What's not being said here is that Bill Russell started winning chips in college with two NCAA Championships for USF and a then record 55 straight wins over two years, and led the USA basketball team to a gold medal at the 1956 Olympics.

When Lebron left him off his Mt Rushmore, Russell responded with "I am glad he did. I played team sports. I won two championships in high school, 2 in college and an Olympics. I won an NBA ring my first year in the league and last year in the league along with the 9 in between. That is etched in stone"

@@0hsoaj513 If you're taking how he played back then and mapping it on to today's game sure, but it's more than likely if he pursued a career in basketball today he would train differently and work on different skill sets. Jordan hit 28 3's in the 1992 regular season, you don't think he would take more three pointers now and tweak his game to be the best in can be in the current era? Of course he would. Anybody would. That's why takes such as yours are pointless.

My era of Basketball in the 90s and earlier 2000s . This Basketball era IQ is so low it's not even funny. Then Zion Williams who can't even come in shape. Guys are setting out 2-3 years its really not that hard to play in these league today those guys would have been way more focus than the guys today. The league is spoiled it lost it hunger to much money involve guys played real Basketball from the 50s 60s 70s 80s 90s 00s.

i've always struggled with what Center i'd have on My Dream V. I love Mr. Abdul-Jabbar & i've heard about Mr. Chamberlain's Numbers, but the fact that Mr. Russell played 14 yrs., was a below avg. to avg. offensive player but was the number 1 defensive player during his era, had SO MANY battles with Mr. Chamberlain due to the small number of Teams there were in The League at that time, & appears to have almost single-handedly shut-down entire Teams with his defensive abilities, i'm taking Mr. Russell as My All-Time Center because i'm extremely intrigued by how great of a player other players claim him to have been. I have the utmost respect & admiration for both Mr. Russell & Mr. Robertson as people.

I don't watch a lot of ESPN - folks like Rex Ryan have put me off watching the morning shows when I have time. I have to say though, Malika Andrews was really impressive on this tribute to Bill Russell. It's so easy to get swept away in the new NBA. I just heard on the radio that Jason Tatum could be eligible for a $60 MILLION contract PER YEAR if he makes All NBA just two more times. I know that there has been inflation, but SIXTY MILLION $$$$ for a single player that has yet to win a championship. It's easy to get caught up in this current age of NBA as entertainment and modern culture, but Ms. Andrews stayed grounded in the accomplishments of these early players, on and off the court. I'm a 70 year old guy that prefers the old game, but I respect that athletes playing today. I have no doubt that Lebron James or MJ could have dominated in the NFL. But the 60s, and the roles of these players to compete in cities that didn't want them. To stay in hotels that didn't want them to eat there. To live in towns that made it clear they weren't welcome. And to compartmentalize all that and go out and play at an incredibly high level. Great job by Ms. Andrews, who (unlike my comment) stayed on point, and paid homage to the greats of the past for their contributions on and off the court. I think that Mr. Russell would have watched and put his head back and laughed that trademark laugh. Well done.

To me its not his rings that make him my favorite NBA player of all time. Its his mentality. The things he sees on and off the court when looking at how the game is played. Russell knew the intricacies and knew that it was more than just pass the ball to one guy or pass to me. Bill could see almost everything and played the pieces accordingly. Also you have to take into consideration that there were less NBA franchises in Bill Russell's Era. Now if AD played in Russell's Era would he have been drafted to a franchise to begin with. According to Bill Russell in an interview he said MJ wouldn't be drafted.

This how great Russell was. When Wilt averaged 50 points a game in 1962 he only averaged 41.6 against Boston. 51.8 against the rest of the league. If the NBA today only had 8 teams, nearly all of them would be superteams. Then imagine one team winning 8 straight chips. And 11 out of 12 seasons. He was an all-time rebounder and shot blocker. He altered the opponents shot even when they couldn't see him because they'd be wondering where he'd come from to block their shot. His blocks were slight taps that let him control the ball. He ran the floor in transition with astounding speed. He dominated with his intelligence and mind games. In the end, it's about winning, not getting a high fg%. The man with highest career fg% in the NBA is Deandre Jordan. I'd rather have Bill Russell on my team than Deandre Jordan.

@@kingvazquez2782 You are soooo wrong. The racism you talk about OUTSIDE of Boston was there inside the city at that time very strongly. I lived there, I know. But before I lived there I grew up in Maine. I am white and Bill Russell was a childhood hero of mine, much because of his activism. He and Ali were my heroes growing up and Jim Brown, too, until I found out how he treated women. Boston has an ugly history with racism. The busing of the late 60s and 70s are examples of this.
