I'm new to orchid growing and I enjoy your videos so, so much! And I'm going to take it from you to start naming them. I'm naming my first one Buddy, in your honor! I fell into this new hobby when we first quarantined in March 2020. I'm totally hooked! I just spent A LOT of money on new solar shades to turn an unused room in my house into the light source I need. My husband says I better stick to this hobby for the amount of money I've been throwing at it! 🌸

Dear Orchid Whisperer, I thank you for the detailed advise. My mother recently passed under terrible extreme health problems, just so complicated. What I want to say is I purchased my mini orchid 6 mo later. Now being a year, and now is 6 mo. Later from purchase. I had many plants from my mother's slips and such, and I thought I had a green thumb for 15 years . Now this orchid I realized needed much different help than I was used to , so Thank you with so much love. Mary

Thank you orchid whisper for another infomative video, I have 2 minis one in water Coulter the other in hydraton the one in water Coulter the roots keep getting longer and longer but no new leafes I've hade it about 4 month I'm hoping it will do something other then prudence long roots mabe it's not getting enough nutrients so I'll have to Change that rutine, the one in hydraton is doing wonderful, and becouse it drys out more quickly it gets more nutrition couse I fertilize every time I water, so your observation is correct ,thank you for sharing your wonderful knowlege with us. Can't wait to see your vandals in bloom😊
@OrchidWhisperer6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sigrid! Thank you for sharing your story and experience with your minis. I had several of my minis in water culture for about a year, and the roots would grow long but the leaves would stall. Then, after about 6 months, the roots would start dying back. I really think they need more wet/dry cycles in my environment to do well, like yours in hydraton. Even in SWC, they didn't do well. As soon as I changed them to moss or bark, they bounced back very quickly. Keep me posted on yours, it's interesting for me to hear from other growers and their experiences. Thanks always for watching my friend and have a great day! Always wonderful hearing from you! :)

I water orchids with used aquarium tank water. The nitrates are absorbed by the planting medium and then transferred to the plant.
@OrchidWhisperer6 жыл бұрын
That's a great source of nitrogen. If I had an aquarium, I would definitely water them this way. You have quite a growth cycle going on here...using your aquarium water on your orchids that supply the honeybees with the resource they need to make honey for you to eat....That's using resources wisely! :)

I killed my 2 in my first month of growing by overwatering...so i do need to check the roots going silver and i wont spray them any more so no water van be inbetween leaves. I have no luck with them. And yeah they are hungry thirsty beasts. Im so amazed by your success. Next spring i wil try again. Ty for these beginners tips. I love them. Kind regards rose🌹
@OrchidWhisperer6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your sweet comment, Rose! Most people overwater phals when they first start growing them, so when you know that beforehand, it's going to set you up for success in the future. I've grown them for so long, they're my friends. :) I think you will do well with them now, and Spring is a wonderful time to buy phals! Have a great day my friend! :) Amy

@OrchidWhisperer5 жыл бұрын
Hi Susie and thanks so much for your sweet comment! :) I like to repot my mini phals soon after buying them, because usually they're in a moss plug where the roots can't breath. The best thing to do is to wait until it blooms out and the blooms have time to harden....and then you can repot in fresh New Zealand sphagnum. I have a video about repotting minis, here's the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pLyadtSrsb7IZok.html Happy growing and have a great day! :)

When do you expect these to bloom? I bought a mini for a friend who has a green thumb. Liking hers, I bought one for myself. Hers died - and mine has been getting roots, no flowers, however. Two weeks ago I repotted the little dear into an orchid mix - and into a pretty ceramic orchid pot/tray. I then watered it - and sprayed a bit of fertilizer. So far, all looks/seems well. Oh, and southern window - here in southern CA - but the sun doesn't stay long in that window.

Hi and thanks so much for watching! Phals usually bloom once a year, but I've waited 2 and a half years for a few of mine to re-bloom that first time! It does take time for them to acclimate to your home. Happy growing! :)

You are so articulate in your explanations// I agree with the frequency of fertilising.. In nature orchids are probably fertilised every time it rains!!!
@OrchidWhisperer6 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael and thank you so much! I was just thinking about how orchids get nutrients everytime it rains...in small amounts, and that really changed my way of thinking with my fertilizing regimen. It has worked really well for me. Thanks again for watching and happy growing! :)

Which correlates to how I water. I have a variety of plants, including rose/weigela/coleus/fuchsia started from cuttings taken before first frost. When I do water changes on my aquariums, I save some in milk jugs. I do water changes weekly and vacuum gravel each time but especially when I rinse out sponge filters or filter media before I replace with new, I definitely save that water. The only thing used to water all the plants. Filtered, aerated and organically fertilized and you cannot over fertilize. I've even got a variegated banana going on 3 years in a too small pot that came in as a pup separated from the mother outside when cut down before winter. I never thought of a banana for a house plant. 😂 Now I'm in orchids and they seem to love it.

