In a recent, exclusive track-by-track feature with Metal Hammer, vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt gave some insight behind the creation of the song: “It’s a song inspired by “Dun Ringil”l by Jethro Tull (from the album Stormwatch, 1979). I wanted to do a song with my capo really high, so it’s up on the fifth fret. It makes the guitar sound really glittery. I just wanted to go for a simple, catchy vocal melody. It has a slightly positive vibe to it, but the lyrics are really, really dark. It’s a beautiful song, I think. I’m really happy with that one.”

2016 marks the monumental return of one of heavy rock’s most unique, revered and fearless bands of the last three decades, Opeth. Over the years, the experimental, prog veterans have continuously reinvented themselves, pushing the boundaries of their craft and expectations of fans and critics alike.
OPETH’s new album, Sorceress, their first for Nuclear Blast via the band’s imprint label Moderbolaget Records, is proof chief architect Mikael Åkerfeldt has a near-endless well of greatness inside. From the album’s opener 'Persephone' to 'The Wilde Flowers' and 'Strange Brew' to the album’s counterpart title tracks 'Sorceress' and 'Sorceress II', OPETH’s twelfth full-length is an unparalleled adventure, where visions cleverly and secretly change, colors mute as if weathered by time, and sounds challenge profoundly.
Sorceress Track List:
1. Persephone
2. Sorceress
3. The Wilde Flowers
4. Will O The Wisp
5. Chrysalis
6. Sorceress 2
7. The Seventh Sojourn
8. Strange Brew
9. A Fleeting Glance
10. Era
11. Persephone (Slight Return)
”The new album "Sorceress" is our 12th studio album since our beginnings in 1990,” says Åkerfeldt. “I find it difficult to understand that we’ve been going on for 26 years, let alone that we’ve made 12 records now, all of which I am very proud of. ”Sorceress” is no exception. I love this album, as does the whole band. I wrote the music during 5-6 months and we spent only 12 days recording it at Rockfield studios in Wales. I find that once again we’ve taken a step forward. Or sideways, Or backwards. Somewhere!? It’s different! It’s extremely diverse. And if I may say so myself, extremely good. I feel the right to say that since I like to think I know this band better than anyone on the planet. Also, I always manage to detach myself from the record and listen as a fan. It’s a fine little record. My favorite in our discography right now. Of course. That’s how it should be, right? It’s both fresh and old, both progressive and rehashed. Heavy and calm. Just the way we like it. Hopefully there’ll be others around the globe sharing this opinion. It was a joy to make it. A fucking joy to record it, and a sheer joy listening to it. So there you have it!”
For Sorceress, OPETH returned to Rockfield Studios in Wales, also home to pivotal releases from Queen, Rush and Judas Priest, where the Swedes had tracked Pale Communion in 2014 with Tom Dalgety. The band spent 12 days recording at the countryside venue among its serene and inspiring surroundings. The result is nothing short of a powerful and intriguing record that will add yet another layer to the band’s celebrated career.

The uniqueness of Opeth is that when I want to rock out to metal I can listen to them. And when I'm in the mood to chill and listen to mellow stuff, I can also listen to them. Opeth is a phenomenal band, Mikael is a genius. That they are this far into thier career and continue to produce true gems, memorable gems, gems you wanna keep playing on repeat, is a testament to how special this band is. Some may not agree, but my ears are satisfied more often than not, and this coming from a person who's preference is metal, through and through.

I cannot tell you, Opeth, how much I love the passion you put in your work. This (hopefully) endless journey you began in 1995 has been the most varied, beautiful, and inspiring I've ever undertaken. With your unique approach of creating music that is original and true to yourselves, not getting imprisoned in a single genre or style to not "betray" (a word so easily thrown out these days) part of your fans/producers and eventually inevitably lose your inspiration along the years, like so many bands before you did, you manage to dish out masterpiece after masterpiece. To this day I can't say I've found a single track of yours to be uninspired, boring, or a track to just make some money. In a 21-year career in such a creative and demanding art like music, that's extraordinarily INCREDIBLE. 21 years later and I'm still here, not knowing what to expect from the next album, excited about what change you brought in this time, instead of the usual fearful expectation I have with other bands, scared of "maybe this is the album where they sell out and lose their magic". I don't know how you do it, but please, PLEASE, keep on doing it \m/

This song reminds me of the movie I saw with Linda Manz - "Days of Heaven" It's like when you're young you can live care-free in days of splendor with someone you love. But then you suddenly find yourself longing those days, so long ago. And they are gone forever and you wish you could go back to at least say goodbye.

Okay this is PHENOMENAL. There was so much Jethro Tull in that I loved it! There's been a cheesiness, or experimental nature, in this new phase that I couldn't put my finger on, but it sounds like it's finally gone. This is really mature songwriting, Mikael is cemented as a fucking musical genius! The production, pulling back on the keys and using them more effectively, Axe's drums... it works beautifully. And that bluesy Strat tone in the solo, holy shit man! This is gonna be one hell of a record!

I appreciate Opeth being real about what depression really does, whether that was their original point or not. Often people write hopeful, cheery music full of unrealistic stereotypes to try and encourage us. That's not true, depression kills it's initial victim slowly and then it moves along to the people in this person's life infecting them as well. These lyrics remind me of what will happen if I don't fight this shit every day and take care of myself mentally and physically.

THIS is what I thought Heritage was going to sound like when I first heard about how that album was going to be. I always wanted more songs like harvest or the acoustic passages from heavy songs, Damnation was amazing but it wasn't that, and this song is like a mix of Damnation & those classic Opeth acoustic bits. If Heritage (& pale communion to a lesser extent) were songs like this one, I would've loved those albums and I don't think fans would've been as dissapointed.

I first found Opeth upon the release of Still Life. That album and this band reinvigorated my love of Heavy Metal, which at that point had become a little stagnant. Don’t misunderstand, I still liked my HM, I’ve never stopped listening to it, but there wasn’t anything around that blew me away. Still Life was what I was looking for. But what I couldn’t understand was why I hadn’t heard of Opeth before. Perhaps because at the time I had young kids, I don’t know. Anyway, I’m drifting from my original point. Opeth became my new favourite Heavy Metal band and that feeling remains to this day; despite the band taking a slightly different direction, I still love them implicitly. They’ve matured and become masters of their art. This track, Will O The Wisp, is just magical to me. The arrangements, the vocal and lyrics - perfection. Thank you Mikael. Your band and music mean the world to me.

I'm personally really torn about Opeth nowadays. I really miss the old sound, the songs Mikael used to write were way more complex, cohesive and awe-inspiring (also very enriched by Steven Wilson's lush production), but on the other hand, I respect the band for doing exactly what they want, and not pampering their desperately elitist fanbase. I want them to keep their integrity, but at the same time I'm saddened that they'll never make an album like Damnation or Ghost Reveries again.

Mikael produced the album, Steven only mixed it. But yeah, Pale Communion is by no means a simple album and neither will Sorceress. A lot of people forget how hard it is to write a song people will really listen to, let alone one written for acoustic guitar. Opeth are trend setters plain and simple.

Francisco Montoya Now that would be very cool... perhaps he's working his way up to a solo release, similar to how it took Steven Wilson 23 years to gather up the courage to put his own name on an album for a change. Knowing Mikael, it'll probably be nothing any of us would expect!
