Well said!! If I was still living in South Africa, I would head to Orania to live, for sure. We got out in 1994 because we could see the writing on the wall and thank God we left when we did. My father was a boer through and through and he taught his children about patriotism, discipline and respect. We never left because we wanted to, we left because we felt we had no other choice. It's a pity we didn't stay and move to Orania. It's too late now. Been living in the UK for 19 years.

Proud member of this tiny town, cleanest town in Africa well run organised financially stable. Absolute gem in the middle of the Karoo. Never ever hear racist remarks in the town. The residents need to be left alone.

Quite a few people here have asked for English subtitles. I would agree. Shows the interest. I'm in South Africa and can understand Afrikaans, except a few words here and there. The video gives good and interesting information about Orania. I could have added English subtitles, but the video is not unfortunately enabled for community contributions, so I couldn't. I've just done an English transcript of it. It would be good if it could be pinned. ---- White Orania Unity in similarity. Orania: Exclusively white. Orania: Source of media sensation. Orania: Where Apartheid lives on. Orania: The little town that racism built. Orania: Valley of the Afrikaners. Orania, a small Northern Cape town between Hopetown and Petrusville, is internationally known, because there is an exclusive white Afrikaner community living there. Orania was originally an unfrequented, nameless settlement of the Department of Home Affairs. It lies on the bank of the Orange River. Secede, or rather, the Afrikaner Freedom Front, bought the land in 1991 and called it Orania. Professor Carel Boshoff, the father of Orania, was the son-in-law of Dr HF Verwoerd, Prime Minister of South Africa in the 1960’s, and more well known as the Apartheid leader. Carel Boshoff’s son, also Carel, took it over from his father. Carel Boshoff senior has recently passed away. The total population is more than a thousand, and it is growing annually. The ‘Small Giant’, what Orania’s symbol is called, depicts everything. The ‘Small Giant’ represents a small man, who rolls up his sleeves, and on his own steam does everything that is necessary to establish his own future. Orania is an Afrikaner cultural and political movement to preserve the Afrikaners’ heritage and ensure their future. At least, that is how it is described in their desires. But, to what lengths will Oranias go to achieve that? Archive material. Prof Carel Boshoff, founder of Orania, “For the Afrikaner nation to continue living on in Africa as a nation, there are three conditions that he must have. The first is an own piece of land, the second is self-determination over own institutions, and the third is self-work with him executing his own work. And, it must be built from scratch out of the ground, if the Afrikaner is serious about his future.” The nerves are troubled when someone visits Orania for the first time. You expect an over-dose of racism, political hot-headedness, marching boots, and be caught in a type of concentration camp. Ha ha, watch out. This town is so small that you can easily drive past it. Small it can be, but has made big headlines, and were mostly negative. Now one can wonder, “How can these abandoned streets provoke so much criticism?” Lida Strydom, Orania’s Information Official, easily answers difficult questions. What makes Orania different? In Orania we also have the same language, culture, and religious history. The only thing that differs is the working together. We use our own people for all the work in Orania. Why the Northern Cape? We must get an area that is populated by us, where we can form the majority. And, this Northwest Cape was the area that the research pointed out would be the best for the whole project. Years ago there was an initiative to do it at Morgenzon. The Orania workers worked very hard there and tried very hard, but it simply did not work out because there are too many black people, too many other population groups. A Racist town? We know of various journalists who are specifically sent to Orania to scratch out racism. Orania is not free from racism, just like Pretoria, Bloemfontein and Potchefstroom isn’t free from racism. But, in our nature we are not racist. Are other races and languages welcome? How are people selected? The selection process is actually a dependent, information process. That is to explain to people what Orania is. And, that people aren’t disillusioned after staying here for a time. I think that’s the most important reason. That’s not to say you may not, and you are welcome. I reckon it’s inclusive, it’s not exclusive. The person must at the end of the day decide for himself if he will fit in with the ideal.

