During the pandemic, Oprah Winfrey contacted Harvard professor Arthur Brooks, famed for his lessons on happiness, and proposed teaming up to write a book about finding enjoyment and meaning in your life. CBS News' Norah O'Donnell talks with Winfrey and Brooks about their collaboration, "Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier," and about the importance of accepting unhappiness in order to gain fulfillment.

When you have money it's easy to say money doesn't bring happiness. I agree that the pursuit of money beyond what you need to be comfortable wont bring happiness (just the opposite), but having no money makes it harder to be happy when you have to worry about where your next meal will come from.

They say it because it is true. I am no more happy today as a 48-year-old with plenty of money than I was when I was a 23-year-old making $500 a week and living with three roommates. In many ways I am LESS happy because many close family members and friends are now gone. No amount of money will bring my parents, grandparents or brother back from the dead.

Yeah, my thought exactly. I know what would make me happy: a bloody great pile of money! I've never understood fabulously wealthy people whining about their "happiness". Yeah, sure, no matter how much money you have, your personal emotional issues don't magically go away, but not worrying every damned minute of every damned day about how you're going to pay your bills is a helluva good start toward happiness. If poor Oprah isn't happy, she can sign her billions over to me and see how she feels then. Give me a freakin' break!

To slightly disagree with Oprah: Social media is often *less* than a snapshot of peoples lives, it is often greatly enhanced or *outright fabricated* , i.e. FAKE. Not to mention social media being a huge time suck, which leads to an economic drain as people try to "keep up", all coupled with enhanced anxiety and of course misinformation/mal-information. And of course there is a tiny percentage that results in benefit, such as keeping in touch from a distance, or distribution of legitimate helpful information.

The problem is that Oprah has invited so many frauds on to her Super Soul Sunday show that she’s lost all credibility. No one who made that much money could actually believe what those people say. So I’ve got to wonder why she’s promoting them. Here it is fairly transparent. We’re promoting a book. And then this suddenly becomes an advertisement for Amy’s Bread. Weird, Oprah spent 30 years trying to convince an audience that they would be happy if we all bought her “favorite things.” Now the message appears to be the opposite. Other than feeling that Oprah is a huge fraud, I’m a big fan.

Really bad timing on this piece, Sunday Morning. Oprah's happiness is displacing 1000s of Lahainans in order to purchase their ancestral land. Then she has the audacity to ask everyone else for money to "help" them. Just as Trump gets his sycophants to pay for his legal fees under the guise of funding his campaign. Books like this and "30 Days to Reduce Anxiety" by Harper Daniels, a simple mindfulness meditation book, have helped me become a lot happier, by helping me detach from my preconditioned thoughts about life and happiness.

Wonder if this timely interview is PR damage control in the wake of so much recent criticism after the Lahaina tragedy. Id be surprised if they're digging in their own pockets / donating their money, I believe they've simply pledged / guaranteeing to collect x amount from the public.

I think you’re missing the point! She said she doesn’t put her happiness in other peoples hands. Apparently reading other people’s comments is not the way to your enlightment. I wonder what is?

@@donnabaardsen5372 I don’t look to comments to verify anything! That’s not thinking for yourself. I don’t identify my reality with other peoples opinions and neither does Oprah…obviously. 😊

What is with the CBS fawning over Oprah? Gayle King's relationship with her? And Norah O'Donnell. What in the world is she doing in this softball interview? I thought she was supposed to be a serious journalist. It is "rich" that they devoted a segment to a billionaire's quest for happiness. Might she have asked maybe ONE question that would have prompted a stern reprimand from Simon & Shuster?

Wow. How could you say anything good about this woman! She loves to tell us poor people how to exist. Who tf would follow her guide to “getting happier”. Look what she is doing to the Hawaiians. Remember when someone shows you who they are, believe them. Have compassion for them… not her.

Since when does someone donate everything and have you even donated anything? Seems like some people can’t handle other peoples self-made realities very easily. I’m sure she’s going to read this comment and take it to heart LOL.

The secret of genuine peace and happiness comes from living our lives and abiding by the teachings of Jesus Christ, the greatest professor that this world has ever known. The holy Bible is mankind's manual to read, learn and to live by. Only then can any of us find true happiness in our lives. Finite man's knowledge and teachings can go so far and if he/she is not connected to the Source of all life, then his words are like a clanging cymbal.
