Here’s a review of the Koryuu Transcoder, a device that converts Composite and S-Video to YPbPr Component video. The device is brand new and the developer has spoken about potentially adding some interesting updates in future firmware versions...but for now, here’s how to use it and how it performs!

You're so fast, thanks for a great video! Regarding the component input orientation, I believe one of Matt's intentions was for the Koryuu to be stacked on top the OSSC (at least according to the product description and user-guide), and a really short component cable run would make for a neat combo setup. That way the signal toggle buttons can be accessed from the front. I can see the case being made for both orientations, however. Really glad you managed to show the size difference between the Koryuu and the OSSC, as this hasn't been showcased anywhere prior to this video. I was waiting for your video before making a decision, and will likely pick one up after seeing what future firmware updates will hold.

I used mine on a toshiba crt with a really bad comb filter that had major chroma delay, introducing tons of color bleed. Using the koryuu as a way to bypass my tv's comb filter through its component ports, it got rid of most of the color bleeding, and looks great for what it is.

Nice review, but you really should have tried the Koryuu+OSSC in generic sampling mode rather than trying to dial in optimal sampling, especially for composite video. With generic sampling it should be capable of results just as good as the RetroTINK solutions.

the optimal timings are what convinced me to buy the koryuu. The N64 quality via s-video is comparable to the Ultra HDMI mod and definitely already beats out RBG modded N64 with generic timings.

Perfect device for me...and ordered. Thanks for the review. I am one that uses the OSSC and Retrotink for vintage computers...not consoles. All of the RGB computers (Amiga, ST, etc) work great with the OSSC. But, there are a few (Atari 800, C64, Vic) that either use chroma/luma (s-vid) or composite. I have been using a Retrotink for these and while great, I would like to use these connections with the OSSC benefits. I have been waiting for something like this for a while!

NGL, the design of the case looks sleek af.. One use I could imagine buying this for would be to get a VCR onto a TV that doesn't accept composite natively.

4:48 The main reason I'm looking at the Koryuu, is my 13 inch 2004 Sony Wega Trinitron KV-13FS110, doesn't have a S-Video input, only coax, composite and component.

For watching, yes. Video capture is a bit more complicated with 480i and there isn't an easy answer; It all depends on your capture card setup.

Here's a video sample of a VHS movie using component output, it's also been properly de-interlaced and converted to true progressive footage using 3:2 pulldown reversal to get 23.98p out of the analog NTSC (525/2:1/59.94) signal from the VHS tape: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7ichLeinLquiok.html

@@furiousfox7712 thank you! Ive been researching online and was getting more confused. With the RetroTink do I also need to buy special cables like the HD Retrovision ones? Or can I use stock. It's frustrating because I have several older consoles to connect and I want to make sure I get the most bang for my buck.

You can make sandwich and connect them with six 90° adapters. I need something like this with rgb scart out for commodore monitors without composite.

If I want to use an NES and N64 with this, will it automatically detect which console is powered on and convert that signal to component? (like, if I have both systems plugged into the Koryuu at the same time - NES in composite, N64 in S-video)

No, you'll have to press the button to toggle between the inputs.

@@RetroRGB noooooooooo... :( A main selling point is that this can be used to integrate composite/s-video sources into an automatic component switch setup (like the gcomp switch), but if it can't automatically switch between composite and s-video then I'd have to buy one Koryuu for my NES and one for my N64 to keep the seamless console switching :( ...oh well, thank you for your response nonetheless

Are you referring to the phase degree adjustment at 2:45? It is an adjustment to the regen. pixel clock of the OSSC and is the last step once you do the sync and low pass filter. If you don't use optimal timings and just use the generic, which are still great on the OSSC, you don't need to do this. Every console - literally - will have a different phase IME, so you'll have to adjust them on your own hardware if you use FBX's profiles, tho using the grid on the 240p test suite like Bob is doing here makes it a quick adjustment!

3:45 Does the HDMI-to-YPbPr Converter add lag or distort the signal? In the first RetroTINK-2x Video, Mike recommend using a HDMI to VGA (passive?) converter and use the VGA-In on the OSSC instead of the Component in. Is the setup shown here beneficial?

Excellent question - Zero lag (less than 1ms, so we can consider it 'zero') and as long as you get one with the right chip, the signal is fine. Also, the OSSC doesn't allow for a low-pass filter on the VGA port, which means the signal will look cleaner through the component video port. I'll have a more detailed video on this soon.

I'm sorry, I was under the impression that I could simply get an S-video splitter to YPb in a gcompsw and plug that into the retro-tink to get S-video from my n64 to an HDMI port. Is this not the case?

I've never tried that. If it works, there's no "signal conversion" going on though - You're just using the YPb connectors to pass an S-Video signal, then need to wire it properly on the output end.

