presentation is that it zooms in to detailed tactical details including individual contacts (names of units, officers, NCO, Toms) and even civilian participation, then zooms out for the strategic overview. I’m ex-Royal Hampshire. The Hampshires comprised a good part of 43rd Wessex.

In 2014 I made two trips to Normandy from Paris. The first by motorbike, was via the excellent museum at Mt Ormel, then the road of death, before turning north to Falaise , ending up camping at Arromanches. The following day I discovered Crepon , the memorial to the Green Howards and Stanley Hollis. In pouring rain , the cyclist who guided me there, turned out to be the Mayor. I mentioned that my Dad was in the 50th Div in 1940, ( 4 years later he was at Anzio ) and when i returned to Paris I found an email invitation to a service of remembrance the following week. This time , by car, I followed essentially the same route but when I reached the Falaise road, I headed for Villers Bocage, before turning for Bayeaux. I was gobsmacked at how difficult this route must have been to fight through. The part played by the Canadian and British troops during this part of the campaign is underestimated I think. I was very impressed by the respect of the local people who attended the service at Crepon.

There’s a great wee military museum in St.martin de bessace .It details the main conflict around that area and the discovery of “bull bridge” which significantly helped in the breakout south and east through Normandy.Well worth a visit if your in the area.
