People all know by now that Robertson averaged a triple-double for an entire season, but it's far more amazing that he *averaged a triple-double over the first 5 years of his career!* (30 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists)... Nobody else in NBA history has ever come close to doing that.

Oscar Robertson has to be considered the benchmark for all basketball players both as an athlete and person. I was fortunate to grow up in Cincinnati and play basketball in the era in which he played. My brother and I diligently tried to emulate his shooting style not only because of his accuracy but because of his shooting form and style. In addition and most importantly, Oscar was and is a good role model!

Excellent interview with one of the greatest players of all-time. The Big O was extremely quick but he was measured and efficient. If you gave him a 20 footer, he wanted a 15 footer or better. Oscar was so strong and could back you down or he'd face up, take a 2 or 3 dribbles and shoot it in your face. Of course, The Big O could score on anybody but could also get his teammates involved. If his team needed a stop and a big rebound he could get that too. In that era dunking and fancy dribbling was considered showboating and his game reflected that but don't make the mistake of thinking he couldn't do it because he could. Oscar Robertson would be a superstar in any era, that's how good he was.

Kelly Coleman finished his HS career by scoring 4263 points in 127 games for a 33.6ppg average in his 4-year career at Wayland HS. During the 1955-56 season, he ave 46.8ppg. 6'3"" 210lb at 18 years old. He was the first Kentucky Mr Basketball in '56. He played college ball for Kentucky Wesleyan, and in his three seasons he averaged 27.7ppg. He was picked 11th overall in the 1960 NBA draft by the Knicks, but he had no interest in the NBA due to the low pay. Incredible!.

Oscar was one of the great young players in NBA History, the first player I saw really looking smart and methodical on the court, or in complete control I might say. And I can still only say that about a few players. He was an aggressive player, I don't think he put as much effort in as a few other players that have played in the NBA, but no one was more involved in an offense I don't think, because he would want to be the orchestrator of all the offense, more positive than negative, because like I've hard him say he was all pro 10 times, who else should handle the ball. He was an underrated defensive player, he played on the ball, he didn't go for steals, he would stay with his man, this can be better a lot of the time. I think Elgin is the reason I don't rate Bill Russell very highly, despite being from New England and a Boston Celtics fan from 1953-present day. He would take it to Russell in the paint all the time, and scored 61 vs the Celtics in 62'. He would outplay Russell.

Some of the greatest things that Oscar did off the court are never talked about. Being from Indiana, I will always be grateful for him bringing Roger Brown to the Indiana Pacers. Roger got into some problems when he was young and was banned from competition. Oscar went out of his way to get him into the pros. Oscar knew he was an excellent talented ball player that deserved a chance. Oscar talked the owner of the Pacers in the old ABA to give him a shot. Roger became an all star and a hall of famer. During the era of the Big O the emphasis was on defense, rebounding and the inside game not three point shots and dunks. There were was no cheap shots on defense like you saw in the 80's and 90's. These cats really did play D. Hakeem Olajuwon was a great shot blocker but in the Big O's day there was Nate Thurmond, Wilt, Russell, Reed, Bellamy, Gilmore and Alcindor. The big men in today's NBA do not intimidate or alter shots the way they did back in 60's and 70's. Always remember when Russell and Chamberlain squared off the two them combined for around 50 rebounds and 20 blocks. In an era with this kind of dominance Big O still averaged a triple double almost every time he walked on the court. Simply amazing....

Have you've seen how some of these kats that play now speak? What i'm referring to is the effort on brothers from that to sound educated and present themselves in a way that's classy. not as many stars now hold themselves to that standard. they are some to be sure, but there are far more that don't. Wheras in HIS era, a black man put forth MORE effort to be classy. Just an observation from me bro. Never questioned how "ignorant" anyone was/wasn't.

g5162 Nonsense. If you listen to Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Elgin Baylor in addition to Oscar Robertson they all were excellent speakers with the credentials to be the leaders they were. Even the Harlem Globetrotters who were called clowns were well-spoken tremendous basketball players. It's no accident the college-trained players of the '50s-1990s are much more complete talkers than the youngsters just out of high school and into the NBA today. Remember, in professional sports MIND and body are ONE. Professional basketball players are not there because they're dumb-dumbs.
@g516210 жыл бұрын
2dasimmons, I think you are off topic just a tad. The original comment compared black men of that era to black men today-not just basketball players. He said Big O represented black men of that era, as if "jive" talk wasn't prevalent then. My rebuttal is that there was a higher percentage of illiterate black men then compared to today. In fact, more African American men are graduating college now then in the 50s,60s or 70s. Although the margin of increase is declining. After examining the context in which we were speaking, you should clearly understand that my reply was NOT nonsense. In addition, I'm not so gullible as to believe that the J.r Smiths' of the world is a good representation of black men today just because the media likes to televise their antics.
@2dasimmons10 жыл бұрын
g5162 BUT black men ARE BLACK MEN whether basketball players or not. My point is that black men are some of the greatest leaders, perhaps the BEST, because they have tremendous intelligence and strength. However in AMERICA, the anagram: I AM RACE I have witnessed a conspiracy AGAINST black men stemming back to slavery. This has been most evident through professional sports and education. Today I understand why slave masters refused to let the blacks learn to read/write though exceptions occurred. After learning about Black Wall Street I also understand why the 40 ACRES AND A MULE were never given as promised. I can imagine the pride and honor CHris Webber felt shaking Oscar Robertson's hand. Tremendous. Be well. Good-bye and shalom.

What a fantastic interview. Mr. Robertson was my favorite player growing up. I have always bragged about him even though I know he was to humble and classy to hoot his own horn. Mr. Webber is also full of class and did a great interview. I wish more young people would look at previous generations of experience in all walks of life and gain something positive from them instead of dismissing them as old and clueless. Chris Webber could be a very good interviewer as a professional in my opinion.

Good job Chris, But Oscar was the star of the interview, I'm 78 yrs old, I remember when was drafted by the Cincinnati Royals, Big O was my hero, Absolutely the best point guard EVER, they weren't even called Point guards at the time, doesn't matter what they called them he was going to win,by outplaying you, period,, Oscar Robinson is a class act, he means a lot to me, we from the same era !!! Hats off O'GEE !!!

Chris, very engaging interview of one of the greatest players and pioneers of the game. As a kid born in 1952 in Indianapolis, unlike my older sisters, I was too young to attend any of the Crispus Attucks High School games during the 1950s, but my dad made it a point to take me to the rare NBA game at the Fairgrounds Coliseum whenever Oscar and the Cincinnati Royals came to town.

Mr. Oscar Robertson is a true Gentleman and one of the best B-Ball players EVER! He was treated so terribly and that is the truth of the matter - God Bless you, Big O. You broke all the barriers and made it EASY for those who came after you - YOU ARE THE GREATEST - May you enjoy your days and be happy - you earned it! ;-]

"Oh, no". lol It seemed like dunking was a dirty thing. I remember in the 70s going to the library, and they would have these beautiful full-sized, hard-cover basketball books with photo illustrations. Oscar was one of my favourites along with Wilt and Kareen and many others.

WOW! Great interview Chris. I didn't realize that Milwaukee literally pushed him out! Oscar's dignity has prevailed through it all! The current player's owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for his courage, strength and overall sense of wanting to do what was right! You're simply the best Big O!
