I find that simple garlic water sprayed once per week works great. I make enough to let the remainder sit overnight to spray a second day and it seems to last for a week or two. 2 cloves blended with a little water and filtered for a spray bottle.

Removing all the lower branches at least one foot above ground. Thinning out the remaining branches and leaves to have good air circulation and 🌞 sun exposure. Feeding the plant well so is not in stress. A lot of pruning works for me.

My recipe is 1ltr water+ 10ml neem oil+ 5 ml liquid soap+2clove garlic crushed+ 2 hot chillies. If infestation is high, add some coffee powder and clove oil/ crushed cloves, strain and mix with above solution. Definitely works for white flies, aphids and mealybugs.

I use a mix of 5ml neem oil and 5ml liquid soap in 1 litre water. The soap washes off the protective coat on the aphids or white flies and the neem oil kills them. Of course, this is only when the ladybugs don't do the job sufficiently well. You may have to spray everyday or alternate days for about a week till the patch is totally free from these pests. Neem oil will not work on it's own, you need the soap along with it. The soap alone also is only a partial job, so please add the neem oil to it. Yes, the Bronners castile in this video has peppermint and other essential oils that do most of the job, but if you're in a place like where I live and don't get this castile soap, just use your simplest liquid soap and neem oil. Another thing that works pretty well is compost tea (or Panchagavyam) sprayed over the foliage. While making your compost tea, add a little Pseudomonas to the bucket. This actually improves the plant's resistance to aphids and other pests.

Just a note, but healthy plants have fewer (if any) problems with insects and disease. Whiteflies tend to attack stressed or otherwise undernourished and/or weak plants. If you are seeing this type of problem, the underlying cause may actually be more related to plant health than to the "symptom" of insect infestation. The quick fix is to take care of the symptom. The real solution is to FEED YOUR SOIL! If you have healthy soil, you WILL have healthy plants.

Thank you for your recommendations. I am Colombian but learned to eat spicy food from my Mexican students, who taught me how to cook and love jalapeños peppers. I now make my own salsa and learned to blend 2 jalapeno peppers and a head of garlic to make a great, natural spray to get rid of whiteflies. After jalapeños and garlic are blended, I pour mixture through sieve and use liquid in sprayer. I sprayed my hibiscus plant and it is doing much better now. I will give it a spray of jalapeños and garlic again until they are all gone.

I like your gardening videos very much for your sweet Indian accent, your use of organic methods for fertilising ( often from the kitchen ! Like banana skins rice , onions etc.) and your organic methods of eliminating pests like white flies. I will definitely try castile soap. So far I have been using a mix of rubbing alcohol, dishwashing soap and water. But I have to keep on spraying it almost daily or the infestation returns.

I live close central CA where whitefly seems to be a permanent issue here. I kept doing what you said, but it's extremely difficult. I need to change all my outdoor pads on a weekly basis. I need to spray them once or twice a week (Dr. Bronners, Neem oil and peppermint oil). Whenever the weather gets warmer, for 2+ days, if I don't spray and change the yellow pads, in 2-3 days I can see whiteflies all over my plants. It's disgusting.

When you spray the plant with water does this kill the bugs? it seems like they would just fly away & spread to other plants or fall to the ground & spread to other plants? I've always used a mixture of bit of dawn dishsoap with water in a spray bottle.. Ill try adding the neem oil next time.. Dawn also kills flees. Ive bathed my dogs with a bit of dawn & instantly kills the flees.

Thank you for your video! Won't the castile soap, as well as the other suggestions by commenters, interfere with the good bugs (like ladybugs, praying mantis) that eat the aphids? Hosing off, yellow tape, good pruning practices, and buying and releasing these good bugs might be a better way to go if you don't want to kill the good bugs. I hope you can give me some guidance on this. Thank you in advance.

It takes a bit of effort but yields a great byproduct. This method was given to me by a San Clemente Garden store just a bit off of Del Mar. Make a earthworm composter. He mentioned than then enzyme produced by the earthworms when applied to the plants gets taken up and systemically repels the whiteflies. Sure enough it works! Spectacularly. I grew a whole variety of plants in my deck and if you have any experience with whiteflies they attack everything including rosemary bushes. One I started using earthworm compost, my own fresh brewing, they became nonexistent. Even with with neighboring bushes growing only a three feet away covered all summer with them. Only once in a while a small population would take a foothold, but only rarely. Just double down on the earthworm compost and it was a done deal. Worked well small scale for a long time. Used an old cooler with holes drilled in it and worms gathered from the backyard

Take the earthworm compost, a very sticky dark sludge from the sides or bottom of the cooler ( as I used ) and spread it out about an inch or so thick around the plant. In my case inside the planting pot. At this point just water it in. Subsequent watering will get more in. Like I said earlier the enzyme in the compost will be taken up by the plant and provide the protection systemically as well as give you one of nature’s best fertilizers. My experience when I lived in Southern California eliminated whiteflies and left my plants untouchable after that. lGood luck.

Water alone works too in the very early stages of infection. But it has to be applied with something that creates very strong jets of water. Whiteflies are very fragile. The water washes eggs and larvae and pupas from the leaves to the ground, and damages adults and also washes them to the ground, where bacteria and other ground-bound critters take care of them. If you just mildly set your plants, no matter how thoroughly, it won't do any good indeed.

