This is a tutorial on how to upgrade your original (fat) Xbox 360's hard drive with a 320gb (slim) drive WORKS WITH THE 500gb SLIM DRIVE ALSO :D. (This tutorial will work with any slim to original conversion) Tools needed: T6 Torx driver, T10 Torx driver, small flathead screw driver.
Also needed: a new Xbox 360 hard drive transfer cable (old and new combo)

It works great. Thanks for the video. Since the new update you can copy your files to the cloud and skip the transfer cable part. It made things a lot easier but took longer.

If you lose the tiny spring (like I did) a spring from a pen works wells. You just need to cut it to fit the size.

yes, since it is just a simple SATA 2.5 inch laptop drive. You could technically use a cloning software such as Norton Ghost to literally identically recreate that drive, including each partition, byte to byte. I use a physical cloner box which you can insert drive A (source) and drive b (destination) and clone entire drive. After its done if you cloned a 12gb hard drive to a 320gb hard drive you will need to plug it into windows 7 and stretch the data partition but it would work perfectly.

Actually the transfer cable is basically a USB to SATA, I've used the cable to use my old drive as an external on my PC, very handy

All you really need is the hard drive adapter cable for the original 360 and you can keep the slim one in the same case

Mine was from a knock off drive I had bought in late 2009 from ebay right after the 250GB MW2 LTD ED came out (about 6 months before you could buy an official 250GB HDD separately) but, most people get it from DealExtreme, you can also get it from Amazon.

That is because game installs are linked to a specific Xbox, if you installed them on 1 they won't play on another. installed games check to see if the game is inserted then spins down, so if the area it checks isn't scratched it sees it as a legit game and plays off the HDD, but since it's scratched now to reinstall it to your new Xbox you need to get a new copy because it installs the whole game disc

the warranty on the new drive (which I'm sure you're referring to) only is 90 days, and the second it's open the warranty is void, but as long as you're careful, the warranty isn't needed, and it will work

If it's fixed, it would act the same, if you're worried about the drive pulling more power and making the 360 run hotter, don't worry because I'm pretty sure the official slim 360 drives consume less power, and in return run cooler.

That is correct Wolfwood428, Reginald Phielix, it has to be formatted specially for the Xbox 360, for it to see it and it to work... You can use an official drive or a drive formatted with HDDHackr... oh, and you can only use a max of 320gb right now, and only certain drives work (I think), you can find it on google which models will work.

Well 4 fans will do that! lol The XCM Core Cooler v2, was designed to cool, not be quiet eventhough the tired to make it as quiet as possible, it really needs holes above it and, I just never really saw the point to let more dust into the system

If you are J-Tagged or RGHed you can, if you aren't or don't even know what that means then you can't because that means you're not. 360's have a set partition size, it isn't like a PS3, because Micro$oft wants to try to bleed you dry, by making you buy their official drive. You could install it, and flash it to make the 360 think it is official I think, but it would only show up as the biggest size available at the time, which still is 320gb

You can, but it won't work unless you're RGHed or J-Tagged, it's "not why not just install it?" because it's physically possible to do, it's "what Micro$oft will let me use on my 360?" which is an official or HDDHackr flashed 320gb or smaller drive. Micro$oft locks the 360 to 320gb currently, its not like a PS3, but maybe in the future Micro$oft will unlock it or move the lock up to 500 gb or 1 tb

I'm not following your question very well? If you mean what is explained in the video, it's explained in the video? If you mean how to transfer a fat 360's drive data to a slim 360, it's as easy as using the other adapter on the transfer cable

You can just take the cable out of the original drive case then if you want to do that then you can transfer the drive back and forth

Thanks for the video. After viewing this, I knew what to expect. But just realized, why disassemble the Xbox 360 S hard drive, you can just remove the connector and use it as an adapter.

Yep, it'll work... and yep I'm the first.... it came to me in a dream.... not really, but I knew they upgraded the software across the 360 line to accept 320gb and I had noticed that people were making HDDHackr 320s in the original case and selling them on eBay and ding a light went off... "It should work" and it did!

I purchased a ready made 320gb for the older fat 360s from China, just let let people know the "fake" drives are no longer as cheap as normal due to Westurn Digital factory getting flooded. I paid £40 for my drive from China!

Do to the way you worded this question, I'm not really sure what you are asking, but I assume you're asking if it is needed? Yes, it is needed to be successful (unless you have an old cable and another "fat" case to use it in), also it will have the fat Xbox connector on it too, so you can use it for the old drive case type too

@m0dm0use yep and also remember that if you have 360 compatible original xbox games you can't play them on a Chinese drive 99% of the time because of the lack of the emulation "ghost" partition. That's why I reccomend the official drive.

try searching "xbox 360 transfer cable slim" on ebay... if it has the sata tip, youre gold... also theyre at Game Stop for like $20

I have TWO old style hard drives. One sitting empty after I transferred everything to my 120GB drive. I have the old style transfer cable as well. I guess I can use my empty 20GB casing to house the 320GB drive and just transfer with my available transfer cable like I did before. Thanks for the video. I just needed to know that a dis-assembly of the newer 320's was possible to make it work in the old style casing.

