An orphaned sea otter pup was being cared for Monday at Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, AK, according to a press release from the agency.
Workers from the facility were on an off-duty fishing trip on Sept. 9, 2023, off Homer, AK, when they noticed a pod of orcas attacking the newborn pup and its mom, who did not survive the attack, according to the press release.
The workers were able to recover the badly injured otter pup after the orcas had left the area, then helped take the injured mammal to the Center where workers were caring for it around the clock. That's because otter pups receive constant care from their mothers for the first six months of life, according to the press release.