Is it possible, or black people, is it possible? We operate within the Constitution, and no-one can be excluded according to it. The fact is that we are a goal driven community. We expect people to fit in with the goal driven rules of Orania. We had at a time, long ago, an American, and we had a Portuguese, who stayed for a while. But, we found out that the people, as we explained to them, don’t stay long. We get, from time to time, a man who will try to show in a striking way that he can fit in. But, we quickly come to realise that it’s a joke, but we handle everyone in a standard way. I had a guy who on a good day asked me if he could come and stay here. In a short and sweet way I said to him yes. After the time he asked me if I’m serious. I said yes, exactly how serious he was when he first put forward the question. Orania is a secluded and a closed knit community, typically like the white small towns of old South Africa. We want people here who will fit in with the spirit of this community, and we prefer naturally an Afrikaner community. This is not a Boere heaven. This is a hard place, where you work hard, where there’re climate extremes, where there’s not so much money available, where there’s lots of giving. Orania Community Hall. Orania is a genuinely integrated community. The guy who removes the garbage, or cleans the streets, or fixes the ruins, is the same guy that sits next to you at church on Sunday. But, we all know each other, so we do well to each other. It is actually a privilege to be in such a community, where one doesn’t have to pay for everything. Everything is not measured in money. A person feels maybe ‘cool’ in Orania, therefore many whites who can’t find work or who were traumitised by crime look for a place here. (Welcome to Orania. Secure future for our people!) These people are called refugees. There are definitely people who come for the whole ideal, and what it’s understood to mean. But, these days what we get more and more are refugees. Resident. The poor Afrikaners, the real ones who are farmers, would come here in the middle of the night with bags, and we must accommodate them. (Own ground. Own work. New future.) The law of Orania is helping yourself. Many desperate whites come to Orania with all their possessions in a carton box to this small town. They are accommodated for two weeks, wherein they must get a job and a place to stay.

cont. 8:20 Although the Rand stays the legal tender, Orania has a symbolical unit that goods and services can be paid with. The Ora works like a coupon. The Ora is directly pegged to the Rand. If we have a million Ora in circulation, and that we have, and more than that, then we have a million Rand in the bank. Last year I think we had something like R400000 in Oras that went out of Orania, which never came back. The people buy it as souvenirs, take it with them, and the money stays in Orania. If you look closely at the Ora you’ll see that it is full of symbols. Everyone, from the hundred Ora note to the ten Ora note, has its own symbols that are brought up on it. There are two schools that parents can send their children to. A boarding school also accommodates children from outside the settlement. There is the CVO, or Academic, School that uses the classical teaching methods, where the teachers stand in front of the class and gives classes to the children. They focus on other things that People Schools would focus on. People School has a unique approach, driven by computers, where the child takes full responsibility for himself. He doesn’t have a teacher for the class. Classes are not given to him. He must determine his own way how he will study. A child of ten years learns to plan a full day’s work. Wynard Boshoff, Principle: People School. Every child works at his own pace and on the subjects that he gets a chance to at this stage. The result that we get is children who take much more ownership of their teaching career. They are not busy making the teacher’s day by doing their work. They are busy building their own teaching career. The ideology that the Oranians believe in, is lived out within the framework of the South African Constitution. What do you mean by a political expert? Prof. Kobus du Pisani, School of Social and Political Studies. It is written in the Constitution, the new Constitution, the right to establish a homeland, an Afrikaner homeland. We have very clearly said that we strive for a homeland, that we strive for a state where the Afrikaner can feel safe, where he can be himself, where he lives his culture, where he lives his religion, and live his educational preference, without looking over his shoulder. The culture wouldn’t stay the same. The language also doesn’t stay the same. The religion, all those facets of the Afrikaner culture, will change. Public opinions on Twitter. Join the Orania Movements groups on Facebook and Twitter. “Racism will not prevail… and it belongs in hell, do not forget who is tolerating who in this homeland…” Orania Movement’s reaction, “Orania treats everyone well. All South Africans are equal. Big mistake to say one group is tolerating another. SA belong to all of us.” “A country within a country is just not on. How can you build a house inside another house?” Orania Movement’s reaction, “It is not a country within another country. It is a form of selfdetermination (Article 235 of the constitution) by a cultural group." Despite vicious criticism and rousing of suspicion, often by their own people, the community is accepted by the state. Our launderette. “Where we wash and iron for your convenience.” Zuma, “My impression is different from what we at times hear, that there’s a community that wants to establish some republic somewhere. I think it is a community that is prepared to live within South Africa, but have a place for itself to exercise its culture, etc.” Perhaps it is that they expect less from the state than their countrymen, and are rather prepared to scratch out their own food. They do their thing there, they have the right to do it if they want to do it, and one must actually wish them good luck. Next time you drive that route, turn off to Orania. You might be surprised.

