A few years ago, Oregon became the first state in the country to approve a measure decriminalizing small amounts of drugs. Now, the state is recriminalizing them after opioid deaths in Oregon tripled between 2019 and 2022. Many of the deaths have been attributed to the rise in fentanyl, leaving state officials and authorities scrambling to find a solution. Meira Gebel, a reporter for Axios Portland, joined CBS News to discuss the situation.

@@veramae4098ah so places like Portugal, Netherlands, Spain, Finland, Norway, and most other European nations that also do a serious rehabilitation system with drug decriminalization just got lucky? You have to actually stick it to the rehabilitation system you cant just tell a druggie to get help and expect them to go get help, you have to coerce them like anyone else who has been hesitant to do anything in their life. Set them up for rehabilitation and rehab shelter if theyre homeless, go through psychiatric therapy, have some sort of post-rehab employment program which is the big BIG kicker. You need to have an action plan for the addicts after theyre done going through rehab and cant kick them back out to the curb, though the US bi-party system shafts anyone for luck for genuine change since its always a tug of war between whatever flavor of the decade is to each party's agenda.
