The sharpening stone looks like a really good way of introducing a highly efficient grinding paste to the drive sprocket and bearings when mixed with the inevitable bar oil that will be thrown around in there.

Simon, yes it's a dumb idea, a marketing ploy for the mechanically illiterate and lazy. Hope all good with you, cheers

Thank you for the video and a glance at the internal hardware. I was curious at the insides so I could compare to the Makita 16 inch corded. This one is around 100 US dollars while the Makita is roughly 150 more. There's no direct comparison between the two I can find. I've only found one Makita repair video. These two are at the top of my list, im trying to justify the extra 150 into the Makita. Again thank you for the video.

Hi, interesting comment. Many tools are "badged" from the same manufacturer, though I'm not sure if the quality of parts are the same. Cheers

Hi Andy. If a washing machine motor is rated at 350w for the spin phase it is hard to imagine this motor going over 2kw! I had a very decent cheap Lidl mitre box saw years ago. Chopped and chopped and chopped until the reduction gear stripped and that was that. No parts for these machines. There is an interesting trade off emerging. A machine like this that is buy use forget. No fixing ever. Maybe a warranty replacement. Or The device as a service. You buy a laptop/ car/ phone/ é scooter etc. you can’t replace any parts because they are all chipped and the device can recognise a non oem repair. Maybe for the bodger the cheap tat is more acceptable to paying a monthly subscription to use a chainsaw. It’s a natty oil pump. The irony is outstanding. You were in there in seconds and could have replaced any of the parts. But you can’t get replacement parts! Cheers from windy Ireland!

Owen, that's the heart of the problem: an over rated motor with poor cooling and it's on an occasional user chainsaw that we all know wont be used correctly. Why Oregon would badge such a saw is beyond me, pure marketing nonsense. Get that wet grass cut, cheers

Andy, this is the same as a Qualcast, the brushes are available ( allegedly) from Oregon dealers , probl’y not in stock I don’t think other parts are stock able

Hi, yes I'm thinking it's just bought in and "badged", no thought of customer service. To my mind the motor is too small for the wattage and it's bound to burn out if used on big stuff with a blunt chain, chees

@@TheInfoworks Your saw has a very strong familial resemblance to two non-identical saws badged 'Florabest' I found in my father's garage. Sprocket, chain-tensioning, oil channel, all identical & motor extremely similar. No sharpening gizmo & other (cosmetic) diffferences. One soft-start, the other (older looking) not. Both badged as 2200W. And one had suffered just the same fate as yours. I think your surmise is spot-on. Thanks for an interesting examination.

@@falfield Thanks for the info, this sort of thing does company's reputation no good,. I'm thinking the motor is too small for the rated capacity, cheers

Andy, the Kobalt brand 18" corded chainsaw that was available from Lowes has almost the exact same design in every way except motor orientation and of course voltage rating here in the US. I've had two burn out in the same fashion as yours. They are fantastic chainsaws when they run but they do not get adequate cooling and suffer from these design faults. In my opinion, either the brush holders' plastic have too low of a melting point (causing heat to rapidly increase as it warps/arcs), and/or the brushes are too soft. Additionally, I noticed a lot of the wire seems quite anemic for its 15 ampere rating on 120VAC. No idea why they thought giving it a 5 year warranty was a good idea, or offering 3 additional years for protection plans--but it is now no longer available for sale if that gives any indication of the failure. Because I love how this cuts I'm looking to replace the motor. Please let me know if you happen to find a source for these motors, I've checked many vacuum/blower brushed motor importers to no avail. On a side note, I don't mess with the self sharpening system at all.

Yes, as with most corded brush motored units, continuous use causes damage and this is found with blunt cutters. I agree the self sharpening is complete nonsense, cheers

Same thing happened to a worm drive skilsaw I brought from Canada, shame when a good tool goes down

Some tools are grand in theory but not in application, as I suspect this is the case with this saw, cheers

Isn't this the Oregon Power Sharp system? I always thought they had a special scabbard you put on and pushed it into a log which created lots of sparks to sharpen it.
@TheInfoworks2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment. Yes similar and just as ineffective at creating a really sharp saw and setting the depth gauges, cheers

@@TheInfoworks The guy I did my chainsaw training with, used to advocate them for the guys he used to train who felled BT and Power Line (Likes of UKPN, Western Power, etc) timber poles. None of them ever maintained their chain or saw, and so with one straightforward operation, they could keep them sharp. He didn't advocate PowerSharp for any tree work! Horses for courses at the end of the day, a bit like this poorly chainsaw.

All that arcing around the commutator does not look good, I agree Andy. Shame. I also don't like that sharpening stone - as Thornwarbler says, it's just a steel grinding paste generator. I don't understand the tooth shape at all, I've never seen anything like those. Plus the sharpener is going to miss the depth gauges completely so you'd still have to check those from time to time. I resurrected my incredibly basic Black and Decker saw from the 80s, after my Stihl saw of the same age was stolen, and I must say, for small use near to mains it's ideal - even though it's not very powerful and has no chain brake, so I have to be careful, luckily it's only a short bar. Cheers, Dave

Dave, good to hear from you, yes it's all a bit bizarre and a marketing ploy. I have seen that cutter profile once before for a specialist use but it wasn't sharpened in such a silly way. I have one of those 80's Black and Decker chainsaws with amybe a 10" bar. Bought it to cut roof rafters. Cheers

@@TheInfoworks Yes, that sounds like the B&D saw I have - it has only a manual oil pump too. But I've been cutting the weekly woodpile all winter with it without problems - I do keep it sharp mind you. I bought a new chain, but haven't fitted it yet as the original still has plenty of tooth length. (btw Andy, Tim Hunkin has a new series of videos out) Cheers, Dave
@TheInfoworks2 жыл бұрын
@@noakeswalker Dave, yes seen the one about levers etc, great info about cranks. On my B&D the chain oil manual pump packed up so I grafted on one of those small upright oil cans. Then much later I learnt real facts about chainsaws. Sad to hear you had your Stihl nicked. cheers

Shame that , would of been handy as an emergency saw if you run out of 2 stroke etc etc etc .... you win some , you lose some .. on the note of self sharpening .... , I'd be intrested to hear if anyone thinks these type of systems work .cheers . .

Yes and with our large solar generation on sunny days it would be running on sun. Thornwarbler has a very good point on this sharpening system, personally I think it is a very poor substitute for skill, cheers
@randacnam73212 жыл бұрын
These sharpening systems are fast at the expense of wearing out the chain, which is special and thus more expensive cuz carbide link for dressing the stone. The only thing they are good for is emergencies where you need a sharp chain now and don't have time to sharpen or replace the chain.
@tollesbury12 жыл бұрын
Good try......never mind. Stick with a normal saw. Normal chain. Normal chain tensioner. Much safer. 👍👍😂😂. Great video. Thank you.
