I was also roman catholic though not a devout practitioner. When God put a Hermit Monk in my path who had almost passed out due to illness at my local grocery store. At first I thought he was a pharisee priest until I saw the cross, When I brought him to his home I went into the chapel and was hit with a sense of reverence when I saw the iconography and then when he started chanting I thought I was in heaven. I studied for six months and was baptised in the true church through rocor. May God bless you and travel to orthodoxy. Welcome brother.

@@Melons-vg8dqThe Papal Communion (RCC) has 23 sui iuris churches, not rites. There are 7 liturgical rites that each of these churches fit into. RCs always mix that up. There was no Papacy in the first millennium. The title of Pope was used for the Bishop of Rome alone starting in the 11th century, after its schism. Rome is not above having her lampstand removed as St. Paul himself warned. And Rome did have her lampstand removed almost a millennium ago. It temporarily had it removed at the time of the 2nd Ecumenical Council which was held and accepted for the whole (katholiki) Church without Rome in communion. The Bishop of Rome had the power to tie break and call local synods only, primacy of honor having been the Seat of the Emperor too once; the original Seat of St. Peter was Antioch, Alexandria and Rome together though. Ecumenical Councils were always called by the Emperor of the Ecumene. That is part of why no one has honestly had an Ecumenical Council since the end of the Roman Empire, even if the label is slapped on a synod. So, no, we are not disobeying Christ by having pruned a dying limb off of the tree of the Church. The Byzantine Rite of the Papal Communion is not the same as the Orthodox Church. It (the RCC) has lost its Succession, for one. Many churches of the Byzantine Rite are Latinized, meaning they have Roman Catholic elements in them. The Byzantine Rite is not aesthetic, it's a whole theology, a while Faith, a whole lifestyle in Christ. Rome treats Rites like one might treat wallpaper and curtains, aesthetic only. That's why Rome has several different theological traditions that often conflict and contradict, because of this milquetoast belief in anything goes as long as one is in communion with the Pope. It is better to go to the Church (Orthodox Catholic Church) that has one Faith, one baptism, one Lord of all.

As a protestant, if you are like most, one of the biggest problems is that you’ve never been taught the history of the church and you have not read the church fathers. Am I correct? If so, you may want to start there. In particular, for example, in order to understand what happened leading up to the “great schism” in the 11th century, you need to read about the eighth ecumenical council. We’ve done several live streams - and there are excerpts here - on this topic.

How do you find a trusted living guide? We have several Orthodox Churches here in Wichita ks. Are all Orthodox Churches to be trusted? How do we know which to trust and which to not especially if we are new to Eastern Orthodoxy? :edit: when you said that the apostles had to shed their paganism I really felt that. I’m coming to the Orthodox Church after 25 years of practicing paganism and occultism and even though I have experienced moments of coming back to church(not Orthodoxy but Protestant)I never did shed my paganism. I refused to get rid of my books, tarot cards, and things related to the occult. But yesterday, without feeling any regret, got rid of 25 years worth of paganism. I’m sure I have a long ways to go because the ideas that I have adopted over those 25 years don’t just disappear. I’ll be working on shedding them as well. This Sunday will be my first time at an Eastern Orthodox Church in like 18 years. I hope the one I picked is a good one. This is exciting and scaring at the same time but I’m looking forward to getting to know Christ more and more.

Man, there aren't "many Orthodox churhes". There's only one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church which is orthodox (= true). Just because that Church allowed autonomy and many nations got authocephalous part of Church to be named after them - that doesn't mean that we do not have unity and that doctrines are different.

@@wyattevans4335 well. I fell completely off. The church is incredibly divided and I struggled to find balance and eventually decided not to go. However, I am not having a correspondence with my old priest on areas I have questions. We are just emailing and I’m not actively practicing. I do miss it but I don’t miss the dogmatism. Kind of strange that I don’t like dogmatic views and I’m wanting to be Christian. I’m one of those…..liberals. Like I don’t think people go to hell, for anything. Not in the typical sense one thinks about hell. I don’t think God hates the gays and idk how I really think about and of God. Not a man in the sky that’s for sure. Was Mary a Virgin when she gave birth to Jesus? Probably not. Should women be allowed in ministry? I think so and it would seem so did Jesus considering the women who followed him who also taught. Is the church always right? Is the Bible infallible? What about all the rest of the people in the planet who practice other religions? I love Jesus. I love what he teaches. It’s the rest I’m not so sure about. I’d like to stay out of the extremes on either side and find balance. So I guess I can say yes I found a trusted guide and that is the priest of the church I used to follow. He is neither liberal no conservative and he really thinks about things instead of just doing what he’s told. I appreciate his openness to my questions no matter how crazy they sound. I highly recommend finding someone you feel you can ask any question at all and not worry about their judgment.

