Operation Mincemeat was a successful British deception operation of the Second World War to disguise the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily. Two members of British intelligence obtained the body of Glyndwr Michael, a tramp who died from eating rat poison, dressed him as an officer of the Royal Marines and placed personal items on him identifying him as the fictitious Captain (Acting Major) William Martin. Correspondence between two British generals that suggested that the Allies planned to invade Greece and Sardinia, with Sicily as merely the target of a feint, was also placed on the body. Forensic examination showed these documents had been read and Ultra decrypts of German messages showed that the Germans fell for the ruse. German reinforcements were shifted to Greece and Sardinia before and during the invasion of Sicily; Sicily received none. The full effect of Operation Mincemeat is not known, but Sicily was liberated more quickly than anticipated and losses were lower than predicted.

Interesting fact about Operation Mincemeat: in a 1956 film made about it, The Man Who Never Was, Montagu did not play himself but instead plays the role of an Admiral who initially rejects the idea of Mincemeat from the actor playing Montagu and berates him for the idea.

Im at about the 1 hour mark. Idk if it gets mentioned later, but they also went out of their way to make the Spanish hesitant to perform an autopsy by using his pocket litter to imply he was a Roman Catholic, a religion shared by most of Spain at that time that specifically banned autopsies as a form of corpse mutilation. So it wasn't just a nat 20 on a charisma check, they already didn't want to do the autopsy anyway.

They were so pressed down to the line that they literally decided to Chuck everything including the kitchen sink trying to see what would work essentially taking what he called the path of Wallace and grommet. No matter how Absurd or insane the idea was they were more than willing to give ita go. Also it was a wonderful act of kindness on all sides That the man was buried with the full military honors of a major within the British military and was given All of The proper rites.

Fun fact, Goebbels didn't leave his opinion that Mincemeat was a load of shit in his diaries alone. In fact he voiced his concerns to Hitler and told him that everything sounded way too fishy and convinient. And Hitler just told him "shut up nerd" and ignored his concerns. So this was even bigger of an L for the Third Reich that you'd think

Oh, Wales! My time to shine! Glyndwr is the name of a old hero who wanted the Welsh to be free from the English, since the world was ending in 1400. Allegedly. More importantly, your pronunciation is rather close! Glyn is spot on! dwr, or water in Welsh, is a bit off. the W sound in welsh is like the oooh noise someone would say when in awe of something. As for the town name, Aberbargoed, it's also sorta close. I'll split is up. Aber, meaning the spot where the river meets the sea. Pronounced correctly. Bar, which... shares the English word, so don't worry! and coed, which means trees. Think of it like... the OI sound when a copper says "OI,OI,OI". A-ber-bar- g-OI-d. Hope this helps! Dear god I hope that I don't come off as pretentious. I just love my language a bit much, sorry.

~15:00 In a similar vein, Paul Linebarger wrote the literal textbook on Psychological Warfare (still used to this day). He was also charged with making job requirements for a Korean War psy-ops expert, which he wrote to match his resume. He is better known by his pen name Cordwainer Smith. Most of his stories involve psychic bureaucrats and love/religion overcoming unthinking bigotry. He's had a subtle cultural influence, for example coining the term "Human Instrumentality" and being referenced in Serial Experiments Lain, Log Horizon, and Outlaw Star.

Corpse law tends to differ depending on where you live, but generally a corpse is considered physical property of the next of kin rather than a person. Which is also why necrophilia is so hard to prosecute; it’s technically legal in most places, and most people are tried for things like destruction of property, disturbing a gravesite etc etc instead. So if the person consented in life or has no next of kin I believe the body becomes property of the state? Corpse law is wild

Something rarely known that Operation Mincemeat helped: in 1944, the British did the same thing, this time putting the real D-Day landing plans on the body, knowing full well that the German reaction would be “I’m not falling for this shit again”, thus helping Operation Fortitude.

My Grandad on my Dads side was in the Big Red 1. He enlisted after Pearl Harbor as a Sergent and his first tour was in the North African campaign. He took part in the invasion of Sicily, and by the time D-Day came around he'd gotten a commission. By the time of the Battle of the Bulge he'd made Captain where he earned his highest accolades and ended up back state side selling war bonds and recruiting for the rest of his contract.

For anyone curious, there was a fantastic movie on Operation Mincemeat that came out last year! Literally called Operation Mincemeat. Goes more into detail on just how much effort they put into making this believable. Would reccomended
