As a former housekeeper, I don’t even blame you. I used to have to clean 20+ rooms with a time limit of 17 minutes per room - that was for stripping/changing bed linen, washing & drying dishes, disinfecting, cleaning the bathroom and mopping/vacuuming + anything else. We were told to mop with cold water only and got in trouble if we took too long 🫠 The comforters were also NEVER changed…only the bedsheets were. It did my head in because I’m a clean freak

I’m in healthcare and so many times I take too long with a patient but my conscience demands that I make sure my patient understands or is comfortable. I’m sure you couldn’t do much about the comforter but I’m sure there was a lot that you did the other housekeepers brushed over because you knew what was right. Myself, I’m a fan of the floor steamer. It doesn’t take much time to heat up.

And then they touch the light switches, remotes and door knobs with those hands. 🤢 I was rushed to clean and make it look like it was cleaned when it’s really just wiped to appear clean. @Natasha___.4 ай бұрын
We weren’t even allowed to use actual bleach because of some health and safety bs where it can cause toxic chlorine gas if it’s mixed with other products etc. it used to tear me up to use the basic antibacterial liquid they gave us, because I know for a fact that bleach works no matter how cheap it is and I don’t trust the cheap antibacterial solution corporate has okayed because they’re only looking for profits. Just an FYI for everyone about bed bugs- these sprays WILL NOT KILL BED BUGS. Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of and they are very hard to kill. They usually won’t even be out and about because they hide until a warm body is nearby. The best thing you can do in a hotel situation like this is prevention. Here’s how: when first arriving put luggage in the bathtub or keep it outside the room while you or someone else takes a flashlight and looks in crevice areas like the seams of the mattress itself, the seams of upholstered furniture like chairs and sofas, perhaps behind picture frames. Look for little brownish red spots on the upholstery and the presence of the bugs themselves hiding in the seams. If you find evidence of bed bugs DO NOT try and use these little sprays. Take your baggage. Tell the reception right away there are bedbugs and they will usually give you a full refund. Best bet would be to find another hotel ideally, because the way bed bugs are there is a good possibility that other rooms will be affected- not just one. Another way to find bedbugs is after putting luggage in the bath tub or outside, take a water bottle and put it in the microwave to make it hot, then put the bottle on the bed for 15-20 minutes. This simulates a warm body and this may attract the bedbugs to come out to the bottle. If that happens, again- go get a refund and leave. While bed bugs are not life threatening generally and do not typically transmit disease, they can infiltrate your home if carried back and be expensive to get rid of. Lots of misinformation about bed bugs so skip the bed bug sprays and just do a visual check and the hot water bottle test. Edit: fact checked and they get attracted to CO2 from our breath not body heat. The water bottle trick may not be effective. Extreme temperatures is one of the most reliable ways of killing them. I believe it’s >125 F stable heat that will kill all stages of bed bug including their more heat resistant eggs. So bringing your travel clothes home and putting them in wash cycle hot water and then hottest setting on dryer should reduce risk. If you have a freezer that gets 0F or below, you can put clothes and items in there for 3 weeks and it will kill adults then eggs that hatch later. There’s also bed bug ovens for sale. Vacuuming and putting vacuum bag in a sealed bag and disposing of it is also helpful. But most importantly PLEASE call an expert like a pest control company if you suspect a bedbug infestation. Check out r/bedbugs on Reddit for more info.
@thatsanriosoftboy4 ай бұрын
Yeah that was my immediate thought, because my parents apartment had bedbugs (their fault, my entire family has god awful cleaning standards) and it took months to get rid of them, also you can report to the hotel or cruise and they will give you a new room, but you probably won’t be any better off because if there’s one infestation it’s probably affecting most if not all of the building
@countrygirl74024 ай бұрын
You're 100% correct. If she wants a better protection on the bed she needs sheets that completely cover the mattress and zip closed. That still won't cover the carpet or chairs or cracks and crevices or anywhere else they hide. Basically your best bet, look at reviews. If the reviews say bedbugs were spotted, avoid the hotel. Because like you said it only takes 1. And they are monsters to get rid of. My mother got them from a hotel stay. We finally got rid of them thanks to a military contact that got us what they use. It worked.

