In this video I start thinking about a new rc plane kit build series. My next plane will have the OS Max 46 AX II engine that I had mounted on a Great Planes Escapade 40 Sport ARF kit. Unfortunately, the Great Planes Escapade tail section failed during a flight and it crashed and was completely destroyed. In this video I show the running engine mounted upright and sideways with a Bison Pitts Muffler. I also show a few videos of the Great Planes Escapade in flight from the ground and from a camera mounted on the plane. Then I show pictures of the rc plane wreckage. The OS Max 46 AX II engine survived the crash with only minor damage that can easily be fixed with a new carburetor. So I will mount this engine on the new plane I'm going to build which will be the Balsa USA Smoothie. I will be doing an open box review of this kit and start building it soon.
I have been building, flying, crashing, modifying, and repairing radio control planes for many years and enjoy sharing what I do with the radio control plane community. I fly with Futaba radio equipment, OS Max engines and Saito engines and typically run Morgan Omega and Powermaster glow fuels. I fly ARF rc planes, but I also really like to build rc plane kits.

That's the good thing about monokote covered planes... They carry their own trash bag everywhere they go!

You may want to try listening it on ebay. You will sell it for sure. Just measure the box and weigh it, enter that in the ebay app, buyer pays for shipping. Its a great plane, I really enjoyed flying it. If I ever got it again, I would try applying CA glue where ever Could be reached to reinforce it.

Great video, I have a escapade as well I received not complete.i had no idea the whole model is only about150 bucks that's not bad at all.but the one I have only needs servos installed did you go with the single servo or dual for the aileron.can I ask how much would a new 46 engine cost.that model looked like a noble there pretty sharp looking planes.oh now I see the model Esapade is no longer built that smells lol.

Hi, I got my escapade about 4 years ago, and I think since then they may have been on production hold. It seems hard to find the Great Planes anymore. I think the OS .46 ax2 i have is going for a around $190 new. But you may be able to get one used or another brand on ebay and such. I tried this plane with the older OS .40 FP and it was a little sluggish. But I imagine and decent engine in that .45 zone would be great. For the ailerons, I started with the single servo in the center, and it worked great. But later I switched and placed individual servos in the wings, since my radio system could be programmed for flaperons. Having the flap function was helpful slowing it down on landings. One bit of advice is that with any ARF kit, get new bottle of thin CA and try to go over any of the reachable wood connections to make sure its glued properly and also really check things like the rudder and elevator and all that stuff to make sure nothing is loose and then check it from time to time. Mine had a catastrophic crash because the rudder came off. If you search older forums online you will come across stories of the Great Planes coming apart in the air. Just keep an eye on it and check it time to time.

I really enjoyed your video very much and thanks for sharing it. We have a lot in common as I too have been flying a long time, eversince 1986. I also only have ever used Futaba radio equipment, I also fly mainly with OS and Saito engines, though I have one or two electric planes, my heart will always be mainly with glow nitro engine planes. In all my time flying, I've only had two models from Great Planes, both of which I still have, a Piper Cherokee 40 arf and an Escapade 61 arf. I remember the maiden flight of The Escapade 61 which I had powered with a brand new OS 95v fourstroke. The flight went well and when it came to landing the wheels touched down very gently on the grass but to my dismay the undercarriage completely ripped off. I was very disappointed but was still able to fix it again with some epoxy. I di notice that the wood was fairly thin of itself with the undercarriage mounts. Great video and good luck with all your future builds and flights. I have subscribed to your channel.

Thank you, I really appreciate the comment. I stepped away from flying for a long time and got back into it about 5 years ago and I was amazed about how much the hobby had changed, and it looked like all the stuff I was seeing was arfs and electric foamies, Nothing wrong with that, I have 2 Arfs myself, but with more and more looking I was happy to see that people still do build and fly with engines. So this channel is sort of a curiosity on my part to see if there is interest and what people are doing with regard to some of the older way of doing things. Thanks again

I ordered it from online, this was a few years back now. but I don’t think they are easy to get these days because my understanding is Great Planes is no longer around. Probably try searching for it, maybe someone has one in stock.

Hi, I believe I was using an 11-6 or 11-8. Been a while. I know I tried different sizes based on the OS Manual for this engine, but tended to use the 11s. Based on the manual the length were 10, 11, and 12. The 11 seemed to work the best for me.