Yeah I looked all over and kept getting the same result... I thought "My Jasper 360s work great, why would I want to upgrade to a slim that doesn't seem as reliable just to use a 320?"

@MrTankyDan No, It's an official Micro$oft drive, it's not modified, Micro$oft can't tell the difference... even with the China drives, they're not detectable

It has to be a specific drive, spoofed (custom flashed) to make the 360 think it is an official drive I believe, I've never flashed a HDD, although I have spoofed some disc drives in my time. And with the flash drive problem, the 360 will format it over to its special file format which isn't PC compatible, how ever you can custom format (choose the format size) it on the 360, if you still want to use it on your, PC, It would be like having a smaller flash drive

To open the case from the fat Xbox a t6 driver is needed and slim Xbox drive like a 250gb drive to replace or the 320gb.

You might, it wouldn't hurt to try I don't think? but I don't think you can, It's the way the drive is specially formatted plus I believe it has a special low level file needed to tell the xbox how big the drive is.

nope, unless you're running a j-tagged 360.... Microsoft checks to see if the drive is formatted correctly and you can only use up to 320gb right now. You can flash a 500 to a 320, but then it's a 320gb in the eyes of the xbox

Any 2.5 hdd will work as long as its formated for xbox 360

I heard that it'll be in the "720" but it's so late in the game for the 360 I doubt they'll be a 500gb for the 360

I'm assumig you are talking about the slim 360 drive? About any major store like GameStop, WalMart, Target, etc...

@themarcrobertson An official 360 drive is formatted the same weither it's a fat or slim drive... it'll work in either one and have the Xbox 1 partition. Now if it is a Chinese drive, you can create the partition wth the HDDHackr, but it's a pain in my opinion and not really worth it.

The problem with that is that is that no 1TB 360s exist so you'd be caught and banned reasonably quick. Best to go with 20,60,120,250,320 or 500GB configurations to stay safe.

well you can use a 1tb, but you have to flash it with a "official" 360 profile so the 360 can read it, the biggest is a 500gb profile so you would only be able to use 500gb of the 1tb the only way to use 1 tb is in a jtag, and of course that isn't allowed on live

As long as it is a factory slim drive yes if it’s an aftermarket drive, you’ve still got to modify the drive itself to be properly formatted

you are, but even if you weren't it wouldn't void your xbox warranty, as long as you haven't opened it... you're opening the HDD which has nothing to do with the Console's warranty

@HrutkayMods: so my project for the day was to open up a defunct phat enclosure and pull the adapter/plug. I also purchased a new xbox 500gb slim HDD. I then used that adapter plug to connect the new 500gb slim HDD (with the slim case intact) directly to the original xbox without using the phat enclosure case. Everything works fine. I used the transfer cable to transfer everything on my old HDD to the new one. Saves the step of opening the slim HDD case.

can we use another sata drive as Laptop HDD?? and ı have 60gb HDD when ı try to transfer from my flash... first of all i formatted flash on xbox... and then when ı unplugged flash and ı checked after format on my pc.. ı saw there is no space... 16 GB capacity 15.3 used.. how is possible. it was empty..when i check inside of usb flash there is a folder name xbox ( I think system files) what is the situation?

if your hard drive is on an original xbox chances are good it is out of warranty to begin with.

I should have kept my slim hard drive I got the other year for xmas and just used the cable from one of my 20gb drives to hook it up, but wasnt thinking and just took it back for the money and found a 120gb for the normal one for cheap, I dont even remember if the slim drive I got was 250 or 320

I recommend the real original one and not the fake chinese one, becuse they tend to burn out and stop working. You can get them from Gamestop for around $20. The original version comes in grey.... that won't work for this unless you have an extra original Hdd case laying around. So you'll want to buy the new version which comes in black. Still you can get the chinese on on ebay cheap, but'll only probably work once. Just search "xbox 360 hdd transfer" in ebay and look for the black one.

Hello, thank you sooo much for this video. It worked like a charm. Please let me ask you one question: Although my fat xbox recognizes the new original hard drive, I'm finding very dificult to connect the hard drive to the xbox. It seems that after modification, the smal SATA connector located under the hard drive moved a little bit up so every time I need to connect the hard drive to my xbox, I need to manually push it a little bit down so it can connect. Definitely, I'm not able to connect as smooth as you connect your hard drive in your video. Do you have any tips for me ?

Honestly that part was re-filmed a few times so it looked good lol, I had the same problem with the case on mine (since it's a chinese knockoff case), I just slap it down with a bit of force and it usually clips, but you can always reopen the case and reposition the connector, that may work...

That’s not a cheap Chinese drive it’s a western digital drive which is a good manufacturer in fact the hitatchi drive you replaced it with is a cheaper hdd in general it just has a bigger disc platter in

7:29 i work at a computer shop and to me personally that drive look legit i dont know why a Chinese company would go to all that effort to make it look realistic i mean they are not that expensive anyways like today i can but a 1tb HDD for £45 so i mean it was probably the same back then for a 320gb or 500gb its never worth buying cheap knockoff drives for any application even for consoles.