Rob Porter is the voice of reason. What the blacks will hate is if Orania is a success. Especially with the rest of South Africa and Africa such a mess under black control. For that reason they will want to destroy it - a white island of success in a black sea of failure would be too much of an indictment.

Beautiful place, beautiful city. In peace, with education, discipline, with well-defined rules and without expropriations. That this initiative, whether as private land or not, serves as a reference for the rest of the South African country. (Pragtige plek, pragtige stad. Apartheid defined. I think this is what Verwoerd had in mind and this is obviously a demonstration how it can work. Embracing your culture and acceptance of others in a different place. Paradise on earth. This makes sense. I tried looking for any signs of racism and found none. Not even a signpost saying "whites only". Great video, it made a huge impression on me. I will definitely stop over and visit to support you all and who knows, maybe even join you someday.

Actually, the majority of Africans have moved in their current areas in the 1820s during Zulu's mass-murdering rampage through eastern South Africa. Only the bushmen and the Xhosa have a legitimate claim that they were earlier in the area than the white people, and the white people had more than enough area to expand in at first without damaging the original tribal lands of the Xhosa. Zululand was never owned by the whites and during most of the Apartheid era it was a self-ruling territory. If you want to give the ownership to one 'group' in South Africa, then the Afrikaners have a much better claim to it than you, so you should be content with the current situation instead of moaning about your lost lands because you never owned them to begin with.

Afrikaners constitute a despised minority without any real political influence. Having completely lost their former dominance they no longer pose a serious a threat to anyone. On the contrary. Their continued existence as a distinct people is under permanent threat of a hostile majority intent on their destruction. In sight of these facts one must indeed be a very spiteful person not to feel any respect for their effort at saving what little remains of their collective identity. I, for that matter, am deeply impressed by their determination, inventiveness, patriotism, and resilience in face of so much resentment and undeserved scorn. I, therefore, wholeheartedly support their cause.

This is the point. In apartheid, the Afrikaners paid (as it was convenient for them) what they wanted to the natives, to do the less qualified work. But they did not accept that these workers lived near them or in the same neighborhoods. It started wrong. Therefore, it could not sustain itself in the long term. It had to end. Perhaps Orania is looking for the arrangement that was lacking at the beginning, when the old regime was formed, in 1948. Good future for the South African nation, with prosperity. (Dit is die vraag. Onder apartheid het Afrikaners (soos dit hulle gepas het) aan die inboorlinge betaal wat hulle wou, om die minste geskoolde werk te doen. Maar hulle het nie aanvaar dat hierdie werkers naby hulle of in dieselfde woonbuurte woon nie. Dit het verkeerd begin. Daarom kon dit homself nie op die lange duur onderhou nie. Dit moes eindig. I don't judge them. This is their choice. We have to keep in mind, though; that we are in this world to learn to get along with others, to love our neighbours. Acceptance of all races, understanding and tolerating diversity is part of the earthly lesson. So much good can be done to love unconditionally in the process of acceptance of our differences and to work towards healing and reconciliation.

Tolerance gets very difficult when you have more than 140 laws excluding you from being economically active because you are White. "acceptance of our differences" We understand an accept this 100%, hence we promote separate development. We have completely different standards in live. I grew up without load shedding, 2 USD to the Rand, potholes got filled, street lights, visible lines on the roads, a drivers licence in my ID book that didn't expire, my gun licence in my ID didn't expire, no electric fences, no farm attacks, unemployment of 75%, grants for the lazy and incompetent, corruption and state coffers looted etc. This is a failed state and you cannot sugarcoat the state of this country. The so called "Rainbow Nation" will never happen. Lets agree to disagree.

