Some of them are pretty nasty about it, too. One species traps the insect in its cup, holds it for several minutes while the sticky pollinia adhere to its back, and then release the bug to fall for it again and fertilize the next orchid.

I read a sci fi short story where a human analogue species evolved with an orchid analogue species. The orchid flower mimicked the female human. Surprisingly the human population was quite low. Anyway, a wayward space traveller landed on this world, discovered the unusual properties of the orchids, took some samples, went back to civilization and bred varieties that mimicked famous women of history, like Cleopatra. He became quite rich.

I thought orchids were just really pretty flowers that were tough to grow, like roses. I didn't know they relied on fungus to even grow, or that they mimicked anything. I'd like if you would talk about coral cactus. I picked a few up for a school project and I found out through extra research at home that they're not actually cactus. I don't know what happened to them, but they all died. I haven't owned a plant since :')
