6:24 One thing I would add, instead of merging layers together, you can create a folder to put your layers in. You then can change folder's opacity or apply a mask, but you still have the abilty to adjust the layers within the folder.

The last couple of years the blurred layers technique has been 'out of favor'. I used it quite a bit years back, mostly with some of my fine art still life images. Somehow my prints looked too literal, too sharp. Using just a bit of a blurred, partially transparent layer gave the just the right bit of 'glow' and softened back that extreme sharpness. Yesterday I was printing a fall orchard scene with leaves turning yellow and brown. I decided to give the technique a try again and was very pleased with the look. It's subtle, leaving transparency at about 20% but it definitely adds something. Sometimes we want sharpness in an image and sometimes we need a different emotional effect.

So that's how you do it! Always thought that soft look you've got to your style was negative clarity. Great tutorial man!

I had a feeling you had done this before - and I was right. One of your first videos was on this same topic but I think this video explained it really well and how it affects the image. Nice going Roman 👊

Luminar 4 has a "built in" Orton effect filter (actually a couple of variations of it). You don't have quite as much control as full PS but using L4 as a plugin I make a duplicate layer in PS, and roundtrip to Luminar and back - then the image file has an "Orton layer" which can have the opacity, blend etc fiddled with.

How does it compare to Luminar Ai orton effect? I absolutely hate Photoshop because it too time consuming and complicated(can't get my head around with layers, command shortcuts etc). I don't edit much my photos. Normally I start with DXO Photolab 5 then I finish rest in Lightroom or Luminar AI.
@kamilpotato3764
@kamilpotato3764 2 жыл бұрын
I worked it out : ) First I use Dxo photolab5 and adjust it there. Afterwards I export it as dng and then open it in Luminar AI for final touches. In Luminar Ai there is a orton effect soft adjustment which can be applied globally or using brush to selected parts. Much faster and more intuitive for me then Photoshop.

In my humble opinion, people also overdo it with landscape photos. We all want to make our photos look interesting, if you have something which is very interesting to start out with (as with your examples) you don't need to do much to make them good or better, where as if you start with a not so great photo, then you also tend to poor on effects (Photoshop/LR) to try to make it more interesting ... it very seldom works. I am of those who don't have many interesting photos, but I at least know that I'm not very lucky.