Find yourself a used, but really high quality composite & S-Video switch on eBay. Not the $20 Radio Shack junk, stuff that used to be "pro" gear that you can find cheap these days.

It should, as almost all Extron switches are compatible with the YPbPr component video this outputs.

can i use this to plug a c64 straight into a sony bvm? Do I need any extra cables or hardware or is this it? I run my devices via bnc through an Extron switcher.

You'd only need RCA to BNC adapters, which are really cheap.

I think a lot of amiga and commodore consoles cap out at composite and svideo...oh and my FM Towns Marty. I think I'll pick this up at some point :)

I have one off the AliExpress versions of this and it works great. And the Chinese version can be stacked underneath the OSSC since they have the same dimensions. The Chinese “add on board” also has scart output. The Koryuu doesn’t.

But it’s a clone. So it’ll probably stop working in a year. Also, please don’t support clone companies - Funding them for this gives them the budget to steal other people’s things.

Hello Bob. I currently have a Retrotink 2x Pro. I'm looking at getting a OSSC. I'm running all my system through S-Video. Would the koryuu be a better option. It will remove the need for the converter. Thanks

It all depends on how you plan on using the OSSC. If you'd just like to "set it and forget it", then keep the TINK2x Pro and just get an HDMI to component converter. It'll look awesome. ...but if you want to use custom timings, tweak based on TV/Capture card, etc, then the Koryuu should allow for a bit more control.

I'd recommend the RetroTINK2x or 2x Pro. For RF, get a cheap, old VCR, connect the RF to that and output composite to the TINK2x.

The RF signal or cable is basically useless in the retro gaming community because of its fuzziness and graininess in picture quality.

My CRT has component but no S-video. Should I buy this transcoder? Or should I use my RetroTINK with an HDMI to component converter in passthrough? Which option will give me the better picture?

If you already have a RetroTINK, it'll be much cheaper to just pick up an HDMI to Component Video converter. Light guns definitely won't work with the RetroTINK though. @@RetroRGB Thanks for the reply. My only concern with using these HDMI to component converters is the resolution. Do these support 240p? Or is the lowest resolution 480i? Since I’m going to a CRT TV, will this interlace my 240p content? What happens if I set the RetroTINK to passthrough?

@@chchris25 it’s really hard to say since I don’t own this converter but my guess is that it will interlace 240p content to form into 480i. To answer your second question, when you set your retrotink to passthrough when 240p content is fed through, then it will simply just passthrough 240p without making any picture modification.

There’s really only one step to getting SCART output out of the Koryuu and that is converting it. Just get a component to SCART adapter and it should work. That’s really the only possible way to get the SCART output out of the Koryuu.

And yeah, also because RGB mods don't exist for certain consoles, some are even a struggle to get to composite, such as the SG-1000 model 1 or anything on the first-gen of consoles. If I could, I would RGB everything, but it's just not possible.

The only thing I find ugly about the Koryuu is that the output ports are not in the right order, in that they are arranged as "PrYPb" instead of "YPbPr". This creates the impression that the Koryuu converts composite and S-Video into RGsB over RCA cables. While I can understand it for OSSC (where I would presume RGsB is the main use case and YPbPr is a bonus, since the OSSC's other inputs are that way), it is somewhat of a usability issue as not all component cables can change the order of the RCA plugs flexibly. (The YPbPr cable that I connect to my OSSC is noticeably straining because the RCA plug for Pr has to "cross over" the other two, which makes it very difficult to insert without damaging the cable.)

Yes, this a bit painful for some usage scenarios. The connector is the same as in the OSSC to allow for a stacked setup. The firmware can be modified to output RGsB, and it should also be possible to reassign the mapping of DACs to components to some extent to allow for different connector assignments. However, this doesn't fix the fact that the connectors themselves are color-coded in a certain way.

the quality of the product is great but i can't help but think the target market for it are the very same people who are already dedicating a lot of money to this hobby and would just hold off till they could afford an rgb mod solution for the few consoles this device serves.

I want to dump NES ROMs off my NES Game Cartridges (even Homewbrew ROMs that you can't find it on the internet) without illegally downloading ROMs off the internet. Is there any easy to use NES ROM Dumping Tools that you've recommended the most?

My only dislike is that it converts these signals to component which is mildly annoying enough that I just bought a retrotink pro over it and decided to just add another line doubler to my setup on top of the OSSC. I'm sure it works very well and all but unplugging and re-plugging in component wires is kind of annoying when you have more than two machines that use component while scart is certainly takes less effort to manage and less clutter.

Basically.... The device is not finished yet. It is like buying a beta or test release? Second. How long do CRT's keep working these days? The only device you will want to buy, is a device that converts into HDMI. That is the most future proof solution these days.

God I can remember when shmups claimed we'd just be splitting hairs at this point, but now I'm seeing this is where the new battle ground in video superiority is being drawn. That point was clearly the ossc.
