I'm so baffled that GSM is still such a proprietary thing. So props to the people reverse engineering the whole thing and re-implementing it
@ongunkanat
@ongunkanat 5 жыл бұрын
Many technologies you have been using is proprietary. Like CDs, BR discs, GSM, LTE, phone cameras, touch screens, almost all of the IoT devices even MP4 files. Unless somebody reverse engineers the reference implementations or some company open sources their implementation it would be much harder to learn stuff for avid students or software enthusiasts like us.
@D4no00
@D4no00 5 жыл бұрын
they kept it proprietary more for a security reason. Having open-source software are two sides of a coin: you have full access to the software and can implement it on different chips, however at the same time it can be exploited since the very nature of how it communicates is not secure. Compared to a let's say android security hole, because of the size of the network and the number of phones and sims that are already active it is pretty much impossible to roll out a security patch.

Wouldn't it still infringe on DMCA and potentially get a copyright strike from KZfaq? Heck, all they need to do is file a DMCA takedown even if they _aren't_ in the right. Although as as the owners I don't see how they wouldn't be in the right. However, considering that very little of the document was shown, and that it was used for educational purposes (had the whole thing been shown, I think it would not have been fair use), I suppose that protects it _THEORETICALLY_ from DMCA, but still doesn't prevent a DMCA takedown being filed, getting a copyright strike, and having to counter-file (which costs time and $$$) in order to prevent it.

Please make some video about how really ISP's work? How come that, if we dont have a Plan, The Provider will not accept our queries, is it kind of a program? that prevents us from accessing the internet?. Please. In really curious about it. I Can't even find it in the Internet.

you don't need to spam comments to ask a question. But I don;t know exactly how it works, because I never worked at an ISP. But yeah, basically you have account credentials on your routerand so you simply login with your ISP.

Alexis ValentinoVEVO At least the basic principle is: the internet is a connection of independent networks, all with a different ASN. They are all individually owned and together form "the internet". They are externally connected via globally distributed data exchange hubs and major optic fibre cables, which make up the backbone of the internet. Most of these fiber cables are owned by a few private companies (Level 1) who once invested money into creating this infrastructure and now make money by e.g. selling bandwidth resp. leasing them to smaller companies (like e.g. the major telco or cable companies) (level 2). These level 2 companies might act as ISPs themselves or again lease connectivity/sell bandwidth to smaller companies (level 3) that act as ISP. So in principle an ISP is just a company who has somehow rented or bought access to the internet backbone. All they are doing now is selling access to their network to end-customers. Technically this (at least in the case of DSL dial up) is usually done with modern variants of the age old PPP protocol (e.g. PPPoE). At least in principle on a very high level that's it. Not magic at all. The exact implementation and if they have their own local MAN e.g. with local optic fibres to the door of the end-customer etc varies from carrier to carrier, but that's relatively irrelevant. No matter if DSL, cable, or mobile, these are just different connectivity methods to the same network, and therefore in principle just different technologies doing the same thing.

There is this huge router in your ISP premises called a BAS or BRAS (Broadband Remote Access Server) that does the authentication on your account username/password. This server talks to the Data billing server (if you have paid your bill/ or you have enough GB). Once validated, it grants you permission to access another router to direct your traffic towards the internet.

Usually an ISP will authenticate your router at home with pppoe protocol. This will establish a speed and IP address for your link. The way that the ISP interacts with the internet is through the BGP protocol on a beefy router that can handle a lot of requests. I work at an ISP.

Just in flat out simple terms, it's the only phone baseband chip with documentation available. All the rest are black boxes (we dont know what happens inside them except what we gather from their input and output). This isn't something inherent to phones, for instance it is a similar situation with graphics cards. Manufacturers don't want to leak their secret sauce, so often Graphics cards are gimped or not working at all on Open Source operating systems (linux, freebsd etc). It's a fundamental black mark on whether or not something is free or if we actually own it if we can't do whatever we want to with it, besides that for all we know any black box is insecure, maybe there is code running on your baseband chip that the NSA can leverage to send all your texts home to them. We don't really know outside of analyzing the packets it sends which, if we can analyze them proves that they are insecure and we should be able to run our own secure implementation (of whatever chip, graphics base band or other black box device). To be clear, the situation is more nuanced and I am sort of paraphrasing. My knowledge is fairly limited and I wanted to try to make it clear for yourself and those asking similar questions.

@@justingt3rs No problem, Android drivers use binary blobs (which is just chunks of the system that source code is unavailable for) making it so it can't be modified or compiled in the future when whatever phone manufacturer stops sending updates because it is in their interest for you to buy a new phone. We'll be stuck with security flaws that are wide open and documented, and unable to patch them ourselves. This particular aspect of it is going to get more and more relevant as Moore's law makes it harder to squeeze more out of these already tiny components there's less and less compelling reasons to buy a new phone (or whatever device) while the one you have still works. Companies will be trying to create artificial reasons to compel us to buy the latest and "greatest" device. There's some kind of legal gymnastics in the licenses that allow them to be called "Open Source" but realistically, they're just "Somewhat Open Source".

It appears that this error may be related to a bug in older versions of GCC although I am by no means an expert, it's just what I gather from Google and StackExchange. If you are following what is in the OsmoComBB Wiki under the "OSX getting started" page, it hasn't been updated in about 2 years and I would suggest using the current versions of the tools and libraries described. No, right now 5G (NR) is using LTE as an anchor to the network for synchronization or 'handshake'. But GSM is still used pretty heavily for voice. Even on LTE, your phone would fall back to GSM to make the phone call. But recently we are migrating to voice over LTE (VoLTE) and I guess it would be the end of GSM dependence.

Replace the closed source baseband firmware on compatible phones with open source code. Why? Because you can be reasonably certain the open source code is secure and doesn't have backdoors or exploits. You can't be sure of this with closed source since you can't see the code. Also, you don't have to rely on the manufacturer to provide a driver anymore. So if you want to upgrade or replace the OS, you're not restricted by what versions the driver supports. Often it's impossible to upgrade older phones to new versions because they stop making the drivers, because they want you to buy a new phone instead. With open source drivers you don't have that problem. Or, you could build your own phone using only open source code.