@Derek Chauvin Inheritance goes hand in hand with race. Its about race and different races have different standards and values. You cannot sugercoat this one. I grew up without 60 people getting murdered a day, didn't know loadshedding existed, the rivers were clean, potholes were repaired, etc. The list is endless. Its about race. The liberals denies this but we are different in so many ways.

I've sent them an e-mail asking them if I can join them. I was born in South Africa but left in 1994 just after the elections. I've lived for nearly 20 years in Scotland but I've always wanted to go home but never wanted to live in the "new" South Africa. My dad was a boer and my mum was born in Scotland so I had quite a diverse childhood. But I long to go home. I miss the people, the Afrikaans language, the food, the sun, the land. Here's hoping that they will accept me......:)

My kids go to a CVO school, the same curriculum as mentioned in the documentary and they receive far superior than what is available in the government schools today. They learn their own relevant history, they study the Christian Religion as part of their studies and the CVO schools had more than a 96% pass rate last year compared to state schools barely making a 70% pass rate. The sad part is the current state sponsored education is worse than Bantu education in the 80's, and thats progress?

I can agree. The state sponsored education system needs a complete refurb. It makes me think of that song 'The Wall' by Pink Floyd, with "We don't need no education." That was ahead of its time. When I did the English transcribe of the video, it was the first time I'd even heard of a CVO school.

Everyone is generalizing this to the extreme! If you need to swear or degrade or preach hatred to make a statement, then you have failed and discredited/lost your rationality of your reason, therefore losing due to your own lack of self control. I leave you with the following thought... If one apple is rotten in a batch of good apples, all the apples will become rotten. Always measure your choice to the love and life of Christ, and if there is any doubt, seek His Word.

Thank you for the gesture. We do not want to immigrate. Africa is in our blood. European countries and governments played a big roll forcing us into this dismal situation. They all see that it is just another failed state in Africa. But they keep on sending funds that gets stolen by the cANCer.

I stay in South Africa and understand Afrikaans, except a few words here and there. The video gives good and interesting information about Orania. Perhaps I could do English subtitles, but is so time consuming. The video is also not unfortunately enabled for community contributions, so I couldn't. I found that many Afrikaners are like many Americans, like with the isolation way of thinking, not thinking internationally. An Afrikaans film like this one not having English subtitles, is much like an American film, like Hollywood films, not having Metric subtitles.

I must admit this documentary did make me reassess my preconcieved notions of Orania. Although I will never support the idea of segregation, I do belive in the idea of creating a community in which hard-work, self-sufficiency, safety and strong community ties are prevalent.

It’s not segregation in itself that you should support. It is self determination. It’s about the freedom to choose. If you don’t have the freedom of association you have a forced association. Integration is positive when it’s voluntary. When it’s forced it becomes negative. It’s the same with segregation. It’s not that segregation was bad in itself it’s that Apartheid was forced segregation. This town is growing because people are volunteering to live there. They are going out of their way to live somewhere it is not easy to live (even as a European) and life their life the way they want to. It’s about autonomy.

I think if a group of people choose to preserve their culture, hey they are entitled to do so. There should be a place where you should call home, I am cool with it!!The Afrikaaner poeple are South Africans too. Remember many thousand years ago only Kooisan people occupied Southern Africa and then the Bantu people migrated from Northern africa to Southern Africa. So the Kooisan are the true rightful owners of this part of the world but they are not the ones chasing all the other races out. So since we are all South Africans let us all live happily within our wonderful country.

+Cartooniverse South Africa is in such a state at the moment, that people are giving up there careers and going to go work as street sweepers, simply because they think it is a safer and better way of life for them and their children. They didn't separate themselves from the problems, they just proved the problems are not of their making! There is a big difference. Wonder how many robberies, hi-jackings etc occur in Oranje compared to just one intersection in JHB or Pretoria

The only reason the ANC and the rest have a issue with a small town like Orania is the very fact that it will show all the failures as African leaders who've been in power for 25 odd years in Southern Africa . The small little town in the middle of know where which has its own Currency . Health facilities, businesses, water, housing etc. This is a clear image to how a small minority of people can live in a safe and beautiful place without interference from criminal and political vultures who seek to destroy a once so powerful southern African country. Who wouldn't want to live like this. .Everyone bringing there part to make sure the town is great . Awesome keep on . God bless. The cream of Europe in Africa !.

