Welcome to a full beginners guide on how to use OsmAnd, which is arguably one of the best GPS navigation apps for your smartphone. In this video I explain step by step on how the app works, my favourite features, how to plan a route and how to download offline maps. Osm "And" the "And" means "Automated Navigation Directions". OsmAnd (OSM Automated Navigation Directions) is an open source mapping and navigation application which uses OpenStreetMap (OSM) data for both online and offline use.

Great tutorial for beginners. Thanks! One thing to note though is that this app (or any of the apps you mentioned) are not endorsed or affiliated with the OpenStreetMap project, so they're not "official" in any way, and OSM is not responsible for the development of these apps. OSM contribute the data used to produce the maps in these apps, and it's up to the developers how they use it -- as long as they attribute, as required by the license.

I watched this to find out how to plan a route from A to B to plan a trip and how to save planned routes. The video only mentions routes from your location. I would say A to B is essential. Other than that it was useful. Now I will watch the advanced. Thanks for the video.

Hi ! I first downloaded the free version of the program Osmand, and then bought the paid version of the program for a month (Osmand Pro) and the sound does not work on Iphone 12 pro, when I already entered the route and navigation is in progress, the sound sign is turned on, but the smartphone does not make any sounds ! Please help me how to set up or find the sound. Thanks a lot !

I was blown away by the quality of this App. I coudnt believe they just gift you that many mapdownloads without any timerestraint. You can even change your decisions at every time. The maps themselves are also very detailed and have many POI's. 10€ per year for all features and unlimited downloads is ok I suppose, but the 25€ in a 1-time purchase are surely the cheaper option on the long run.

I don't know why the app can't find places by directions (asking name of the street + number). Maybe I miss something. Great video!

Thanks for the video! Learned a lot! :) Imagine if you're biking and following a gpx track. You want to know how far a particular city / camp ground / ... is. However you want to know this info based on if you were to keep following the gpx track and not create and alternative route. How can one do this? So what I want to know is pretty much, from point a on a gpx track to point b on that track, how far it is following the track. Can you please tell me how to find this info?

Trying to figure out how to make Navigation function on screen to orientation of travel. I am having to touch and turn the screen when I make a turn in a different direction. It's got to be easier than I am finding! TIA

I had it navigate a route for me. It asked me to download over 3gb of maps to do that. Can I not use it without massive amounts of offline maps?

Is this the best FREE app to setup up routes, record actual routes take...and offline GPS? then save later. Also can I somehow setup my routes/maps on PC to be used on my phone..as the phone screen is so small.

Thanks for the app suggestion, amazing! If I could somehow upload the GPX file made with this app to my Garmin watch, this would be amazing. That way I could plan ahead and prepare the tour for the next day super easily!

I know right! People give Osmand such a bad rap considering what you can do with it I think it's highly with the money for the pro version. Maybe with a USB cable into the phone from your watch this might be possible.

Google maps has a very, very outdated version of my location (possibly 10 years old). I'd choose anything over it.

And do you know why sometimes it takes to long to plan the route? I mean sometimes you insert the address and it takes like 2 minutes. Is this normal?

Osmand uses your phone CPU to calculated your routes offline, compared to Google Maps using its online servers to calculated the desired root.

I use OsmAnd on an age-old Lenovo A3500 from 2014 (Android 4.4.2 (KitKat), Chipset Mediatek MT8382 (28 nm) CPU Quad-core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A7 GPU Mali-400MP2 Memory Card slot microSDHC (dedicated slot) Internal 8GB 1GB RAM, 16GB 1GB RAM. Technically it runs okay with it. i searched for a better tablet than this one and did never found a better one which I could afford - there seem no better cheap ones. I am not sure if SomAnd is a good app. It is so complicated that I consider it not reliable. Why does it stop recording GPX when I make a pause, not even looking at the tablet, let aside touch some "Stop" button?! Will try locus maps and check google maps. But run it will.

This works fine for me, going by street name as it doesn't have all buildings marked/numbered. You can actually improve this by submitting improvements to the dataset of the house location/size(if needed) and number. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e5eJfblnrsXWmI0.html

Hi, I experienced a problem with OsmAnd which was nable to continue recording a route after 900meters of ride and it was unable to find GPS location cca 100km when I realized malfunction. OsmAnd didn't freeze nor crashed. I couldn't fix the problem myself but an application called "gps status and toolbox" solved the problem. I can't get used to a practice that the problem is solved by installing an app. It makes me feel useless. 🙂

As far as I know, no. But you can import data manually into the app yourself or perhaps Open Street Maps database has a area to import data from other users using the app.

I downloaded 2 times and installed 2 times... in car android.... but Voice does not work ..in car unit....why?

I don't think the app has android auto support. It should have Bluetooth support

This application is just hopeless. Voice commands is total haos. For instance you hear 20 times, second after second, 'you have reached your intermediate destination'. You have notification 'turn right and continue next... ZERO meters'. Visual information is not any better. Screen rotates from right to left even if u go straight. After turn screen... map does not change.
