What are the histologocal appearances of each type of oral mucosa and why does it appear that way?

Hi, *The lining mucosa* is non-keratinized as it has different cell types that lack keratohyalin granules. Different cell types in the epithelium lack a keratin layer. The connective tissue contains abundant collagen that is loosely arranged and usually not tightly bound to the underlying structures. *The masticatory mucosa* is keratinized and has a different cell layer arrangement as compared to the lining mucosa. Abundant keratohyalin granules in the cells and has a keratin layer at the top of the epithelium. The connective tissues contain less collagen and are usually tightly attached to the bone. The *specialized mucosa* contains both keratinized and non-keratinized epithelium. The epithelium also contains taste buds and taste receptors which makes this mucosa unique or specialized as compared to the other two types. Please do let me know if you have further questions.
