Q-Tip and A Tribe Called Quest, who are two hip hop artists (Tribe is a group) that use lots of jazz sounds in their production

A month late but here's the long version: Pharrell and Chad had recently moved their Star Trak record label off Jive over to (I believe) Virgin or Interscope. In the process they were absolutely adamant about bringing Clipse with them because thats their friends/original find. So this led to the whole Clipse/Jive/label saga which lasted for about 5+ years. Now when it came time for the 'FutureSex/LoveSounds' sessions, obviously Justin wanted to work with the Neptunes again but, as he was signed to Jive, this was a murky situation. There was apparently a lot of talk between The Neptunes and Jive trying to negotiate through this situation where they would still work on the Justin project but Pharrell saw this as a opportunity to get The Clipse off of Jive. Before you think that this was an ego thing, I read in an interview where Pharrell directly told Berry Weis (CEO of Jive Records at the time) that he will personally do the whole Justin Timberlake project FOR FREE in exchange for the Clipse to be free from their contract and still got rejected. So in short, it was label politics. Its crazy how these things work in the industry but I find it super fascinating, hence the long version of the story.
