Orson's unfinished work is more interesting than many people's finished work :)

thanks much for uploading this. Welles: the master of drama and theater. the "grand illusionist". the tale-teller. the man who lived on the Edge. ... the artist in fury & in fire.

Amazing! that after over 3 years uploaded: less than 3000 views ! ... what a commentary on our day. Welles was surely one of the most talented and fascinating men of the 20th Century. in many ways he was almost Shakespearean ! Falstaff more than Hamlet.

OTHER admirer of Conrad’s work was the late great Orson Welles - the director, actor and producer who some claim went downhill after making the amazing Citizen Kane Throughout his life Welles worked on a number of projects, which, mostly from his lack of money and need to travel, were either destroyed or never completed. Was Orson Welles a burnt out genius or a casualty of the money mandarins that rule the film world? In Tx (BBC2 tonight 7.40pm) the legend comes under the spotlight. His long term companion and keeper of the Welles’ archive, Oja Kodar, suggests it was a combination of things, including the fact that Welles was a perfectionist, that he got more pleasure in the making of a work than seeing it. Director Vassili Silovic was granted exclusive access to Kodar’s archives - and includes clips and fragments from most of Welles productions, including fragments from The Deep. Based upon the same novel that was used for Dead Calm, which was commended as a minor masterpiece a few years back, it was to have starred Welles alongside Jeanne Moreau and Lawrence Harvey. Everyone knows about the Magnificent Ambersons being cut to shreds, They are unlikely to have seen scenes from his Merchant of Venice, the unfinished The Other Side of the Wind with John Huston and Jack Nicholson. This latter film includes a sex-scene in a car that outdoes anything that might offend in David Cronenberg’s much abused Crash. - perhaps, the scenes that are left were those left after the censor had been at it. Shots of the never-broadcast Orson Welles Show, which included Burt Reynolds and the Muppetts as guests are screened along with Welles reading passages from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Three Orson Welles’ films accompany the documentary - Journey Into Fear (12.30pm), Citizen Kane (1.40pm) and the hacked about version of The Magnificent Ambersons (3.35pm)

Was the home in Hollywood that Kodar was in, was that Welles home in Hollywood. If so, what a home.

+elnick1000 For an independent filmmaker Orson & Oja certainlytraveled around. How did they afford this lifestyle? Orson was aliving legend. Shafted by Hollywood! Shame really!
