I believe this concept was designed by Lynne Black Jr. He said he actually used a fishing vest before headquarters called him about it.

Fantastic! A replica company would make tons producing modern versions of the traditional canvas.

Hey Chris! I was at FOB II '69-'70. 1-3 for RT Iowa, 1-2 and 1-0 for RT Vermont and RT Colorado. We sometime used AK magazine vests also. Glad to be alive... Lee Burkins author of Soldier's Heart: An Inquiry of War

Hey sir I just wanted to ask you about the STABO harness connected to the Alice gear . Did you guys rig the ALICE belt to the harness or did it come with it?
@chrishughes24x7
@chrishughes24x7 3 жыл бұрын
@@romelohdz Thanks for watching! ALICE field gear came out after The Vietnam War. STABO's were made from nylon strap by parachute riggers on Singer class 7 "thumper" sewing machines. They had slits to slide a web pistol belt though. I have a Vietnam era STABO in my collection I'll dig out and shoot a video of at some point.

Indeed. One of the rarer SOG pieces because they were only used for a specific period of time and only by CCN (Command & Control North), whereas STABOs, SOG knives, 1-0 Jackets, CISO boonies, etc were used across SOG. All SOG pieces are scarce considering how items exist today versus the demand for them.

I walked into a local pawn shop and was talking to the owner about some of the knives he had in his shop. After talking for a while he realized I was really into knives and he said Hang on a second, I've got something I think you'll appreciate. He brought out a legit sterile sog knife in the sheath with a letter from his dad who had given it to him about how he acquired it in Vietnam in 1968 from a special forces ranger in a trade for a buck folding knife and 10.00. It gave me chills to read the letter and hold that piece of history in my hands.

@@chrishughes24x7 speaking of knives... I bought a Kabar at Killeen TX in 1974 that had a 6" blade, narrower than an issue Kabar, with paka wood handle and a rounded end cap. My C.O. mentioned that these knives were made for the Laotian fighters. After we got out of Laos, Kabar put them out commercially. I've seen one example in a Kabar display case, in 1981 or so. I can find no info ( Kabar website,etc ). Were these sterile knives, or what?

"One-Zero" is about as impressive a job title in SOG as you can get. Those few to attain that level of experience and trust were the very tip of the spear. I'd guess he was out of Kontum, FOB2, since most of the spike teams there had names of states. I think Phu Bai, FOB1, had snake names. Almost any of the gear I had is with Bruce at norbay.com. It's Bruce's business. His dad was SF and SOG.

Agreed. MACV-SOG was comprised of some the bravest men to walk this earth. The "One-Zero" is the pinnacle of leadership and courage. It's an honor to own this vest and share it here.

@@chrishughes24x7 the only reason I ask is because somebody reached out that had my grandfathers Purple Heart, CIB, and jump wings with a star from WW2. @@WickedPissa85 I completely understand your position and no offense is taken. I've dealt with family members who feel I should give them an item because they were related to the veteran. When I offer to sell it to them for what I paid (not factoring appreciation), they've acted poorly. Imagine this scenario... I am the great grandson of Pablo Piccaso and I walk into a gallery and demand the owner gives me their Picasso painting. After consideration, they offer to sell the painting to me for what they have into it, but instead I call them a crook and harass them until I eventually find someone else to bother...

Are you sure it's cat dyed canvas specific or is it an old shelter half? Those were commonly used in Vietnamese tailor shops as well

Canvas shelter halves are 10.10oz vat dyed canvas. This vest is heavier weight (14-18oz) VAT and a slubbier weave.
