The Sound of Music is not just any movie, It’s an international cultural phenomenon. The movie is universally beloved by many people and cultures around the world. That is it’s strength. Dr. Zhivago is an amazing movie, and in many ways artistically superior, but it could never reach the level of universal admiration such as the Sound of Music. I can think of only 2 other movies that I would consider in the same category of The Sound of Music. Gone with The Wind, and Star Wars. These are the movies that might defy artistic superiority with simply transcend culturally.

I definitely agree with you, Mike Sassine. However, Star Wars was actually outbeaten for Best Picture by "Annie Hall", as chosen by the Academy itself. The Sound of Music has been, is and always will be one of our favorite films of our lives. We never would, inspirationally, have a sound of music if that film wasn't made and didn't win Best Picture!

Hard to go against that. 👍 I would add Ben Hur to that mix. It is still a breathtaking movie fifty plus years later.

Sound of Music, Wizard of Oz and Star Wars are obvious, these movies are international, it’s even dubbed in Chinese. I might also add Titanic, cause there’s not a person I know that didn’t watch it.

To focus the affect the movie has on people, allow me to give you a personal experience. In the early 1970s I was an enlisted man on an aircraft carrier and "The Sound of Music" had just become available. The night it was shown on the black and white ship tv network I sat with a room full of gritty sailors who have a habit of doing some hilarious things during movies (night). When the movie began the room was full and for the first time I watched these rough gritty men sit quietly watching this movie. I went through the ship and encountered the same thing. No one was speaking and it was perfectly quiet until the movie ended. It was the only time I experience this during my four years in the Navy.

Those were the days when acceptance speeches were short, sweet, and to the point. Nowadays, we have lengthy speeches and way too elaborate production numbers. No wonder why the Oscars don't end on time. All they need to do is simply keep the acceptance short, sweet and to the point; as well as get rid of the over-flashy production numbers. After all, this is an awards show; not a Broadway show.

The Sound Of Music's Best Picture win was also a major victory for 20th Century Fox; until that film came along, Cleopatra almost bankrupted the studio with its mounting production costs ($31 million, which was HUGE money for 1963!) and low box office receipts...though it did win six Oscars in the end.

Thank you Oscar channel for this video, you answered my request! Doctor Zhivago was excellent, but ''The Sound of Music'' is THE movie. This movie has a inexplicable magic. Is one of the best musicals ever made. Is a masterpiece from the movies. And, please, I want to see Christopher, Julie and the seven actors who played the Von Trapp children presenting the Best Picture Oscar someday. What about in 2016 Oscar ceremony, that the movie will be celebrating the 50th anniversary?

Let's face it, the winning choice, although wildly popular, was not much creatively. The film was old fashioned even then, and the story not very interesting. The music, classic, and photography fine. But the Academy displayed its choices of Best Actress (the luminous, unforgettable, multi-dimensional Julie Christie), and original Script winners (amazing work by Fredric Raphael), to "Darling" ... IMHO, still a masterpiece, and easily the Best Film.
