What is this thing?? In a recent video, I built this 1:32 scale Orlandoo Hunter trophy truck (OH32X02). I installed some Mini-Z drift wheels here. They look too small for the truck. My friend Chris said "someone stole your wheels and replaced them with donuts spares lol." Orlandoo Hunter doesn't use the Mini-Z AWD style rim mounting system but it's similar.
I noticed that the truck got a decent steering angle, so perhaps it can do some RWD drifting? Let's run on these drift tires and find out. These are DS Racing LF-5 drift tires, narrow for all four wheels. Gyro is the built-in one in Radiolink R4FGM receiver. It's okay but not designed for RWD drifting.
Okay wow, it kind of drifts! Because the truck lacks the nearly 90-degree of steering like a dedicated RWD drift chassis, it's unable to counter steer the very aggressive drifts. This means in order to drift the truck without spinning out, I can't allow it to go too side way. Fortunately, there's certainly enough wheel speed generated by the 2S brushed system. But I'm sure this will drift better with a better dedicated gyro, and further improved with a straight axle rather than gear diff. But not bad at all for a tiny 1:32 truck not designed to drift.
(Hi Loki! You haven't shown up in a video for a while!)
Let's see some 25% slow motion footage.
Keep in mind that this truck is RWD. Had it been an AWD, it would be able to slide around much more easily. A RWD chassis maintains a controlled drift by breaking rear traction with wheel speed while keeping the front wheels pointed in the direction of travel. In practice, for an RC car to maintain the steering direction, it relies on a gyro to make rapid and minute corrections. The principles are the same for this truck, except it's unable to counter steer severe side way drifts. As a result, it will spin out easily.
So this is definitely not a replacement for dedicated RWD drift chassis like your DriftArt, GLD, DRZ, MA D32, etc. But despite the limitations, the Orlandoo Hunter truck is certainly a more capable RWD drifter than an MR-03. With some finesse, it can pull off figure "8" drifts. It can drift in circles quite reliably, for example.
I wonder if it's possible to modify the truck to create more steering angles. At the moment, at steering lock the knuckle hits one of the shocks. I don't think I will try this but it might be possible.
Here's some bonus content. Since I got the Mini-Z rims on already, let's try to run the truck with Mini-Z tires too. I have Kyosho 30-deg low profile slick front, and 40-deg radial wide in the rear. These tires create more traction on this surface compared to the stock Orlandoo Hunter tires. Also because the tires are solid rubber rather than hollow tires filled with foam, the truck drives extremely responsively. That said, the top speed of the truck is not that fast. The smaller diameter of the wheels basically gears down the truck.
Recall, this is what the stock tires look like. The top speed is noticeably faster. I think this is a good speed for indoor play with furnitures around.
This is Sammy and thanks for watching!
