Almost 4 years later, and Pharrell is spot on. We're now in 2021 and everything has evened out. Lyrical rap is doing fine and so is vibe rap

scott vener isnt even attempting to understand what pharrell is saying. in the late 70s disco took over because people just wanted to feel good, and eventually it was crushed by punk and new wave and experimental music. thats exactly whats going to happen today with the feel good party music. despite this, you can still have a good time with disco, and you can have a good time with new radio music. culture shifts and changes naturally, and like pharrell said, the only thing we can do is be appreciative of the fact we live in a diverse, rapidly shifting time in music.

pharrell has the right perspective. attitude of a true artist. keep an open mind, don't be so rigid on any standard of music because any limitation is counter productive in what makes great art.. flylo is a living legend because of his unique sound that separated him from the popular group, and to do that you need to disregard the user manual and allow yourself to veer and venture off for a bit.

From a genuine fan of conversation, Scott and Pharrell have beautiful connection when it comes to talking about music. Bringing The Magic and the Science of music together to explore the beauty on both sides, while keeping their Individuality. I think thats the essence of Duality.

Type of music style never dies! History repeats itself. As Pharrell was saying, "It is about change", but we don't have to let anything die. Like Prince music will continue to live forever in someone's Vinyl, disc or Itunes. I believe there will be a surge of underground rappers who will hit those flows and beats including producers. We see old trends come in style already but I don't want to lump genre of music into a "trend." We just have to be open to celebrate the old, today and future. I'm an oldie when it comes to music. All this started with my Pops playing 8 tracks and vinyls of 70s music like Al Green, EW&F, Marvin Gaye, etc.

I've never really heard Pharrell speak his mind. He just so concisely and calmly rebutted Vener's commonly-held view on current music. I just thought he was another power vocalist in the industry - but holy crap the mans a musical SAGE.

I feel like Flylo has the potential to reach out to the mainstream in the future. Every album he's put out has gotten bigger and bigger every time, attracting more artists to work with him like Snoop Dogg, Thom Yorke and Herbie frickin' Hancock! He's doing this while still staying fresh with each project and appealing to a wider audience. I say this as a Flying Lotus fan but to me, he seems to be growing the way an artist should grow. He's in a bit of a limbo at the moment, not underground but not quite mainstream either. But i think he could eventually go all the way and leave an impact on the future of mainstream Hip Hop.

I feel like Flylo is right on this one. He doesn't get to speak much, but when he does, he mediates and agrees with both. He iterates: Things are more accepted now, you can not say shit and just feel it, or be super lyrical. Shit changes, some good, some bad depending on your standing withing it all. Most of it is temporary, and it will shift back. And though things are shifting, the shifts are period and have been repeated before.

Love these conversations. They're fantastic. So intellectual. So engaging. Love P's connection to James Brown and how he did the same sort of things with Adkins and spewing nonsense lots of the time. James Brown just felt what was right and did it on the spot. "The Payback" is a great example of it. Basic baseline, melody, and lyrics, but other than that, he just says what he wants to, following the flow and direction of the song.

Since music changed during those times, our understanding and relation to "feeling" for what we listen to has also changed, and it will continue to change for future generations.

I mean the early stages of hip-hop were all about rocking the party and getting people to dance and have a good time. It's no different than what you hear on the radio today. Things haven't really changed that much. Music that gets you hype has always been popular, from that early disco-rap, to 2 Live Crew, Digital Underground, to Puffy, to the No Limit era, to Lil Jon, right on through to the Fetty Wap's you hear now. And I do love the lyrical driven hip-hop of the golden age, but there still are great lyricists today. It might not be in the mainstream as much as it was in '94, but it's there right at your fingertips. It's easier than ever to find good music through the internet so you can find whatever style you like. Great time for music.

The way I see these "Mumble rap" artists or soundcloud rappers is like avant garde music. Jack the Dripper is essentially not very talented but his art was innovative and well received. Art in all mediums changes, and some artists push the extremes to where it makes you question whether something is good or not... All credit to the Based God, Lil B for being the moon to create the current waves.
