The important thing is the absence of harmful pesticides & herbicides, that’s #1 for most. The Mexico thing may sound sketchy because of different laws there, but it’s not. Canada keeps it simple and just says: pesticide-free or Glyphosate-free. Also Hydroponics and Urban Farming use far less water-useful thing during a drought.

WE ALL NEED to know what we're eating. Pass legislation now for better ingredient labels.

Like how much co2 it took to make and move the plant. Like chemical fertilizers pesticides and gets moved buy boat then truck add the co2 it took to move that item. If its living same thing but add its co2 from breathing and add methane too.

Even plants in the ground can only uptake minerals that are dissolved in water so effectively all produce is hydroponic.

vertical farming can save up to 90% of water

Exactly! Vertical indoor farming is fantastically more efficient.

Hydroponics and aquaponics also save 90% of water

Not necessarily, you can vertical farm in soil or soilless

the tech for vertical farming is unsustainable right now -- too much energy consumption

Of course soil matters, that is why I go to farmers markets. For the past 20 years I have eaten vegs and fruits seasonally, which greatly expands my menu and gives me a variety of nutrients and vitamins through a year.

Well, it's a new day; guess what? Many are not going to be growing much of anything in the soil when there is no water, a closed-loop system does not evaporate like an open field does.

Aquaponics is a pretty fun hobby. More so than hydroponics. Easier for me too...more people need to start gardens at home

Agreed. Happy growing.

The important factors for me in buying organics are: No pesticides or herbicides, Non-GMO and sustainably grown. If hydroponics or aquaponics demonstrates their plants are grown that way, I have no problems buying them.

Hydroponic 9 times out of 10 uses chemical fertilizers. I worked in a few and thats the norm chemicals no dirt and always has a alge problem.
@oldcountryman27953 жыл бұрын
These shyster “organic” farmers don’t want anyone cutting in on their good thing. All plants are organic. It’s a silly marketing term. Hydroponics is the future. Indoor farming is the future, and it saves massive amounts of water.

Do we have to always pit one over the other? I mean, our business is called Aquaponics AI, but we're not battling against hydroponics or organic regenerative farming (nor any of us should be). We should be battling (together) against regenerating the earth and liberating communities through aquaponics, hydroponics and regenerative soil farming. 🌱 🎈

Full belly farms is not an small farm they are over 1000 acres, they are part of the 1%, buy from your small grower!!!
@zaria57853 жыл бұрын
Many people don’t have access to those small farms because of distance. If another farm can deliver my CSA produce that was organically grown then I’ll support them. It doesn’t matter how big or small FBF is - what matters is their relationship to the ecosystem and ethical farming practices.

Hydroponic farms use chemicals to provide nutrients to the plants but aquaponics uses fish waste for nutrients. Now, the solids that are filtered out of the system are dumped somewhere so if the aquaponic farmer dumps the solid waste (fish fertilizer essentially) on to turned earth, are they now meeting the letter of the law if not the intent?

There’s nothing wrong with hydroponic if it’s grown with organic nutrients and stuff also indoor have more control and better quality that’s why there mad The start up Capital is more witch smaller farmers don’t have but Corporations to

If the taste of the food is just has good as soil , and nutrition value is the same seems like not to bad of an idea,and hopefully it's also more efficient
@scifiwasabbi003 жыл бұрын
Soil grown is going to be nutritionally superior because of trace minerals, bacteria and fungi that cannot be replicated in hydroponics. However, with the mega-drought we are facing hydroponics could be the water saving solution that we need. Why not just label each so the consumer can decide? Oh right, that would make too much sense.

There is also dual root zone where you can use soil and aquaponics together....sadly not many are adopting this method.
@oldcountryman27953 жыл бұрын
Actually, you are completely wrong. Everything the plant needs is in the water. In fact, even plants in the ground can only uptake minerals that are dissolved in water so effectively all plants are hydroponic.

Why not just label how it was organically grown. Let the consumer decide. If the labels specify the type of organic operation I see nothing wrong with that. Also, country of origin should continue to be labeled clearly.

Aquaponics and Hydroponics shouldn't be listed as ORGANIC. They should have their own classification. With all of the hell that Organic Growers have to go through just to receive that designation to have some Aquaponics or Hydroponics outfit run by Walmart or somebody else, it's totally unfair competition and it's not Scientifically proven that Aquaponics and Hydroponics are just as healthy as soil grown produce. I asked some professor about the Kratky method since it runs totally on water. Whether or not it has as much vitamins and minerals in the produce as soil grown. You know the answer I got? NONE! Fruits and vegetables can only get out of their growing medium what is already in there and I'm not certain that a bunch of fish poo and water, some added calcium and a few other things is going to provide everything that HUMANS need from their produce. I don't think it's been proven one way or the other.

You are lumpy aquaponics and hydroponics together. they aren't the same thing. Why didn't you interview a hydroponics farm? Why don't you go to one of these hydrofarms in mexico and see their operation? You need to ask about the water and nutrient waste when it comes to hydro. Do better KPIX
