The name Bobby Fischer, at least to Americans, is synonymous with chess. A prodigy in the 50s, a world class player in the 60s, the 70s saw Fischer at his pinnacle. He earned the right to challenge Boris Spassky in a title run without comparison, defeating Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen with perfect scores of 6-0, and ex-champion Petrosian 6½-2½. Now the stage was set, and the only thing standing between Fischer and Spassky was Fischer himself.
The match was mired in political overtones, during the height of the Cold War. The Soviet chess system had a monopoly on the title since 1948, and the expectations on Spassky were enormous. While Fischer studied chess virtually in seclusion, Spassky had the full resources of the USSR. Victor Baturinsky, head of Soviet Chess Sports Committee, said: "Basically, the Soviet leadership and the powers that be in sport, were interested in just one issue: how to stop Fischer from becoming World Champion.
With the match set to begin in Reykjavik, Iceland, Fischer (who had not signed any documents confirming his participation) began to make a number of demands, including a percentage of television rights, a larger prize fund, and all manner of conditions covering everything from the lighting to the chair cushions. To satisfy Bobby's demands of a larger prize fund, British chess promoter James Slater donated a dazzling $125,000 to be added to the prize fund. Fischer still needed more convincing by Bill Lombardy (Fischer's last-minute choice as second), and one famously persuasive telephone call from Henry Kissinger. Mere hours before he would be forfeited, Fischer arrived in Iceland.

Being 16 when this matched occurred I didn't notice so much the huge day to day theatrics going on, a match outside the match. Your stories really bring back memories of that, US & Russia fighting another Cold War in Iceland. Today it might be believable theres a secret "ray gun" in Fischers chair, but in '72 it was propaganda & harassment mind games aimed at Fischer. Keep them coming, great stuff.

If we swap opponents, let's say Magnus Carlsen (Or even any other US players like Caruana) in his current age goes back in time to replace Spassky, then Fischer will go ballistic and accuse his opponent for sure. Yeap, the match has a whole lot of finger pointing.

On MGS3 online I was called a cheater a few times. My brother and I shared the account and to this day most people don't believe we were ranked #1, and in the MGS4 I told people who I was because I had a new handle, and no one believed me. ^ This comment is exactly right, if you lose, you're a noob, if you win, you're a cheater or lag/luck.

Bobby Fischer was not psychotic or paranoid but understandably fearful...on adjourned games, he had to compete against Team Russia who analyzed these games all night...so it was, in essence, Bobby Fischer against the world. Would that make any man angry and ill tempered...of course it would. This was far from being a level playing field but Fischer prevailed like the great champion that he was.

This is the number 4 most accurate Chess game in World Chess Championships history as of 30 November 2021. Sunday, 28 November, Nepomniachtchi vs Magnus (game 3 of WCC 2021) tops the list with lowest ACPL. Accumulated centipawn loss. As the most Accurate Chess game so far in WCC history. Of course as evaluated by what are considered to be the most accurate Chess engines we have to date, on what I assume is cloud or cluster hardware. As I seen in a twitter post by Lichess, today.

Sometimes I have had to play through a grueling 70+ move game to finally win. Small, incremental adjustments to set up conditions for the win. Shorter games seem, most often, to exploit a poor move by the other player. Of course, there are those occasions when I am the player who makes the poor move!

It really was sad, but that's what happens when you have such a polarized mindset. The Soviets had been undisputed chess champions for years, and some filthy westerner comes and makes one of their best look like a child. Fredrick Edges wrote about a match between Paul Morphy and Frederick Perrin, saying Perrin "presented about the same resistance as a mosquito to an avalanche." I'd say a similar thing applied to Fischer vs Taimanov.

I thought Taimanov got terribly crushed by Fischer before watching this series...but having watched the games it is not like Fischer crushed him like a mosquito, it is just that Taimanov was a bit unlucky in many games and lacked stamina to fight longer.... I believe Fischer would have won anyways but 6-0 does not by any means reflect how the games went... Taimanov played amazingly in many games but it just wasn't his match.

I think that sofa (and the smiley cushion) should be checked for hidden sonic screwdrivers - Medo the chess dog does behave very oddly sometimes.

first to get 12 points win? shouldn't it be 12 and a half? Because if you win 12 games your oponent can still win the other 12 and tie with you.

I don't know why it's so hard for people to read between the lines (or just the lines) of what Agadmator is saying in regards to the excuses the Soviets keep making. They are covering their asses to prevent from getting on the bad side of the Central Communist Party that was funding them. Nobody is trying to take away Fischer's credit as a slight to him, they're doing so to save their livelihoods. Even Fischer knew that. You can also tell that the Cold War has been over for too long because Agadmator's gulag "joke but not a joke" went completely over most people's head. The 'not a joke' part comes from what happened to Mark Taimanov after losing to Fischer 6-0 in 1971 as covered by our host here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jaqXZ7lqyq-cmZc.html .