While the Afrikaners are definately very close to Dutch culture, I think they have evolved into their own people since the late 18th century on. The Afrikaners have lived there longer than the MAJORITY of the other peoples in the area, with perhaps only the Bushmen and Xhosa living there earlier. I also don't think that the Netherlands, which is already one of the most heavily overpopulated countries on this planet, can take in 3 million Afrikaners, and we wouldn't want that either considering Afrikaners speak their own language and are generally very christian and conservative compared to the Netherlands which is one of the most irreligious progressive countries on the planet.

My point is simply that ALL Afrikaners (or any1 else) cannot be grouped together with the Boers as I explained earlier. Neither is the term Boer interchangeable with Afrikaner any less than Scottish is with English & even many Scottish are wanting independence from England. Boers do not have a problem with other like minded peoples supporting their struggle being assimilated & I thought this point was actually what you were asking. Many non Boers support the Boers struggle for self determination

***** Although my current comment wasn´t pointed about the social situation in South Africa, I support your opinion. But for a non-afrikaans speaker (my mother tongue is spanish by the way) interested in international politics it´s important to have a channel of comunication to the realities uncovered by the mainstream media. We have the same problems that the afrikaner population in my country (Guatemala) were the ladino population slowly has been forced to retreat from the rural areas to the cities. Even worse, by manipulated the educational system, they deceived the youth to adopt an invented identity as "mayas" because the european, canadian and now american left-wing intervensionist goverments are pushing in this cultural warfare. That´s why I am interested in those succesful examples of people trying to preserve their culture.

According to the Oxford dictionary the word ‘discrimination’ means “recognition & understanding of the difference between 1 thing & another” People make distinctions because they value 1 choice over the other. Freedom does not exist when there is no opportunity to choose between different options. To ban "discrimination" would mean that people are not allowed to make distinctions as it concerns the nature of a particular discrimination & not the principle itself.

Its just to make distinctions when one’s own interests are served & success IS NOT based on the oppression of others. Racial Discrimination should only be illegitimate when people deliberately disadvantage others based on race which is certainly not the case in Orania however one cannot say the same for the country of South Africa with the ANC and their B.E.E policy as it oppresses white people based on their race. It should be outlawed as it is directed at intentionally harming others (whites)

@@pneron2032 How does it come about that to you it's not located there? Maybe you are using sort by newest, instead of by top comments. To search in the comments, would probably mean manually scrolling through them. The only other way is with Ctrl and F. But, that usually doesn't work. It has only worked once for me. The first paragraph is: Quite a few people here have asked for English subtitles. I would agree. Shows the interest.

It is important for them to speak only Afrikaans. If they spoke English or French, silly white liberals would try to move in and "reform" them. A lack of blacks means they probably have little or no crime, HIV/AIDS, ebola, or other traits that go hand in hand with a black population, and they want to keep it that way. If speaking a language the blacks do not understand helps in that objective, then go for it.

There are poor people also in Orania, but they are treated with dignity. They all have a job good enough for self-sustainability. There are not a lot of rich people, since outright materialism is completely agains the values of Orania. The people of the town are not only there for their own benefit, but also for the benefit of the community. Such a community can only by built on shared values. Those values can only be sustained if the gap between rich and poor is narrow.

Mixing cultures has failed, forcing people to live amongst eachother when living different ways of lives will create conflicts. Besides look at the crime rates when Apartheid was gone, these people live segrated so they can live safer and happier lives. Personally I´d think a Afrikaner state wouldn´t be a bad idea for these people.

Forgotten history lol I think you need to learn SAs history & how organisations set about deliberately erasing the Boers identity under Afrikaner nationalism. The Boer are a separate nation of people that have a different history to the Afrikaners. You confuse these 2 groups together then ask "in what way do i defend the macro state of South Africa" It is very important to know the history of a region & a people to understand how we got where we are today.
