Like many of your videos that don't start off with a wood blank, at the beginnings I often think, "How's he going to make this wonky piece of wood work?" And you do make it work every time and this is no different. Well done, Mike! 👍

My first thought when I saw all of that spalting was "saturate it with CA glue to keep it from coming apart when it starts spinning." Proving once again that you have a far better feel for the wood than I do. It came out magnificent, and there's no reason for you to apologize for the number of winged bowls you make. If they're as beautiful as this one, go for it! I hope your eBay offerings work out well. I just wish that I could afford to bid what they are worth. Oh, well, just another joy of living on a fixed income. Keep up the awesome work. I look forward to your next video.
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton 8 ай бұрын
Hi Dave, I had a previous piece I had to do that with, used a lot of CA glue to make it turnable. This was in a much better state. I'm slightly embarrassed how much some of the pieces are going for on eBay which I realise is pricing people out the game so I was thinking of making a few pieces and selling for a smaller fixed fee. All the best and thanks as always for your amazing support.

I seldom read other people’s comments before making my own but today is an exception: I have never bought a blank; every piece I make is either from offcuts or tree trunks. I love Spalted wood. and this piece turned out stunning. I cut trees on my property for firewood, which can sit for a while, so Spalting happens quite a lot. I will often saturate the punky wood with CA. It's a balance between cost etc. But sometimes the grain is worth it. I have to admit, I have not turned a winged bowl. Maybe I should go out to my fire pile and see if anything is suitable.

Once again fantastic work Mike! I love the look of spalted wood and fortunately I have an overabundance of it right now. When Hurricane Michael came thru our neck of southern Georgia in 2018 it took down a huge pecan limb out of one of my trees. I cut it up and let it sit outside for the last five years and every bit of it is spalted. I'm going to lose a small portion of it to rot but the rest is going to be a joy to turn. Keep up the good work and thanks for all of the ideas you inspire.

I enjoyed it! I can see where your passion for the winged bowl comes from now. The contrast between the perfect hemisphere and the original natural shape is striking. Looks to me like this was a very brave yet worthwhile choice not to cut the blank into a rounder profile to start. With potentially dodgy wood and the chance of the piece going for a high velocity walk with those sharp corners digging into everything in its path. Danish oil... does it smell baconish? Thank you Mike as ever for your dedication and persistence.

That turned out amazing I love the spalting and the wings. Well done I had no idea it was possible to turn like that.

Thanks Shirley, these are a lot of fun, you have to compete with a bit of wobble and the risk of catching your fingers on the wings but it's all good 😂

I really admire the depth of patience you have and the way you work the wood to give the best results. One question. Because the wood is spalted is their any chance of that developing into rot or does the finish stop that from happening?
@MikeHolton

Hi Eric, the finishing and sealing process stops any further decay and it will remain this way as long as the bowl in kept dry. All the best and thanks for the question, Mike 😀

The bowl looks terrific. Well done. Spalting patterns always add a LOT of visual interest to a piece. You did well to get this turned and sanded with the soft and punky areas. I struggle with density differences. The gouge cuts evenly but then the sanding causes waves, so the piece gets put aside. I have some large pieces of spalted silver maple. I am lucky that the wood is not punky, just has the wonderful spalting patterns. I was hoping that the out of balance bowl would not come off the lathe. A big relief it stayed on the chuck. I have used poplar but only for flat work. Easy wood for working. Can be a challenge for staining. Dave.

Thanks Dave, the sanding was not too bad after I had it stabilised a bit with shellac, I've certainly had worse. The poplar was fine but it does not like to take a shine, is that normal in your experience? I can imagine it being hard to stain. Mike

It stains easily - just not evenly. I had to apply a Minwax product called "Stain Pre-Conditioner" which is a very dilute polyurethane in solvent. After the stain pre-conditioner dried, I was able to get a more consistent stain. I then applied Minwax polyurethane on top of the stain. Dave.

@@lv_woodturner3899 Ah I see what you mean, I've heard that you can use a thinner than usual shellac sealer as well as a pre stain. I've tried it a couple of times and it seems to work fairly well.

Beautifully turned Mike. The spalted wood looks great and adds some very interesting character to the piece. In regards to needing any dental work done, I'll be sure to send you my wooden dentures if they need any work 😁!

The winged pieces seem to be going well. They look good. I can't see how you can keep going without sponsorship and selling items. Because the wood and resin is not cheap. Anyway keep going good luck. JC

Thanks, I get a revenue from KZfaq and I get resin free from my sponsor which helps. I just about break even on the channel which is fine as I have a full time job.
