I’m an ophthalmic technician and I get paid (starting out) in Texas, $15 an hour. I went to school for medical assisting, but nothing ophthalmology related. So, I had no training for this until I started on the job. I love it, though.

I live in upstate NY, I've been working at a fairly large clinic with about 12 provider for the past 10 years. I make 32 an hour at the moment. I started out at 13 an hour though. From what I have heard over the years, most good techs generally hover around the 20 to 30 range after you have been around a while. It does seem to vary alot from state to state from the looks of it.

My wife is an Ophthalmic Technician with a COA. She gets paid so little compared to the work and level of knowledge involved. Comparatively I sit on my but all day and I get paid about 60% more than she does. Should be reversed, in my opinion.
