Here's a short review of an inexpensive, entry-level SCART / RCA switch from Otaku-Games. It's great for the price, but please remember it's NOT a converter! This is just a passthrough device!

This kind of shorter review is absolutely very worthwhile. Just having someone who knows what they're talking about do a quick sanity check on a product is often all that's really needed. I'll probably pick up one of these for myself, since its simplicity and flexibility would probably come in handy in various situations.

Great review! Really interested in this device. Just to be sure though - if you input Scart and output RCA, you MUST use it on a pvm/bvm, correct (since there is no conversion, therefore sync is not on one of the cables needed for YPbPr)?

This is pretty good. Wondering if i will have a problem with sync with luma for the ps1's? the rest will be c-sync to the framemeister. Im going to have some component for the xbox, ps2 Ill just put some tape there so i don't mix them up. So i won't have any degrading in picture quality right? I think this is about the right amount of of connections for my needs. IDK if i may need more in the future but everything is turning into fpga so it doesn't matter much.

Regarding the voltage regulator it is indeed useful for scart tvs like you said. As pin 8 should have on the output 9 to 12v for automatic switching to the scart input with the display in a 4:3 ratio mode (5v on that pin usually triggers the change to a 16:9) this is usually not needed is just for convenience. On pin 16 it needs 1 to 3 volts to force the TV to RGB mode (so there should be a resistor after the voltage regulator if it is a 7805 for attenuation like is required for most scart cables). From what you showed it looks like that with a power supply you could use RCA cables to feed the switch and output the video with a scart cable and have the pin 16 with the proper voltage.

So on the description of this product on their web page, Otaku games states "It is also usable as a Component Switch but needs to have a power supply connected to work in that mode." How does this work using a Retro Tink 5X? The website says built in RGB to component Converter. That makes me think I could hook a RGB cable to this and run it into the component side of the tink. I assume it would just output through the Scart. I guess what I'm saying is can I share component and SCART on the same channel plugged into the Tink as long as both are not on.

This thing looks great because it seems to not only be a good switch box but also a good way to make everything compatible with the retrotink. Am I missing something or is the process actually that simple?

This switch does NOT convert the signals, only passes them through. You'd have to convert RGB to component for the TINK Pro to be compatible.

@DyLAm73 3 жыл бұрын
@@RetroRGB Got it. I was a bit confused because I had heard someone else say something along the lines of "you can basically think of the Retrotink component inputs as RGB inputs", and I misunderstood that as meaning they were compatible with RGB and component. I did a bit of research and apparently Otaku games has a version of this switch with a built in RGB-component converter that costs a decent amount more.

Obviously it's an edge case, but would this likely damage something outputting to both the RCA and the Scart output at once? This might be a dumb question but I cant find a simple answer. For an RGB modded NES could i put the video through a scart cable and the audio through RCA cables into the same input, then output both the audio/video through the component out into my Trinitron using this device? Its my understanding it’s advisable to avoid putting audio through the SCART cable on Nes and people have mixed feelings about stereo vs mono. Was planning on keeping stock NES audio.

noting the comment at 4:59... could you get away with doubling up SCART/RCA on one input slot as long as only one console was powered on at at time? Or is that still a bad idea? Currently I am mixing and matching on this switch and it's working out great. GameCube component, SNES SCART and PS2 SCART going into different inputs... SCART to BNC going out into a PVM. Works perfectly! Only asking the above question because I'm gonna end up with 6 SCART devices + 1 component when my shopping is done. Might have to settle for a "manual switch" here and there! Or heck, maybe Dreamcast can settle for S-Video since the PVM has a separate input available for it... but I digress. Thanks again for the great video!

They must be under the weather bc of all the bad stuff going on this year, and HK a special case with extra trouble besides the Rona,, but at least they still breathing, and yes their switch rocks, for the price it is a much, MUCH better purchase than any of the insane 200+ bucks indie switches, I'd rather buy 2x Otaku switches if I needed more than 6 inputs, rather than a single of those fancy automatic ones. Hey Bob, I'm sort of confused on what you mean by only use one? I was planning on getting this in the hopes of it taking in 3 component cables and 3 SCART cables, and then using both the component out and SCART out directly into my retrotink 5x at the same time. Is this a bad idea? Like I know they will be doing dual output, but does that mean I need to unplug the component when I use SCART or unplug the SCART when I flip the switch to a component console? If that doesn't work doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of this having both?
@RetroRGB
@RetroRGB 2 жыл бұрын
Respectfully, you're both fully understanding and "not getting it" at the same time. The purpose of the two outputs is for people to choose what's easiest for them to use, EITHER the RCA or SCART outputs. What you're suggesting is not the intended use. Why not find a cheap component switch on eBay and use this for SCART only?

If you're only a few months in, be proud...this stuff can be REALLY confusing, but you already seem to have a good grasp on it. @@RetroRGB The device you tested has 6 additional rca/component boards for input. On the website, you can also buy a model without those. I just wanted to point out that this model (and also your tested model) has a little switch next to the standard component board and when you turn it on, you can also pass through a component signal to your CRT, so this board is not just for output! I tested it and it works. The additional component board helps me to pass through my component signal coming from my Corio2 downscaler, which is connected to my PC. You didn't mention this in your video, that's why I brought it up. This info might be interesting for people who only want or need one component input and want to save some money. Keep up the good work! Love your channel :)

@@RetroRGB Should this switch theoretically pass Component without adding any noise if the cables are good? I was thinking of grabbing a second one for my component stuff, since I have one in use for SCART already, but I bought some HD Retrovision Male to male cables, and tested the switch with them and my Carby Component, and i get so much more noise thru the switch than connecting Carby to the RT5x directly.. does that mean the HD Retrovision cables are bad?

I had gotten a hold of them when I challenged my charge through my credit card company. After that it went smoothly thanks to the credit card company backing me up.

Isin't that voltage regulator part of some kind rgb to yuv converting unit. Guessing that because on their page Otaku says you need power supply: 'Additionally to the regular 6 Port Scart Switch it has RCA RGB inputs on all 6 inputs. It is also usable as a Component Switch but needs to have a power supply connected to work in that mode. Please be aware that only standard size Scart connectors fit on this variant as shown in the product pictures.' But as I said, it's only my guess. And to be honest doubt power supply is needed for scart, because if consol is not feeding scart with voltage tv won't set into rgb mode but should have composite video insted.
