I had a bit of a cold during this one, sorry about that. Recorded live on a Zoom H6 and a U87Ai.
Big thanks to Toni for letting me play her Martin HD-28V, and letting Carson play her J-Bass (through his Zoom AC-2). She is playing Reina's Martin 00-15, and Reina is playing Carson's shaker. Sharing is caring.
Edited in Pro Tools and Premiere.

Every time I hear Croce I go back to the 7th grade the day he died. Funny how music can take you back to particular times in life. I was such a fan that I listened to this and a couple others of his other LPs over and over until I wore them out. We lost a true one of the greats that day. I never met him irl but I did in a dream recently! Not sure what brought it on but in the dream he knew me well like an old friend. He called me by my name and gave me a big bear hug like a long lost brother. I was so thrilled to see him and just asked "how you been "Big Jim"? Woke up with a smile on my face at a time I really needed one. What I wouldn't do for another dream like that one. Life is funny, but not always in a haha way. I can be cruel and it can beat you down even when you have done your best. Great job guys, thanks for taking me back and helping me escape for a moment

My father was my best friend, mentor, and my compass. He passed away last year i was not even 17 yet. He was obsessed with music and the feelings he could impose on himself and the things he could create. I never understood the world he lived in, nor did it appeal to me. Shortly after he died i picked up the martin guitar that we had hung up on the wall with his help. Its been about a year now. And my biggest regret was not finding this world in music sooner. Though i sometimes feel i was too late, music is still too often my road to him. Its as if im with him again when i pick up my guitar. All to often i find myself weeping late at night to his music on and old zune audio recorder. Though it hurts more than I could put into words. Just as music does, his voice connects me back to him and brings me some form of closure i will always cherish. Ive heard a hundred covers of operator. But none of them made me cry the way this did aside from his cover for obvious reasons. Thank you dearly for sharing this piece of beauty. When you inevitably blow up even more than you have. Ill still be in debt and forever more great full to you lot.

Yesterday, September 20th, 2021 was the 48th anniversary of Jim's death in a plan crash here in Louisiana. I was a music student at a small university here in Louisiana. I literally bumped into Jim coming out of the music department and at the time I didn't recognize him. Later that evening I was in the auditorium to hear Jim Croce. As he comes out on stage I realized who I had bumped into. The next night he was gone. There were three songs of his that have always stuck with me. This is the best one in my opinion. @@Riff5150 I dont think EatPezzzz comment was ego driven or belittling of the persons in this video. He simply stated that this song was based on a simple chord structure with the secondary guitar part consisting of strategic fills played over the top. He is absolutely right, there is nothing complex about it. It doesnt need to be complex because Jim is telling a personal story over the top of the instrumental parts. The commenter even complimented on the video performance. Why must he post a video to back his claim? It would be ridiculous for me to ask you to show me your guitar wizardry videos to support anything you have said, so I won't even go there. If the commenter was being a self absorbed dick, then sure give em hell. All he did was counter a claim that this songs guitar parts were extremely complex, there not. No harm, No foul. Jim Croce wrote this while doing basic training in the National Guard in 1966, far from home and his new bride Ingrid. While standing in the rain with other guardsmen, each waiting their 3-minute turn at the pay phone, some of whom had gotten Dear John letters or calls (their ladies breaking up with them), Jim was impacted by these stories and the humanity of the occasion. His songs were like that, simple yet profound glimpses of life. Thanks for keeping this one alive!

JusBidniss Had NO clue that was what the song was about!! Thank you so much for letting us in on that wonderful nugget of some of the best songs of my youth❤️ “Time In A Bottle” was sung at my wedding, and the young man did it so eloquently. The memories that a song can bring back. 😊 I remember my first call home in basic at Ft McClellan, Alabama to my Dad...told him I changed my mind and he just laughed and hung up the phone...it was 1970. 🤪 Since he was in WWII when he was 19 and a pilot on the Charles F Hughes destroyer for the NAVY...i can see his point. Well...it was a lonely pity party till i finally figured out the rules and that basic training is all a mind game... after that, was jiggy with it. 👍🏻😁🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸 Still hated the gas chamber....we all know where the call OORAH came from. The sound you make when yanking the mask off and puking your guts out. 🇺🇸

Dear Mary, your brother was an authentic genius paired with another one, Jim Croce, to produce perfection. It's funny that at 3:44 Toni Lindgren (the lady playing Maury's licks in this cover) does exactly what Maury used to do at the end of almost every live performance: shake the hair out of his right-eye view. A documentary on Maury Muehleisen, who was 6 years younger than Jim but already an accomplished songwriter and musician when they met, is greatly needed. What amazes me is how Maury (a pianist) improved his guitar skills so quickly and at that level in order to express Jim's melodies so nicely.

I only discovered some of your brother’s work recently - I was a small kid in 1973 - and introduced it to my son, who is 19 but loves music from that area: we both love Maury and Jim and how they write and composed such meaningful lyrics, melodies and layers of sound that expressed emotions in way that perfectly complimented the poetic message. I didn’t know your brother and don’t know you but their music makes me feel connected.

It's easier to find the good things looking back because it's what survives. If you haven't already, I highly recommend checking out Kendrick Lamar's "Damn." The song is about someone who hasn't come to terms that his best friend and the love of his life ran off together. It's been long enough that "the number on the match book is old and faded", hence why he's calling the operator to get the number. He wants to call the woman mentioned in the song "to show I've overcome the blow and take it well. But I wish my words could convince my heart, but that's not the way it feels".
