Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng discuss the 80th Academy Awards in 2008, which almost unfolded very differently had the writers' strike not ended weeks before. "No Country Old Men" ruled with four wins, including Best Picture, topping a year of "psychopathic killer movies," as host Jon Stewart quipped, that included "There Will Be Blood" and "Sweeney Todd." Plus: How did Tilda Swinton come out on top of that wild Best Supporting Actress race?

The 80th Academy Awards has a special place for me. It was the first year I got into the Oscar race. I was in the first year of high school and learned so much about precursors, momentum and what award season really meant.

I was very happy with all acting wins. The only one I'd be fine with a switch would be Christie for Cotillard ONLY because both sensational and both way different in that one really cannot compare the two.

Katherine Heigl's retconning of her situation is legitimately impressive. She used to take her momager (as a grown adult) with her to set, and her mom would scream at the crew of Grey's, eg in the makeup trailer, etc. She was legit difficult to work with and never took responsibility for that. Heigl is trying to make it like she stood up for herself. Besides, I wouldn't want to hire someone who would dump on my movie or show, esp while they were on/in it. This isn't like when people were mean to Anne Hathaway for no reason. As for Actors on Actors, Black Twitter has been calling out Ellen Pompeo for years. Denzel took the high road there. The two of them painting their careers as strong women standing against the system made me cringe so hard.

Cotillard and Marianelli are all-timer winners in their respective categories. Great, great year.

10:15 I love going to the movies by myself. Most of my greatest cinematic experiences have been on my own, going back to the 70s. Nice overview of the year - it was a cracking one. Some really good movies you didn't mention that got no Oscar love - Adrienne Shelley's Waitress, Sidney Lumet's Before The Devil Knows You're Dead (featuring the first opening sex scene, I think, since Betty Blue in 1986), Julie Delpy's Two Days In Paris and probably the comedy of the year Superbad. Totally agree with all your category choices, except. I think, Assassination of Jesse James should have been considered for Best Picture, certainly over Atonement. It is a stellar year with Zodiac, No Country, TWBB at the top with Diving Bell and Assassination not far behind - they are my five, with Michael Clayton, Once, The Savages, Into The Wild and 4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days making up my 10.

It's nice to hear some Smokin' Aces love. That movie is woefully underrated imo.

:( Atonement was my favorite film of that year. Exquisite from top to bottom. And to hear you guys not be too high on it is a huge bummer, for me. My other fave of that year was Hairspray. How could that not get one nomination, anywhere? Travolta or Pfeiffer (fun as Hell), plenty of great techs, songs, etc. Oh well. Def think that NCFOM and TWBB are the cream of the crop of the year, per say. I dig how well they did at the Oscars. I just happened to prefer Atonement on the whole.

Love your work, thank you. Zidiac, sooo good. I dont understand the lack of nominations But i understand the Gyllenhaal miss because he doesnt take control, for lack of a better phrase, until the last hour where he becomes True Lead. You know the Academy, prob didnt watch it all, hence no Gyllenhaal nod.