Thank you for this. Fr Peers answered my question 2:38:00 in, which to be honest was not really in line with the nature of the program, but was something I’d noticed reading earlier and wondered about. I asked about Christ warning about the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, and how or whether this referred to the heretical offshoots of Orthodoxy. It says the disciples understood him to be warning of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees. I was wondering whether this encompassed the future great schism within the Church - that this corruption into heresy was to be a manifestation of this leaven or doctrine of the Pharisees. Obviously again, not really in sync with the focus of the program!

I grew up in an atheist family. Both my parents are baptized (Catholics I guess) but they didn't love the Lord, so I myself didn't really believe in Him and rejected any religion. In highshool (here called Lycée), I met this girl. She was with a guy but that wasn't going all so well. In the summer of 2021 they parted ways so we got closer. Kissing, having sex was pretty casual with her. I still consider myself a virgin because we didn't do the whole act, even tho I know I have committed the sin. After some months, the relation was breaking down and we stopped seeing each other even tho we were still in the same school. One day, I can't remember when, I literally stopped giving all my attention to her and I couldn't talk to her anymore. I believe that God sent me an angel to break me free from this girl but I didn't realize it at the moment so maybe it's just something that I made up. At that time I was listening to Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West, 2 artists that brought me just a tiny touch closer to the Holy Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. To this day, I have never attended a church except some times with my grand-mother but it was only Catholic Churches as they are common here in France. My point here is that since we parted ways with that girl I feel like that I've gotten closer and closer to God. First, by leaving that girl behind which was leading me to commit very serious sins and secondly by listening to music that got me closer to God. I was kind of like a Protestant even tho I didn't even know what that meant. I am not an Orthodox yet but I feel closer and closer to the Truth. Protestantism is close to the Truth but Orthodoxy is the Truth. God bless all Orthodox around the world and especially your channel. ☦

I'm curious to hear Fr. Heers speak on St. Francis of Assisi. Him in particular and other Saints is part of why I'd have trouble leaving the West. Among a few other things. But I love both Eastern and Western Christianity. This is something I sometimes really struggle with.
@LadyMaria
@LadyMaria Жыл бұрын
I think he touched on them somewhere, or maybe it was another Orthodox KZfaqr. But the short of it is that Francis of Assisi was in prelest/plani (spiritual delusion), sadly. There was much pride in him, saying that there wasn't a sin that he hadn't repented from. That's presumption. The whole stigmata thing raises red flags too. RC "Saints" like Mary Margaret Alacoque were in deep prelest, maybe demonic oppression. Did you know that she claimed that Christ wanted her to consume feces of a sick person and she did? She is the creator of the sacred heart devotion. She claimed that Christ cut her heart out and replaced it with His own and He took hers, and she worshiped His physical heart. The sacred heart devotion is based on that. She cut His name into her chest and when it healed she burnt it into her chest. There are others, Catherine of Sienna, another example, she claimed to be married to Christ and had a ring made of "His foreskin" on her finger. Padre Pio, another, had stigmata and high fevers from it, meaning infection. So it probably was self-performed. There are others but these are good examples.

After a sufficient time - a few months - and you are ready to become an inquirer, contact a few priests or monasteries who you trust, hold in high regard as their seriousness and faithfulness to the Holy Tradition, as to what would be necessary and how to go about the catechumenate, etc. 4. Then go and begin the catechumenate at a local parish

I want to eagerly convert to God's true church - the Eastern Orthodox Church! Is my Catholic baptism valid? What are the steps very briefly?
@LadyMaria
@LadyMaria Жыл бұрын
Laywoman here. It's not valid, no, as there are no Holy Mysteries outside of the Church. In some jurisdictions they might evoke economia so that you are Chrismated instead of baptized, however the Chrismation fills in the grace lacking in heterodox "baptism". That said, it's always best to be baptized into the Church as RCs typically do not triple immerse and thus do not even have the form of baptism. There are videos on this channel on this topic. You can ask your Priest about the steps. If he refuses you baptism because of his Bishop, then you can seek a corrective baptism at a later date, if desired. May God bless you! ☦ 🌹

I have discussed toll houses with a priest I know and his conclusion is that the imagery involved with it is metaphorical. Yes, the particular judgement is a real thing, but eschatology and the happenings to the soul after death are a mystery that can be explained with many different ideas with validity - just like how Christ employs many different pieces of imagery to describe the Kingdom of Heaven, and how the atonement and resurrection can comprise many different ideas that are not mutually exclusive. I am not sure if purgatory has the same metaphorical components in Roman Catholic tradition. Of course, those who are super dogmatic about the toll houses beyond their being a metaphor are, amusingly, ones who vociferously criticize purgatory.

