The topic of gut health is integral to optimizing our physical and mental wellbeing. Our microbiome has a direct relationship to our immune system, digestion, metabolism, hormones, mood, and more. Dr. Will Bulsiewicz is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology and is an authority on cutting edge medical research on microbiome science. He’s here to arm you with empowering information to achieve optimal health without restrictive dieting like elimination diets, but rather with abundance. We dive into the complexity of the gut, why eating a diverse plant-based diet is key to optimizing our gut function, and why a plant-predominant to plant-exclusive diet is the most scientifically proven way to support the microbiome.
Dr. B has incredible credentials. He’s a graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine and received his Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) from Northwestern University and a certificate in nutrition from Cornell University. He received the highest clinical award at UNC and was Chief Gastroenterology Fellow. He conducted research for and contributed to more than 20 scientific articles and has given more than 40 presentations at national meetings.
Dr. B’s book “Fiber Fueled” is a a must read and a personal favorite of mine for understanding the significant role that a diverse plant-based diet plays in creating a healthy gut. He is also soon to be releasing a second book, the “Fiber Fueled Cookbook,” which is an empowering guide filled with delicious recipes and information on how to heal the your gut with evidence-based research for long term health.
In the episode we cover:
* Dr. Bulsiewicz’s personal story to discovering plant-based eating and his transformation from sick to thriving
* The connection between the gut microbiome and our food choices
* The overwhelming body of evidence supporting the importance of plant diversity for optimal gut health
* The difference between cherry picking studies vs looking at the whole body of evidence, taking into account the hierarchy of evidence
* Why some people struggle with digesting plants and why these are the people who need this information the most, so they can heal their gut
* Why fiber is a crucial element to creating a healthy gut
* Stress and mood disorders related to gut health
* The direct relationship of our gut health to our immune system, digestion, metabolism, hormones, mood, etc
* How ancestral diets stack up against gut health
* Animal foods vs plants for gut health

Ellen I am a physical therapist and it is like this for us as well. We are very highly governed by the insurance companies and have a hard time getting equipment and sometimes just insurance to pay for therapy sessions. And just like how eating a predominantly plant based diet can assist with all of these health issues in a major way, so can physical therapy. Teaching people what muscles to stretch and strength and how to improve functional mobility majorly decreases the need for procedures/surgeries as well as pain pills bc sometimes people have pain due to musculoskeletal issues. There needs to be a major shift in the health care system all the way around.

@ellenfisher I am literally in tears watching the end of this podcast. This message has been so moving and truly transformative. I am so motivated to go plant-based now. I've been watching your videos for years and try my best to eat more plants but always end up eating animal products because of my family, but now I feel so strongly moved to stop ALL animal products. The studies discussed where just so amazing to hear about. I just ordered Dr. B book also. 💥

I'm an ethical vegan and have been for 15 years and while I eat loads of fresh fruit and veg, the health side of veganism hasn't been my main focus. I still have a few health issues and this all makes so much sense to me. I just ordered Fiber Fueled and I'm stoked for the 2nd part of this with Dr Will! This is seriously the best podcast episode I've heard in... I don't know. Ages. SO so informative.

He hit the nail on the head, medical professionals are so worn down with the hours of work and they aren’t educated on real healing …. They are so overworked they cannot see how to really heal a person. My dr friends were doing a cows milk only diet to try to lose weight 😞

So happy for this episode. I did a deep dive into the gut and body connection this summer, as a biology student, I was so surprised how clearly the science showed that health and gut were so interconnected. Even in connection with mental health and wellbeing. We are obviously not an isolated system; what we interact with affects us. I have been mostly planet-based for the last 4 months, and I haven't had so much energy in years.

The lack of nutrition education is so on point. Intro to nutrition used to be a prereq course for many health sciences in the college I attended for my nursing degree. However, six years ago that class was no longer required. It's so crazy because even an introductory class is better than nothing. However, some people are definitely listening. Now that I'm back in graduate school, I see textbooks mention how the microbiome plays a role in disease processes (even though it's not thoroughly discussed) which is what woke up my interest and led me here.

Why there is a HUGE difference between vegan & plant based. I know of vegans who live off of diet Coke & bagels vs people who are more concerned with health and eat whole plant foods. The word vegan just leaves a nasty taste in my mouth these days...
@_joannahans
@_joannahans 2 жыл бұрын
@@earthmama9597 being a vegan is for animals, not for the diet. 💛 Someone that labels themselves as vegan doesn’t eat animal products because they don’t want to harm animals. So that diet can consist of any vegan food, including bagels. Vegan doesn’t = health just like Plant based doesn’t = animal empathy. Both can be healthy / unhealthy. I’ve seen many people say they eat plant based but add a ton of unhealthy foods to their diet as well 💛😁
@earthmama9597

The word has been weaponized and a means to attack people, that is why it leaves such a bad taste. I know what it means but I refuse to label myself as vegan. We have too many labels and things separating us as a society as is, I'm not going unfriendly a person who freely chooses to eat meat and that is what our society is doing based on politics, religion, etc... Instead we should be encouraging people to support local vs box stores, sustainability, health & wellness, etc.... On a side note, I have been sensored, yes I know I spelled wrong, and am surprised you saw my comment!!! 😲

I love the idea of a plant based diet. I struggle with IBS. My system really struggles to digest all the plant foods. Then I find myself having low energy. I wish it was as simple as switching to a WFPB diet. I think switching from a standard American diet to a WFPB diet can potentially make you feel better immediately because you have been eating so horribly. If you already eat a pretty healthy whole food diet it’s harder to see positive change. Sometimes switching to a WFPD can make symptoms worse. How would you encourage some one in my situation to get help? How do you switch to a WFPD with bowel disorders and feel better? Unfortunately it’s not as easy to do as it is sometimes portrayed. Would love to hear your thoughts as one who would love to go plant based but hasn’t figured out how to do it successfully.

@S D They can if they get their guts fixed. And what do you mean by "most" people? Most people are not so sick that they have a hard time changing to a whole foods diet. Most people do great on it, and those who don't are an exception who can usually be helped.
@carinaekstrom1
@carinaekstrom1 2 жыл бұрын
@S D Throughout history humans ate what they found, and a lot of that was not healthy and still isn't. Humans are best adapted to eating plants, and only a few % animal matter can be tolerated without detriment. That is what science shows. Strictly vegan is just fine and probably optimal now that we have B12 supplements. Just because a food has B12 doesn't mean that it's an overall healthy food. All traditional civilizations have had access to legumes, seeds, grains, nuts and fruits, and have eaten plenty of them. Now we have supplements on top of that so we can avoid the animal foods that are mostly detrimental.
