My greyhound, Nero, passed away May 3, 2023. He broke his right rear leg just above the ankle during a walk. I took him to an emergency vet. They repaired the bone with metal strips. A few months later the swelling started. His regular vet examined the pre-op x-ray and it showed the cancer at the break, It was the reason for the break. The emergency vet operated on a cancerous bone without any investigation! It was a surgery that never should have taken place and costs a total of $7,000. Beware of unethical vets.

my dog had surgery April 7. it was me who requested xray because the vet never suggested it. Last night, May 30, my dog walked upstairs! He jumped on a bed! He eats like a king. I see he sleeps a lot more but he is active and happy in the morning. We are grateful to be together here still. The surgery was barbaric (Pitt County Animal Hosp, NC).

Our 6 1/2 year old greyhound has just been diagnosed with OSA in her knee. She's on some stronger painkillers to help handle it and we are currently working on a decision. It's either amputation and chemo or paliative care. I understand she will go well with three legs, that not the issue. With the expectation being 10-12 months with chemo and amputation and the cost of the surgery and treatment just for her to feel worse so quickly after that. I know you say that a year is a long time and it is but for the cost too. We are at a loss, heartbroken and feel guilty for our thought of leaning towards paliative care. She has had her CT and it hasn't visibly spread for the moment. Stil so unsure.

Dr Sue, any advice!? Not sure where else to turn. My 9 year old double Merle deafie dane was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) back in June of last year 2020.. so almost 14 months ago. She was given 3-6 months to live and I was told by my vet that our only 2 options were 1. amputation which we decided against bc of her age, the fact that she has bad back legs (metal plate and 8 screws in each back leg from TPLO surgery), and that my vet said with this type of cancer it has probably already spread and it’s so fast moving that we could amputate and run the risk of it not lengthening her lifespan at all OR 2. Keep her as comfortable as possible and let her live out her life at home with pin management which is what we chose. Fast forward to now she’s finally starting to limp and act as though she might be getting to the end of her life and I get a phone call from my vet saying that she’s conferred with the other vets in the office and they have decided that this is no longer bone cancer bc they have never had a dog live this long and they have never seen a tumor this big. So now they’re thinking it’s either a different type of cancer or a slim possibility of it being a fungal infection?? Either way we are back to square 1 with a diagnosis and I’m kind of upset that no one ever talked to me about the possibility of a misdiagnosis until 14 months in when she’s in more pain and this thing has progressed this much. Now I feel like no matter what the new diagnosis is, there’s really no treatment options bc she’s lived with it for so long but my Mama heart just HAS to know what it is. She’s my 1st baby and we have been through the ringer together and I feel like I owe it to her to give her everything I’ve got in me. So here’s my issue. My vet wants to do a biopsy but doesn’t think it’s an “emergency” enough to get her in right away and scheduled us for a month out for surgery. I can’t stand just sitting here watching her limp around so I started calling mobile vets in the area and oncologists. Apparently there are 0 mobile vets that will come to my area and there is only 1 oncologist within an hour of me that is accepting new patients and they’re booking out till November😳 I don’t think she will make it to November... it’s literally killing me that I can’t even get someone to have a consult with me to see what this thing is!

We’ve lost 2 dogs (Pitt Bull & Chihuahua) to osteosarcoma since moving to the west coast of Florida 4.5 yrs ago. They both had it in their back leg and our vet recommended not treating because it may prolong their lives an extra year. So we just kept them as comfortable as possible until it was time. 😭

David Ginchereau omgoodness I am so sorry 😥 we had about a year more with both of our dogs. My big guy started to favor his back leg & limp. I was given by my vet anti inflammatories and that was it. He said if he gave him strong pain meds he was afraid that he would break his leg while playing because this causes their bones to become very brittle. We knew when it was time to say goodbye because he wouldn’t eat and didn’t want to get up anymore.... 😥 Love him a little extra every minute of every day.

David Ginchereau I am not in any way a veterinarian just an animal lover. Maybe research vitamins or natural supplements that will slow it down. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m a little afraid of veterinarians in my area because it seems like they are very quick to diagnose and drain your pocket.. I hope you have a wonderful and trustworthy veterinarian.

My K9 partner recently retired, had TPLO on his Right Rear leg 1 1/2 years ago. He has a tumor on his right front leg around the carpus area in that sort of notch/valley area. It's scheduled for removal in four days. Hoping it's nothing but trying to get up to speed on all this. Thanks for your information on this. Wish you were in Oklahoma!

Hi everyone, my 10 year old male Akita Inu was found with Osteosaroma in his front left foor. We amputated and the doctors did already the first chemotherapy to my dog....but i am worried about my health living together with a dog during his chemo. My Vet never warned me about taking precautions and measures for my personal health... Thank god the dog neither vomited nor had diarrhea and i always bag his poop But he should tell me to wear gloves too and most important he should tell me to avoid kissing him near his mouth and muzzle and not let him lick me !!! Now i am trying to remember the first three days after his first chemo, what kind of contact i had with my dog and i am freaking out because i learned that the chemo could be cancerous for the people .....I let him lick my leg a little and i kissed him on the muzzle near the mouth right after his first chemo when the Vet brought him to me.... Could any suspicious contact that i had with my dog with his saliva and poop be fatal for my health ?

Our 7 yr old son was diagnosed with cancer osteosarcoma 😩😩😭💔💔 he started complaining about his right knee hurting playing flag football 🏈 we took him to see our dr and he said I don’t want to guess let’s get an X-ray the next day March 28 th I stopped by the office after work he took me into his office and he put the X-ray up and said that is a tumor but I do not know what kind 😩😩 I fainted 💔💔at that point I knew the life our little family of 4 had was gone 😭💔 the next thing we knew we were in a hospital in SF the next 3 yrs was a blur and I have PTSD from this whole experience we had to watch our son suffer and suffer after chemo then operations it was literally a parents worst nightmare 💔😭 We had a close friends dog started limping of course the vet was just guessing and he came to our house and I asked him have they taken an X-ray ? No ! Go to that vet and tell him to STOP GUESSING an order an X-ray! After the X-ray they did a biopsy and we were shocked he also had OSTEOSARCOMA all of those emotions came back they did chemo and again it wasn’t working and he passed away 🐶💔😭 human or pet it’s devastating and while I was in the hospital with our son ( we never left him in the hospital alone ) when he would fall asleep I would walk around and it just broke my heart to see so many kids sick with some kind of cancer after the walk I had to go take a shower so I could cry my eyes out it’s just devastating I will never recover from this
