I can't agree with you more about the 500X. I got my 2020 about 7 weeks ago after watching your videos and hearing your comments, among other reviews. The 500x is a fantastic bike for $. There is synergy in the components, excellent buid quality, looks great, very relaxing to ride, one of the best windshields out of the box, great gearbox, great ergos, nice display, very comfortable seat and suspension, satisfying exhaust note, very peppy for a 471 cc engine and bike size, smooth engine, nice clutch,...and the list goes on and on. I ran the tank dry at 490 km (306 miles) and the engine was still being broken in. The gauges are telling me that my average fuel consumption is 3.5 L/100km=67 mi/USgal. For reference my other bikes are R6 and a 250 EXCF. I am 5'11" so probaly near the max rider size for this bike and the standing position is not as comfortable as I would like, however the bike is still very comfortable overall. I plan to rotate the handlebar forward a little to give me more room standing up. For comparison, the stock handlebar to footpeg distance is 3/4 of an inch longer than on the Africa Twin. I was surprised when I measured it. My experience with the 500X has been very positive so far. It hits the design target right in the bullseye. Fantastic job Honda.

Great comment Ed. I was thinking today that I might rotate the bars to help with off road. Crazy I didn’t know that measurement was larger than the AT. I’m going to have to test ride the Africa Twin. Again, thanks for the comment.

We always have one along on our Africa Twins and he keeps up no problems , we all like riding it a lot and call it the half-rica twin . I think he is gonna rally it up a bit. I must admit my next bike will be smaller then the big crf1000 as use it more off road then expected , that may change after I get some highway tours on it . cant wait to try out the 500 after some rally parts go on , like that 21 front tire . great vids glad I found your channel . be safe

Great take on this bike , I own 1 as a noob after 30 years of not riding, and after 1.5 year of owning one was not sure about some shortcomings. I have tried 16T sprocket and went back to original 15-you are right on point there.after 600miles I have changed to 705s as well as a complete noob after 30 years couldn't put my finger on it but felt much more comfy in "all around " aspects of riding with this tires.and finally:thank you for confirming my fuel mileage, same mixed results:50-70-mpg .And one more thing , been watching many reviews on bikes -trying to find one for myself, and ALL of them should start like this: "I'm 6 ft tall and 185lbs"but sadly they are not.... .

Great review. I have the same bike in a 2019 model. I did the 16T sprocket change but went back to the original 15T. It's not just about top speed either, I just felt that the bike is happier in all situations and speeds with the 15T. Even fuel economy dropped with the 16T. I think the only slight criticism I would have is the low speed fueling, which makes it somewhat jerky. However that's an emissions issue I guess. Keep enjoying your rides!

I have the same bike. I highly recommend you look into Givi crash bars.they make a set protects the the engine, and forks. I've dropped mine once, I didn't have my kick stand down got off and slowly layed it down. Those bars saved me damaging my engine. Their not to expensive I got mine for around $250, super easy to install. Can be done by yourself, but an extra set of hands makes it that much easier.

I currently ride a Yamaha Super Tenere that I bought new in 2016 for $8888. It was a 2013 leftover, but still in the crate. I've put street tires on it, bc at 600lbs wet, it's a chore to do soft sand Jeep trails. The mpg has my interest since I average 45mpg on the Super T. I'd probably put street tires on the CB500X, and a top case for in town and SHORT trips including interstate travel. Very informative video, good job!

Good stuff brother, keep it up! Compared to the CB500X, the KTM 390 ADV and the Versay 300 you will have to run at much higher RPM range for the same output. The T700 is basically a big expensive dirt bike. It can do road work but won't be as comfortable as the CB500X. Think DRZ400S but bigger/heavier, more powerful with wider gear ratio. It's all about versatility and how you are going to use. What gives you the most options for your budget. I don't want a 500lb dirtbike, but don't want a 200 lb street bike.

My 2015 CB500X is probably my forever bike. Like you said, it's an awesome all around motorcycle. And there's not much out there that can temp me to replace it, and nothing is tempting when I consider the cost of "upgrading." BTW, I opted for installing a 39T sprocket on the rear because I do mostly highway riding. I mostly cruise at 70-85 mph, and haven't noticed the drop in power you mentioned up in that high range. Great review. The 2019 looks like a good update

You can also consider adding a custom spacer which will stiffen the suspension a bit. The stock spacer inside the front forks are plastic I believe. Adding a metal spacer of different lengths to test out which one works out better for your weight and usage may help you work around the softly sprung forks as set up from the factory. Shouldn't cost you a moon either.