I would love to know, how do you get such an attractive growth habit from your phals? I love the way your phal leaves kind of spread out and grow in different directions. Do you turn them somehow to get them to grow that way? I especially love Buddy's growth habit.

how often do you water your mini orchids?
@OrchidWhisperer6 жыл бұрын
Hi! The frequency of watering them differs due to temps, humidity, and the media they're growing in. I watch the roots to see when they need to be watered. In the summer, I might water them every few days, and in the winter they might need watering every 4 or 5 days, or sometimes once a week. Thanks for your question and have a great day!

My Phal's have gnats. It started a week ago. I have three minis and one old large one. I have them in bark. I have been watering minis 2x a week lg one once a week. I have been following your schedule. Since getting gnats I have been spraying with peroxide solution ,and watered with peroxide water.mi have cider vinegar solution in little bowl nxt to them. Also have a fan going. But still have them. I am going to repot them with fresh bark mix. My main concern is the mini phal that seem to have the most infestation has spikes. If I repot will it make buds fall,or dry up?
@OpinionatedChicken594 жыл бұрын
Gnats are so annoying and they always seem to come back, I started keeping my orchids in glass bell jars which has really helped keep the bugs away.

The little miniature that I bought that I did show on one of my latest videos I think it's called potting and repotting that one has seven leaves and it's starting to rebloom at the end of the old flower Spike and I love that little thing I love its flowers so if it gives me more I'm going to be just tickled to death because I keep him on my kitchen windowsill. It's so funny my dog Finney is all into our conversation so she's putting her nose all up in the phone so that I pay attention to her instead of you. Have a blessed day Amy!👉👵👈

Hi Caroline! I don't know yet if that leaf is full size. But I noticed this morning he's getting a new leaf! :) I've never seen double margins on a leaf before, I do believe this jumbo mini phal has a sense of humor! lol! "Jumbo Mini" - isn't that an oxymoron? ;-) So far, my mini phal is loving the sphagnum moss...I think it certainly is the perfect media for new growers. You can almost 'set it and forget it!" Hope you are enjoying the beautiful Tennessee fall weather! Well, except maybe for today, LOL! :)

Hi Caroline! LOL!! Yes, "jumbo mini" is definitely an oxymoron! haha I laugh everytime I say that! I'm so happy to hear that your minis are enjoying the moss, it's really an easy media to work with and they love it. Today, we're in a cold freeze here in Tennessee...but it's still so beautiful. I think Fall temperatures are finally here. Have a great day my friend! :)

Have my miniatures in water culture but glad I’m picking up some NZ premier spaghnum moss from the US next month! Have you any idea Amy why the miniatures are fine for a year and then stall. I don’t have any idea except maybe they need more fertiliser in water culture than normal phals. There’s obviously something missing for them.🤔🤔🤔🤔
@OrchidWhisperer6 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris! I think you might be right, they need more fertilizer than regular phals, and more sunlight. I still can't figure out why mine stalled, they were getting fertilized, but maybe not enough. I'm glad to hear that you're getting some NZ sphagnum moss soon, that way if yours do stall, you can repot them in moss. But yours might do well in water culture, Chris...you never know. Just because mine stalled doesn't mean yours will. Please keep me posted, because it's interesting to me to hear from other growers. I can only speak from my own experience until I hear other growers' success stories. Have a great day my friend and happy growing! Always great hearing from you! :)

Thanks again for another video that I needed, I also took my minis out of water culture, I don't have any smaller pots I have them in regular pots because I didn't have any smaller pots, do you think they will be ok? Or should I place place them in small yogurt containers and will drill holes in them, thanks again and God bless
@OrchidWhisperer6 жыл бұрын
Hi Cynthia! I would place them in the small yogurt containers with holes drilled in the bottom...which is a good idea btw. The regular sized pots will be too big for them...choose containers that will give them room for a year or two of growth but not more. Blessings to you my friend and have a great day! :)

I purchased two mini Phals and a regular size Phal last summer. I already owned a full size Phal for over a year. I had promised myself that if I could get that orchid to bloom again that I would buy another one. So I ended up buying three more. Anyway, I am now searching to find out how to get those minis to bloom! After they were done flowering I repotted them. They were in those tiny two inch pots that they sell minis in. I put them into four inch plastic orchid pots. They have grown new leaves and lots of roots. They seem extremely happy but no flower spikes! My full size Phals go through regular cycles of blooming and growing leaves. They are both in bloom right now but not the minis. What am I doing something wrong? They get the same fertilizer that the full size Phals do, of course, they are watered at different times due to the difference in drying times. I hate to water them more often in order to fertilize them. I was thinking about getting some time release fertilizer to add to their pots but am unsure. I don’t want to over do the fertilizer. I just moved them to grow lights that are a bit more powerful than the one that they had been under. I really don’t know what else to do. My plants have a southern exposure but we live in a forest and have trees blocking a great deal of light much of the year. Grow lights are the only way that I can successfully grow plants indoors.
@OrchidWhisperer3 ай бұрын
I think you did the right thing bumping up the light just a bit. Make sure they get enough of a cooldown in the fall...down to about 65F for 4 to 6 weeks. They will hopefully bloom for you next year. Happy growing! 😇🌺🌷