People are nasty. That's why some members of my family don't eat at homes where people have dogs. The rationale is: if humans are nasty and they naturally shed hair and skin cells & we are potty trained, imagine adding a pets who have no clue about hair shedding and pee/poop on whatever is absorbent. If humans aren't clean and don't practice hygiene etiquette religiously, why would a pet? And having a pet means more work/more cleaning, more resources, more everything. Somewhere the owner is cutting corners....and it usually in the cleanliness department. But that's my family's rationale on the matter. 🤷♀️

My husband is a maintenance manager/supervisor at a huge apartment complex, he says that spray doesn't kill or prevent them. Honestly, the only thing that works these days is diatomaceous earth. It's super finely ground up shells, which sticks to the bed bugs and dries them out. They have grown immune to almost all of the sprays. Another thing that works is alcohol. But, the thing is, it has to be sprayed directly on them. Just a little FYI. 😊
@LeeLonerRipOwl4 ай бұрын
This comment should be higher. I came here to say exactly this, as someone who had an infestation of bedbugs (who hitched a ride from a friend's apt) and successfully eradicated them. It took a combination of caulking all cracks in my bedroom, diatomaceous earth, and sealing the mattress and box spring in plastic. Bedbugs are no joke. They're a hellish nightmare.

Horrible thing for the environment. We are hating on so many single-use products like make-up wipes, cotton pads, etc. but ok with big disposable sheets that likely have very cheap synthetic / plastic yarn in them that will never decompose. I was a housekeeper at a major hotel. I definitely support this message. I also clean my room, and especially get a new comforter from the office. Those are not washed often.
@t-and-p4 ай бұрын
This makes me feel so much better about bringing our own! The first thing I do in a hotel is remove the comforter from the bed and either pop it in a cupboard we won't be using (I replace it at the end of the stay, so it doesn't look like it's gone missing!) or let reception know we won't be needing it. Would it be OK to ask your opinion on something? Whenever we stay anywhere, I always see how hard the housekeepers work and want to help out. I'm often not there when housekeeping come round, so if I need towels changing, I leave a polite note in a prominent place in the room letting them know that's all we need, and have the dirty towels folded next to it (so they know which ones and they're easy to grab). They normally swap them for me. I also strip the bed before we leave, fold the bedding and sheets in two piles (so they know nothing nasty is in them), leave a note explaining that we've done it to try and save them some time and saying thank you. Next to it, I leave a little gift, as we don't live in a country where tipping is really a thing, and I'm never convinced that anything I leave at reception would make it to my housekeeper, anyway. The problem is, I obviously never see the housekeeper (as they come after we've checked out) to know if this is actually something that helps, or if I'm inadvertently causing them an inconvenience. Should I continue to do this? Hope it's ok to ask - thank you for your time 😊

@@maybemablemaples2144 Thank you for your kind reply! In that case, I'll keep doing it 😊 I just know in my own line of work that when people try to help, with the best of intentions, it's not always actually helpful - which is why I wanted to check. I really appreciate the feedback. Funnily enough, I normally leave a little note with some money saying "have a well-earned drink on us" and a little box of chocolates - so now I know I'm in the right ball-park, if that's the bit you enjoy 😎 Wishing you all the best 💕👍
@catwhisperer95244 ай бұрын
@@t-and-p what you do with the sheet and everything else is probably one of the greatest gifts you could give a housekeeper. I always loved it so much when guests would do this. The chain I worked at paid by the hour, with 8 hour shifts and were put back on probation if we cleaned less than 24 rooms in a shift, and that included the time gathering our carts, dropping loads, everything. So, when people do as you do in some hotels (not all) not only is it helping us, it's helping us have more time to actually CLEAN. So thank you so much from a former housekeeper! ❤ I know the others appreciate it too.
@t-and-p4 ай бұрын
@@catwhisperer9524 Thank you for taking the time to reply and for your advice - I appreciate it 👍 The amount of time they give housekeepers is insane to me. I think about how much time I take to clean at home and I wouldn't stand a chance completing everything in the time that management seem to think is "enough" in hotels. That's why I try and look around, see what needs doing, and try to find things that will buy the housekeeper a few minutes of extra time - even if that just gives them a chance to pop to the loo, or get something done that's been bugging them but they just haven't had time to address. I asked you on here because a nurse friend said she always worries when patients have stripped the bed (she worries what is in the sheets...) which got me second-guessing myself, as I was trying to be nice, not scare people! I hope that folding them and leaving a note puts them at ease, but I wanted to ask someone who knows what it's like to be on the receiving end of something like that before I do it again. I've recently been promoted at work (I work in emergency medicine, and now run the clinical side of my department). My new role seems to involve a lot more conferences, meaning a lot more hotel stays. So I want to get it right so that there are happier housekeepers, rather than ones who are wary of me! Thanks again! 😊💕

I used to be a housekeeper and I do the same. It's not a problem with the housekeepers. It's a problem with the amount of time we are given to clean. When you give someone 16 hours of work to be done in 8, things get skipped. And yes, it can get that bad. At one of the nursing homes I used to work at, we had 1 hall to do on weekdays which filled up our day. We had 2 halls to do on weekends. To top it off, most deep cleans needed to be done on weekends since that's when most people left the tcu. It was more than 16 hours of work in 8 hours at times.
