Probably Deliverance. Saw them live a year ago today and it was such a banger. They didn't do too many of their heavier songs, but man can he growl with such ease it's crazy. Deliverance provided me with all the head bangerage one could want.

The pain I see in others is one of my favorites.

Much of it comes down to your natural tone tbh. I've come close. After a year of trying to learn to control my growls i've realized it really is just his own voice that makes his growls sound so great. You need strong clean vocals to belt out growls like he does.

Why does everyone get this wrong He started with false chords. Because Mike himself has said his early technique was quiet. Listening to morningrise, you can actually hear it's really hollow and close to the mic. This went on until deliverance. In Ghost reveries he started to just belt out his growls. There is a significant change in volume and the tone is much fuller. There is an isolated vocals only of a few songs on Blackwater park. Studying leper affinity and listening, i quickly discovered he uses false chords but does them with an open mouth and low larynx. There is not much modulation going on. His mouth movement is pretty natural. And the behind the making of Deliverance confirms this. They're really low in volume and he practically whisper screams. On ghost reveries and watershed however, they're more akin to traditional death metal growls. And in RAH he simply had lost his voice, and they're not fucking false chords lol, they're just all he has left from his fry screams. I do both myself and the tone matches.

@@williamreynolds3487 uhm, Mikael himself has stated his screams on Orchid were quiet and low on volume, suggesting they were false chord screams. what backs this up is video footage of him doing vocals pre 2002. from there on he changed his technique, leading to his actual voice coming through alot more.

@@Celatra the fact that they were quiet proves even further that they were fry screams. Fry is simply quieter than false cord (99% of the time; I won’t use absolutes). If you’ve ever compared the two, either hearing someone else or doing it yourself, you’d hear that. The fact that his screams were really tight, but somewhat breathy is a clear indicator of fry. Just listen to the Lamentations show or The Drapery Falls pro shot footage from 2001 and you’ll hear it. As for the first two albums, we won’t ever know for sure, but I’d assume he was still perfecting his vocals and didn’t have full cord closure or great technique (if you wanna hear an extreme example of this, listen to Katatonia’s first album; that dude had as close to no technique as you could). Nonetheless, he was still clearly doing fry screams on those first two albums. Nowadays, and even after Deliverance, you can hear that Cookie Monster-type scream that is associated with false cord, not fry in the slightest; I’ve never heard anyone’s fry sound like that. Tbf, though, we’ll never know for sure and everyone can have an opinion, of course. However, considering multiple people who know what they’re talking about have stated that the screams are fry, and I do fry screams and sound very similar to his vocals (which is not the case when I try to replicate known false cord vocalists with my fry screams), I’d say it’s a pretty solid assumption they are fry screams. Not to mention the volume, like you had said and the tightness of the vocals that you usually see with fry, but not much with false cord. Anyway, that was fun to type up! Have a good day! Edit: I also never said they were false cord at the RAH; I said from Ghost Reveries to the RAH he was starting to go toward false cord, which was indicated by the breathy-ness, but lack of cord closure.

@@AbsoRuud76 you shouldn't. We have a confirmation from Mikael he started with false chords. He has in interviews said his first screams were low on volume but didnt require much effort. I want you to go to listen to morningrise and really pay attention to just how hollow his vocals are. It is very clear he does it with false chords but with an open mouth and is really close to the mic. Want more proof? listen to the isolated vocal tracks of the leper affinity. Want even more proof? Look at when he records vocals in the making of Deliverance & damnation videos. He stands VERY close to the mic. Pay attention to his mouth movements too. They're very natural unlike what is demonstrated by this guy. Now compare that to this performance Further from the mic, you hear more of mike's actual voice behind the growls, it sounds fuller, his highs have volume to them and he has a harder time holding notes out. He fucking belts those growls out. The neck tension confirms this. Plus there is a clear undertone to his vocals and it happens to be a D and a F#. I've done experiments myself and they match perfectly. He growls with his own voice without any crazy modulations. It's why it's so distinct. It's just his voice.

@@AbsoRuud76 it's in the "how Mikael Akerfeldt learned to scream" video by loudwire where he mentions it im pretty sure. Just look at many interviews around this topic. And also look at live videos from over the years The reason he changed technique in RAH was because he got in ear monitors and thought his growls sounded weird so he changed them. His growls are so powerful because he has a quite low and powerful voice. Your voice plays actually a big role on how your harsh vocals sound like.

His growling went that way not because the wrong technique he used in 1995-2000 but mosly because of drinking, smoking and losing interest in extreme vocals. Anyway it seems like Mikael has really improved his growls by the end of 2019 year and he takes lesson with a vocal coach now

No, it came down to overuse, drinking and smoking. And age. Almost no one in their 50's can growl like in their prime due to change in their physique.
