During the Blender Conference 2018 in Amsterdam, I demonstrated a way of simulating optical lens systems in Cycles in order to create more realistic bokeh, including defects and distortions.
I am NOT an expert in optical systems and have probably made mistakes in the lens designs, but the results turned out quite satisfying: cat's eye, aperture, refocusing, lens imperfections and narrow depth of field were all working (mostly).

Whoaaaa!!!!! Ive been trying to get custom Bokeh and create lens flares inside blender, failed thebokeh part, but kinda got a better result than this with the lens flare !!!! 😍

Surely you should be using an orthographic camera rather than a perspective camera to simulate the lens? You could input exact lens sizes as well. Your current set up is like putting a camera with a lens on behind another lens.

How do you get depth of field with the simulated lens after I create a magnifying glass in blender glass does refract and zoom in like a real magnifying glass but unfortuntely there is no depth of field, everything is perfectly sharp

The results look pretty terrible to be honest. Seems like a solution that just about anyone interested in simulating lenses would try first. The reason no one bothers to actually go further than that is because it's not practical and doesn't look good. The images in the talk look like a really *really* crappy lens, rather than something that you'd actually use for something. Definitely didn't understand why people clapped at the result for the rock, as it didn't look all that different or great.

It's an applause for the experiment for a more realistic expression. From this point on, there may be new renderings that are improved. Also, the virtual lens used is less than the actual camera lens, so the image quality seems to be very poor.

No first step has ever been pretty. It's the fact that he had an interest, set about investigating it, and made visible progress toward his goal in a way that implicates massive potential for the future. If everyone gave up just because the first release wasn't a gigantic step forward, we wouldn't have computers.

@@yesthatpaul There's no implications. Anyone who's looked into the subject of simulating camera lenses has tried and done all of these things to the same crappy results as seen in the vid. He's not special for it, he just happened to document his failure. This isn't a "first step" to anything. Cycles isn't meant for this kind of thing, never was, and never will be. The renderer isn't meant to replicate physical processes in an accurate way. If he was committed to getting a proper result, then he should have been using an unbiased renderer that eats "problems" like this for breakfast.

And why do you think so much pohotgraphers are using vintage lenses with imperfect optical specs today. Shooting film is more and more popular again and the half of the film look is due to those vintage lenses. Those as you'd say "crappy" looks are popular because they resemble real optics more than those perfect virtual cameras.

@@0liver_549 Vintage lenses are leagues better than this half-assed attempt. This doesn't even remotely resemble real optics. Don't be blinded by some uninformed opinion because the concept is "neat". Any way you shape it, it's worse than anything out there. The results are nothing to applaud.