When we ask the theotokos to save us, how does she do that? And how is that different from Jesus saving us? Also, why do we call her Queen of Heaven & Co-Redemptorist?
@OrthodoxEthos
@OrthodoxEthos Жыл бұрын
1. We do NOT call her "Co-Redemptorist." That is an error and it must be rejected. The ORTHODOX CHURCH has never nor will ever adopt that language. 2. Salvation is used in different ways depending on the context: a. salvation from sin and death = salvation for eternity/eternal salvation b. salvation from temporal problems and from falling into sin The Theotokos has saved the people of God many times - historical events are commemorated throughout the year - by her intercessions. These were in the sense of the #2. This is what is meant most times. The Theotokos also saves us in the sense that without her "YES" we would not have had the Incarnation. Without her faithfulness... the human race is lost. So, her SYNERGY -- working together with GOD -- is a key aspect of our salvation. It is TAKEN FOR GRANTED that ONLY CHRIST saves us -- and indeed the Theotokos Herself -- in the sense of uniting us to Himself/ communion eternally.

God became man and took upon himself human flesh so we can depict Christ in the human flesh in which God made Him manifest. The Church in its Seventh Ecumenical Council declared that whoever rejects the veneration of icons rejects Christ’s incarnation and cannot be a Christian. The saints are those who lived lives filled with the Holy Spirit, who lived fully according to the gospel and whose lives were often characterized by great self-sacrifice, constant prayer, love for others, and many miracles. The Church throughout time has proclaimed and honored the saints of every age to show that in every time and place there have been those able to live out the gospel and shine forth with the fruits of the Holy Spirit just as in the time of the Apostles. We do not venerate the saints in place of Christ but we honor Christ in the saints and glorify those who glorified Christ through their lives.

The Orthodox Church has the same New Testament books as the Catholics and Protestants. However, the Protestants removed several books that were part of the Old Testament that was read by the early Church. Consequently, the Old Testament used by the Orthodox Church has several books that the Protestant Bibles don’t have. The Saints did not want to be venerated while they were on earth, because they all considered themselves to be poor sinners and too much human praise could lead them to pride and deprive them of the grace of the Holy Spirit. Those whom God has revealed to be saints after their repose, the Church then honors and glorifies since their whole life could be examined and honoring them could no longer lead them to fall into pride.

Respectfully, “35.000 denominations” is a terrible straw man. Not an argument as there are many groups but most would consider each other as united on the essentials. There is no real division etc, most consider each other as brothers and sisters as long as someone confesses Christ. You clearly, again respectfully, do not understand the historic Protestant tradition or how we approach things.
@pah9730
@pah9730 Жыл бұрын
@Joseph I understand that. But that’s not the historic Church. That’s not the Body of Christ that Paul speaks of. They have everything in common. They commune of the same cup. Theology and experience are united. Even five - let alone 35000 - denominations is not reflective of the unity of the church. So, I understand Protestantism. I was a Protestant for the first 21 years of my life. My father was an episcopal priest for 28 years. What we experienced there was not the body of Christ. Was not the Church. Was not what was given by Christ to the apostles.

Clearly not what Paul is talking about in terms of “unity”. Naturally the EO will claim apostolic tradition etc but it’s nonsense. Check out the content of “The Other Paul”, he works through all of the typical EO and RC arguments, none of them are the actual ancient faith preserved.

@@josephjolapa4250 Neither you nor “the other Paul” is an authority, but the Saints and indeed our Lord Himself, who is NOT A LIAR - as your comments seem to imply. For our Lord said He would be with us until the end, He would guide us in all Truth, that the gates of hades would not overcome the Church and much, much more found in the writings of the God-bearing Fathers through which our Lord SPOKE and SPEAKS. You can’t have sat at the feet of the saints and holy elders to come to your conclusions. Therefore, you speak in ignorance and your words are not trustworthy. Turn to the Saints TODAY and of the past few hundred years and become their disciple and become illumined. THIS is the only way to be connected to the ancient Church and Fathers and indeed to the Apostles and our Lord Himself - by being a disciple of those Disciples which Christ Himself teaches and taught.

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a denomination that mirrors the first 200 years of the true church. To much has been added along the way once the deciples of the apostles passed away. Stip orthodoxy of ALL the traditions added after ad 200 and then we will have what Christ intended for us as the church. There may be many people in heaven but there will be zero denominations there.