OMG the stickytraps! As I turned over the giant leaves of pervian groundcherry plants to check the progress of lacewing larvae hatching, and remove any harmful 3-lined potato beetles, I was amazed to see how many white flies would fly straight off the leaves and onto the paper. Great if your plants are in a state of crisis! I didn't leave the trap out over night, because common green lacewings fly around in the evening pollinating plants and laying their eggs. In my country, drought is a serious issue. By mid summer, it is illegal to use running water on plants, lawns r to wash cars. I think the yellow sticky traps would be a better recommendation. By the way, could u make a video giving suggestions on how to farm during extended drought? This would be really appreciated.

What i do suggest is during the rainy season do some water harvesting. If you have access to drums bottles kegs buckets. Try catching and storing those water to assist in tge dry season. I do have some simple irrigation methods on my channel that may also help. Feel free to check it out. I wish you well

I don't have a garden but have managed to Finally keep two poinsettias growing tall in a planter pot on my porch. They are beautiful and today I see a few whiteflies flying around, it's early no infestation yet. I'm SOOO Angry :-(... I'm going to try the wash down and sticky tape method as you suggested. I tried the wash down & dish soap another person stated he used...that didn't work for my plants last year. Thanks again.

just dust your plants with diatomaceous earth, the fumes rip tiny holes into the flys eventually killing them, and it is actually benefical for plants when applied to this soil, which can kill any ground critter.

Hi CG, thanks for your reply. Hey, do you have any tips for cucumbers and squash? I have done about everything I know to do and they're still getting rusty and brown, some brown spots. I have a container garden. I have put baking soda and soapy water on them. I applied a spray that I mixed up, it was a peppery spray that I got off of Noreen's Garden. I had to wash it off of my plants. It was pretty acidic. My cucumbers and squash seem to be afflicted in particular. Maybe it's those white flies spreading some funk? I don't think I have tried just plain baking soda and water yet. 1 table spoon to one gallon ratio. I have gotten a lot of tips of off the rusted garden. He's really good too. If you have any tips, I am all ears/eyes. Thanks ;-)

The soapy water with baking soda and an essential oil(neem) does work wonders if applied correctly and at the right time. I gal water.1tsp baking soda. 2-3 drops neem oil. 2-3 drops dish soap. Mix well and apply on plant makibg sure you hit tge under leaves. But first try it on a small portion of leaf to see if its too strong and dilute as necessary. Do not apply when the sun is too hot this might scorch your plants too. I wish you well

Hi! I have a questions about whitefly’s and the stress they can cause a plant…I currently have a Chinese Hibiscus that was pretty heavily infested. I did a heavy pruning on it mid March. Sense then, I can’t believe what I’m seeing, but all of the new growth on it is a completely different shape!! All of the old growth (old leaves) are in the classic tear drop shape. All of my new growth (new leaves) are the classic half circle on the bottom like normal but they have become tri-tipped!! Each leaf has three distinct tips on it!! It’s crazy…I’ve never seen anything like this. Have you? Could this be cause by the stress of the infestation I wonder? I’m still dealing with the infestation, however it’s not as bad as it was before the pruning. I’m fighting a loosing battle here…I have some 20 some plants that are infected…I’ve been waiting for the weather to turn so that I can get them outside and treated and then as the infestations clear up, I can bring them back inside…I’ve kind of just been trying to nurse them all through until then…I love having a sun room but man, so do the whitefly’s!!

Good info. We use the same methods as well. Sometimes use Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds along with some pure neem, but typically don't need to go to that extent. There is also a hose attachment that works very well for spraying off insects, but I forget what it is called.

California Gardening Thanks for the visit! We only offer what we use for our own gardening purposes, and have found to be the best available (in our opinion) for that market segment. As for Jackpots, they are the best quality fabric grow bags we have found. They cost a bit more than the consumer grade grow bags, but it is well worth the cost difference in my opinion (very heavy-duty nursery grade). We reuse the ones we have season after season, and they are still like new. We have a number of perennials in Jackpots that just keep going. Each year we expand our garden, but I don't add many raised beds any more because the Jackpots do so well, and they are much easier to manage than raised beds. Worm Gold Plus is the only commercially available worm castings I will use anymore. I have my own worm farm as well (every gardener should), but the WGP is hard to beat, plus I just can't make enough of my own worm castings to meet my needs without significantly expanding my worm farm. I have not found any other worm castings that are anywhere near as good as my own, except the WGP.

I had no idea what these things were called. They jump and they were all over a lot of the weeds and little trees growing in my back yard. I did some major weeding. They have been attacking my potato plant. I am hoping that by weeding I got rid of a lot of the problem. I spayed them with a peppery spray from Noreen's Garden, they did not like that! Any ways, I have been looking for natural/organic ways to kill insects. Thanks for the video. One last thing, does the soapy spray effect the soil at all? The sticky tape is an excellent idea too.

You mentioned they carry diseases. I'll strip my collard green tree bare if this is unacceptable. I have a bucket of them soaking in green Palmolive right now. I just has the exterminator company come out this week and it's like the little buggers got mad and multiplied. I've even used diatomaceous earth and cayenne pepper, garlic water--nothing. Thanks!

Water didn't work. Someone gave me a recipe of soap, water, cayenne pepper, garlic, and onion. They said it works great on white flies. I sprayed my plants, and they all turned brown and the leaves fell off. Now I'm resurrecting my babies. Of course, the white flies are happy and healthy, and for some reason are more productive than ever. I'm going to buy both the soap and the yellow sticky pads. As soon as you said Dr. Bronner's, I gave you a thumbs up, because there really is no better soap brand I have ever come across.
