I like what Nolan is doing in his recent movies. He built a fail-safe reputation for himself and is demanding his viewers to become more intelligent if they want to watch his movies. The audacity of the man to dictate people to watch his creation in its innate form rather than compromising his vision to accommodate commercial elements is truly incredible!! Glad to see the wheels turning !!

Agree and that's the reason why a filmmaker like him can find any stories out there be it real life people or science fiction or comic book to adapt into a film. Another great example is Scorsese and these directors are proof that one doesn't need to make movies depending on latest trend or dumb it down for audience.

I just love the fact that his movies demand an unfaltering attention from the audience. Someone with a short attention span must never ever watch his movies because Nolan's attention to detail is just beyond this world. Its like Nolan has just forever changed both our perception and our intelligence levels to appreciate his cinema. Along with his form of cinema making the audience too has evolved along the way.

Similar uncompromising nature can be found in A24 productions movies too.. looking forward to the day their movies are equally celebrated. Am not comparing the scale or opulence of Nolan and A24's work but rather their belief in their craft and uncompromising nature.

Oppenheimer is Nolan's most Different and Detailed Project till date. Its a character study and courtroom drama more than anything else. Definitely not for everyone, But if you like dialogue heavy and documentary style films, This could be one of the best cinematic experiences you can have. One of the best sound design i've heard in a while. Cilian, RDJ and Emily knocked it out of the park. The tension during the trinity test will be something i won't be forgetting for a long time. In Summary, I was delighted i read American Prometheus before watching the film and would suggest the same to anyone who has the time and interest. Believe it or not, Nolan doesn't miss.

@@Karne282 I think the Book was close to 800 pages so it dealt with every thought and conflict in Oppie's mind. After the Trinity Test, He was always shown to be conflicted and voiced his opinions that led him to huge trouble. In the movie also i feel they gave sufficient time to Oppie's conflict. Entire interrogation scene, advisory committee meeting, talk with einstein were reminiscent of that. I dont think they could've given anymore importance to his internal conflict in a 3 hour film.

This movie was literally so beautiful but also haunting. It isn't technically heavy like other Nolan films, but it's very emotionally heavy. There's this ominous, intense feel throughout, but then, fitting for the subject. I really liked the scene of Oppenheimer being questioned about his morality in court, where they repeatedly increase the number of casualties from the atomic bombings. I don't know if people are afraid to give negative reviews about this movie, as they may be labelled unintellectual, but the movie left me unsatisfied. I didn't find it boring but I also didn't expect 70-80% of the movie to be about the interrogation and Oppenheimer defending the accusations against him! Also, I expected to see the bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the attack on Pearl Harbor. I know it's a biography, but 5-7 minutes of those scenes would have been enough (especially when they marketed it to be cinematic spectacle shot on in IMAX 70mm) Also, I expected some more context on what was happening in Japan. Overall a good movie, but certainly not the best Nolan movie in my opinion. I just watched the movie!! And I agree with most of the comments here - this movie is not everyone's piece of cake (some guy was watching a video in my theatre - i was able to hear it distinctly 😑) I was not able to connect with the film for like 30-45 mins (and I think a lot of people didn't) because I wasn't familiar with all the characters involved and the later life of Oppenheimer or the events that took place. Lets be honest it's their history not ours so if we are not familiar with it we will not get it. Also the movie is fast paced. But as the movie progresses you just flow in it - as in you get the gist of what's going on and who's against who and what not. My theatre did not show subs for some reason so some of the dialogues went over the head 😅 as there are characters with different accents. But during all the chaos you feel what Oppenheimer must have felt. Murphy has brilliantly portrayed this and the background score perfectly compliments his performance. I want to rewatch it but so not in the local theatre. I get why big screens are necessary for such movies. If anyone reads my comment (which i doubt - it went too long) - I urge you to first understand the genre and then comment anything about it. Because as I said before - it's not everyone's piece of cake.

Fantastic character study of a brilliant mind with performances to behold. Murphy, Downing, Damon, Blunt. This is probably Nolan's easy to understand film 8:36 s after Dunkirk if you know how complex his films can be. A masterpiece must say.