One more point about gearing. If you plan on doing much off pavement riding at all there's really only decent choice in the stock 160/60 17 size. That's the Pirelli MT60. Great traction everywhere I rode it, including down to Baja but it's expensive and it wears out fast. I got 3400 miles out of mine and I believe that's above average. There are many more choices in 150/70 17. This size is slightly taller than stock which will effectively give you taller gearing as well. It's only about 3% but that's enough to drop 6000 rpm down to 5832 rpm. Just something extra to consider before swapping to a 16 tooth front sprocket, especially if you're heavier or ride hilly/mountainous terrain.

8:01 to 10:35 I already ordered the front 16 tooth sprocket with dampener. Main reason I want teh 16 tooth = lower rpm's at 60mph and thus ensuring my 78+ mpg I consistently get at the moment keeping the bike at 54 mph on the highway. With the 16t front sprocket, that I can easily keep it at 60mph with the same mpg consistently ( I keep tires as follows front/rear 42 to 45/39 to 43 psi when I know I'm keeping her on the pavement. I'll cut the pressure basically around half on both when I know I'm going offroad and especially on gravel. Hate gravel xD ) I Can't wait. I'll order a speedo corrector next. While I agree with the overall point you made about a lower top speed. For me, going only one tooth up in front won't make my personal max speed limits any closer as I prefer to keep my bike no faster than 70 to 75mph IF I care to ever go that fast. I'm comfy going 55 and 60mph. I'm loving that mpg too much.

Have you decided on a specific set of engine crash guards yet? I settled on the t-rex racing kit and overall they've done well. If you get that same kit, drop the bike and lose one of the " pucks" aka sliders...( there's one per side) also check to ensure you still have the metal 1 inch..ish long spacer/adapter and it's bolt. If not you'll need to specify to t-rex racing customer service that you need those two also if you need to order some replacement pucks.

i think you might have it backwards on the sprocket issue.. a larger front sprocket will give you more top end speed.. it will throw your speedo out almost -10mph at those speeds(70mph=80mph) but will increase it none the less..

Nope. This bike doesn’t have the HP to overcome that gear ratio when you add wind resistance. If the bike won’t hit top speed loaded with luggage, what’s it going to do with an even higher gear? It’s going to bog down.

Great review of the bike, you seem to have covered every angle. I had a test ride pre-lockdown comparing with an NC750x with DCT. The CBX was just so much more fun and that slipper clutch is so good. Plenty of low down pull and as you say very comfortable . The versatility is a major thing for me as I want to try out some trails as well as tour. The front suspension is a bit basic but I am riding a GS at the moment. I would consider the RR upgraded fork. Have you given any thought yet to engine bars? I like the RR one and bash plate and like that it’s not mounted to the engine. For me the bike ticks all the boxes as I’m looking to downsize and have a bike with less tech with that Honda reliability as you say. There were some major issues with the GS on the 10k service which were fortunately covered under warranty. The only decision for me is black or red😉 Seriously enjoying the channel, definitely a highlight of lockdown.👍🇬🇧

This detuning takes places by an insert into the velocity stacks, hence some of the British guys are buying north American velocity stacks online. Usually but not always cb500x's are listed as 49.6 HP in north American reviews. In Brazil they are always listed as 50.4 CV = 49.6 HP. Check it out, If I am wrong, you can wring out a bit more ponies real easy, but I do think you already have the 49.6.

Thank you. I would really like to get spoked wheels. Money money;).

I think that spending more than a few hundred on this bike may be waste. All the components are well matched to overall make it a great bike. Same idea as when you were talking about the front sprocket. If one starts spending 1000+ on upgrades you may as well get a different bike. Maybe the T7 from Yamaha?

It’s not too bad, but the aerodynamics in my helmet might help. My wife complained a lil about it on this trip.

after all those miles. do you wish from time to time that you had more power? its limited to 35KW. do you wish you had more?

Good question and the answer is no. It’s rare that I peg the throttle. It’s usually when I get on the freeway and by that time I’m already speeding. More power is definitely fun, but you gotta ask yourself how much do you really need it? I can go over 100 mph, wheelie, and keep up with sport bikes on the twisties. The power output is just fine.

Oregon Motorcycle so it’s true as they say, one rather be fast 💨 on a slow bike than slower on a fast 💨 rocket

I can see why you think the dashboard is alright. There is a big cellphone blocking it so you don't have to watch the gear and speed. hahaha

The 16T will increase your top speed and decrease your acceleration. Think about it.

Wrong. Your not taking aerodynamics and the fact this bike doesn’t even make 50hp into consideration. The bike is geared perfect from the factory. In fact, with luggage, you could increase your top speed with a 14t.

I’m sorry I couldn’t watch this edition. I was getting seasick by your constant movement when you were first in the car park. Awful technique. I hope I haven’t been forced to miss anything important.
