I've been in and out of this hobby for 5 years now, and the conclusion of this video should be required listening for anyone in this hobby, new or old. Myself included. Cheers.

To be honest it sounds pretty good. The sound has character unlike every keyboard nowadays that filled with foam, mounted on foam, foam in-between the pcb and plate.....

Uhhhh why does the Orange80 logo look exactly the same as the Orange83 logo. Ig it is just a common logo design. I don't think it is plagiarism just a huge coincidence.

It could be thought of as fairly harmless, but I think you've made large stretches with the title/description of this video and the things you said in the conclusion. I think your stretches only help to perpetuate misinformation surrounding older customs and the contributions of older, often departed, community members. None of this video is relevant to the question "how have keyboards changed in 3 years?"; you're talking about a singular keyboard from approx. 3 years ago that just so happens to be below par in a number of ways. The Orange80 is in no way representative of 3 year old customs, nor is it representative of customs much, much older than that. There were plenty of customs that far outshone the Orange80 in every objective way, even going back to the early 2010s, and plenty of those aren't even the "legendary" ones with huge aftermarket prices. The only exception to this is the firmware standardization we've now been exposed to, but it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that it took a while for that to happen organically. There's also the lack of "new" mounts, but I would argue that's a subjective improvement, not an objective improvement. Even assuming the latter, the first gasket mount designs (not all realized) were designed & spitballed in 2015/2016. The use of breakout boards is, again, subjective; some people legitimately prefer a mini USB simply attached to the PCB (and for what it's worth - the first custom which implemented a breakout board was designed in 2013). Do you honestly think that "mount locations" have progressed much over the years? Most people still use the A87 acrylic casing locations (same as Jane V2) - an open-source casing (designed in 2010) for a community-designed PCB. Either that, something very close, or a series of aesthetic/convenient/logical points. It's not something there's been conclusive experimentation/improvement on. I think it's pretty shortsighted to refer to the community of the old as "sleepy"; it was smaller, less funded, and more focused on affordable experimentation & collection. And yet, it was within the very small group of Western designers that many of these "innovations" were first thought up. As a member of the Western communities, I was slightly irked to hear you say it. If I were a member of the Korean keyboard community on the other hand? I'd be flat-out insulted. Without the members of kbdmania & OTD none of these keyboards would exist. And without kbdlab and the Western forums, none of it would've been continued. There were infinitely fewer members/designers on kbdmania/OTD, and a much smaller knowledge base to draw from, hence the lack of iterative improvements (subjective or objective), but in terms of the attention to detail and the thoughtfulness of the designs? They were on par, if not above, most customs we see these days. I'd also say that, in terms of build quality, customs of the old had their issues; it was hard to get things manufactured pristinely (e.g Matrix) at the quantities they were dealing with. But they still far eclipsed the Orange80. Most of those oldtimers would've been too ashamed to sell, or even gift, something of such bad quality. tl;dr I don't think the Orange80 is a fair example of a 3-year old custom or even a 10-year old custom. I think this should've been kept as a review, rather than an overarching comparison of eras. In that respect, the only thing you undoubtedly got correct is that people have more options today. It's a bigger hobby, not a more passionate or diligent one. P.S. I only took the time to write this because I've enjoyed much of your other content. I think you made a misstep with this video and wanted to try and bring it to your attention. There's too much misinformation being spread for it all to be combated, but something about this was particularly saddening to me. I apologise if my tone comes off harsh, I don't mean any of this in an aggressive way, I just feel strongly about the history of this stuff.

Well said. An unpopular idea to think that keyboards are worth thousands of dollars when they are not that much different than the common customs like kbd stuff. Sure, some keyboards are limited runs, its just silly for designer not to make more. They would rather see their keyboard sells for higher and higher prices, that they would somehow feel that they are important or something egoistic. All keyboards are essentially the same.
@Badmuthaa
@Badmuthaa 3 жыл бұрын
Why would a designer want to see their boards flipped? If you ask why most don't do unlimited/big runs it has more to do with QC and an increased workload than anything else. Like it was said in the video, don't be mad that you missed out on a board you wanted, there'll be 10 other boards just like it. I'd urge you to actually talk to designers before you come to that conclusion...

@@Badmuthaa Ummm actually Gergoplex, Everest, Planck Light, Red Hat, and Keychron K3 are fundamentally different keyboards than literally anything you can just buy off the shelf or through another group buy. Maybe if you actually did research before writing KZfaq comments, you would know that.