Saw it yesterday (in the US) in an almost fully packed IMAX theater. Here's what I figured - if you know the story of Oppenheimer (like I do), then you'll be heavily invested for the whole 3 hours. You know the characters, their background, their future, their overall involvement and contribution to the story. But if you don't know the story beforehand (like my wife), you lose interest rather quickly. I noticed my wife lose interest within the first hour because it's hard following 3 different events (life story of the main character as a whole, his own hearing, and RDJ's character hearing), especially if you're not used to Nolan's work (it was her first Nolan movie experience). That is where the "this movie is boring" critics are coming from, they don't know the story beforehand. I can assure you a majority of people in India who have gone, or are going, to see the movie too don't know the story of Oppenheimer beforehand, they just don't want to miss out on the Nolan movie experience or miss out on the hype train. Let's be honest, the movie itself isn't really introducing you to the events that led to the creation of the atom bomb, it expects you to come in with a certain amount of knowledge into the movie theater. Now, getting all of that out of the way - I thought the movie was brilliant. As you said, every cast member played their part brilliantly, and the revelation at the end was executed brilliantly. I was hesitant going in, not looking forward to the 3 hour run time, but coming out of it I think every minute was worthwhile. Someone else could have got their hands on this and stretched it into a 10 episode mini series (and shown on HBO or Netflix), stretching out events during the creation of the bomb, exploring Oppenheimer's personal life more, maybe dedicated an entire episode to how he changed his mind about the bomb AFTER it was used, and it would have been brilliant, but 3 hours did wonderfully as well (although I would have liked a deeper dive on the last point - how he worked on the bomb knowing it's destructive powers, after then working against the US making more, and bigger, bombs after WWII, but there are literary works out there that do that). All in all, if you haven't seen this movie yet and don't know anything about the man himself, I highly recommend you take an hour out before watching the movie and watch a couple of videos here on KZfaq that talk a little bit about who he was, what he did, and what was done to him after. Nothing too long, you can get the basic idea in 10~15 min videos. That will give you a general idea of what is happening in the movie once you sit down. Put it this way - you wouldn't get a whole lot out of a movie based on the life of APJ Abdul Kalam if you didn't know anything about beforehand, or a biopic on Mahatma Gandhi if you hadn't learnt about him in school. You'll be doing yourself a huge favor.

lol the only ones who say the film was boring is because they are used to watching bwood or tollywood movies who end in 2 hours and are filled with constant meaningless action and nonsensical dialouges. the film was a bit slow in 1st half but was never boring.... i might have read this before but i didnt even remember that heisenberg was german and was working on atom bomb of his own...or that neils bohr was smuggled to usa...and frankly old alber einsteins words made me think that he wasted last 30 years of his life in a drunken stupor not because he couldnt unify the universal field theory but because he knew that if he completed that something worse than atom bomb might happen...just my imagination obviously but given how scientists are treated in our world i dnt think m very far

Oppenheimer is pure cinema! The silence inside the film in some places feels so loud. The second half itself is a film. Great. Eyes of Cillian, Anger of Matt, Nature of Blunt and heavenly acting by RDJ and other stellar cast were awesome. If Nolan, Cillian and Rdj do not win Oscar for this I don't know then why Oscars are conducted. And truly now Nolan has become cinema himself. In future when the history of cinema will be written Nolan will be ignited in bold letters with his films. Hats off to the film crew and the music director. Loved this film. It deserves 4.8/5.0 stars.

- In my top 5 Nolan film. Cillian Murphy took the lion's share of acting. And he freaking killed it. RDJ has given his career best performance for me. Even emily blunt in the last five minutes. - The explosion was hauntingly beautiful. The entire trinity test scene had me at the edge of my seat. - Honestly I found the sound design the best of all Nolan films. You could hear the sound grains in the desert against the crackling sound of the neutron bombardment during the explosion. - The Politics and Communism represented in the movie was so intriguing to me. - I had no doubts about the Cinematography. Similar vibes to Dunkirk. - The portrayal of the complicated relationship of Robert and Kitty was one of the standouts for me. - Lastly the soundtrack. Ludwig Elevated the scenes with his magic. "Destroyer of Worlds" which plays in the last scene is on the loop on my phone. Watched in IMAX. Anything less than IMAX will not justify it.

I was expecting some never-seen-before atomic explosion but was heavily disappointed. Please don't go to cinema expecting cinematical masterpiece like Interstellar or Dunkirk or Tenent or DK. It's a master class of screenplay and expulsion of acting and everyone seems to be in the race of it. This movie begs your 100% attention (all of Nolan movie does) and need to have some history and science knowledge. Everyone is praising Cillian for carrying the entire movie on his shoulder but I bet my left testicle that RDJ will be nominated and inshaallah may win Oscar for Support actor. Goddamn that actor was so lost in Marvel movies. Good to see him perform like he did in Chaplin and Judge. *Spoiler alert* I was wondering poor guy Rami Malik didn't get to say a word in the movie and then in climax; He said the most pivotal stuff. This is such a fine addition to the history of cinema.
