She signs to Troy "congratulations, I Love you", before announce it... she tried to said it to Troy first even though she doesn't know ASL, so she made an effort and learned a bit just in case, because she wanted that Troy knew he was the winner before the hearing people and this is INCREDIBLY thoughtful, because he deserved it to know first and no after the rest cheered because someone else translated it or by context only

I love it when Yuh-Jung Youn signed "Congratulations, I love you", and when she did that, everyone started freaking out when they realized it was Troy's win before his name was announced. I also appreciate that they used deaf applause for him. It was incredibly respectful for all of them to do that. And Troy's speech was so beautiful. A huge congratulations to Troy and to the CODA cast.

That unsure laugh at 2:44 when audience was not seeing the reason why Yuh-Jung Youn was taking away Troy's Oscar shows just how much we need to learn in order to incorporate deaf community completely in the society. Once he starting his sign speech, we understood why he could not be holding something in his hands, but we were confused together for the second or two. We will learn, CODA was a big step in the right direction.

Erm, all due respect, but not only the Deaf community. As someone who has failing sight, more representation needs to happen for all “challenges.” But, as someone with a disability, i also know that I’m “blessed with the burden” of education.

My favorite moment from this year’s Academy Awards. A well deserved Oscar for Troy Kotsur. And loved Youn Yuh Jung presenting, she’s so spontaneous and funny. Also loved the fact that she stayed on stage by his side, made me remember the 1965 Oscars when Audrey Hepburn presented Rex Harrison Best Actor and the two stayed hugged on stage. However, I have one thing to say on this category: I’ll never understand how on earth Mike Faist was not nominated for his performance in Spielberg’s West Side Story. His acting as Riff was a REVELATION, hope he gets recognized by the Academy soon

I liked CODA as a film. But Troy is the best part of this film! The love of a father is so strong even though he doesn't talk in the film. The scenes where they're signing so fast during an argument, give the same effect as if the words were actually spoken. As a hearing person who is learning ASL, I think Emilia did an awesome job learning in just under a year. I don't have any deaf family members but I definitely felt the struggle of people asking you what dirty words are in ASL 😂😂😂 Congrats, Troy! (I love that everyone was doing the deaf version of clapping/celebration!)

This win for Troy is a huge victory for the deaf community as a whole. Sign language, particularly American Sign Language, is still a relatively young language. It wasn't officially recognized as a language until the 50's I believe. For many years, deaf and hard-of-hearing people were forced to orally speak. Much of the spoken language depends on what we hear to pronounce words correctly. Proper syntaxes and all that. Marlee Matlin became the first deaf performer to win an Oscar many years earlier. It has taken nearly 40 years for another deaf performer to win. Here's to seeing more of the deaf community getting more recognition alongside other communities with physical limitations moving forward with those without such limitations. The next big thing involving a deaf performer playing a deaf character is the MARVEL series ECHO coming soon to Disney+. Alaqua Cox, who is actually deaf, plays Maya Lopez, a young woman who can perfectly mimic another person's fighting ability and style by watching them. The character made her live-action debut in the series Hawkeye. She is also the first deaf woman superhero in the comics. Much like Daredevil was a huge boon for the blind community, Echo represents the deaf community in showing that the only limits are what we put on ourselves.
