I've been reading Waylon Jennings' autobiography and wanted to share this story. Waylon was friends with George Jones. This is the story of the night George got way too drunk and started tearing up Waylon's house. It's also a story about how Waylon and Johnny Cash helped George Jones out of a terrible financial situation. All of these stories are straight out of the book.

What's your favorite George Jones song? I'm partial to The Grand Tour, White Lightnin, Why Baby Why and The Window Up Above just to name a few. I could go on forever, but I won't. What's your favorite?

George had so many great songs. “Choices” is a great one that not only gets overlooked but has a great message. Talking about prices for concerts: I went to see George Jones twice and it didn’t cost a dime. They gave my money back both times when George failed to show.

White Lightning and The Race Is On are probably my favs. ... Also heard a duet a while back that I enjoyed & got a chuckle from - Let's Invite Them Over (w/ Melba Montgomery). ... Heard it on a Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour CD which came along with his album Together Through Life back when it was released in 2009. ... Love the intro Bob gives to the song...with his rant on modern country music. - Thanks for yet another entertaining upload 👍 .... ✌️ ....... Waylon has been my favorite for many years. Had a chance to meet him Oct 9th, 2000 in Hinckley, MN and he signed my Fender Waylon Tribute Guitar. To top it off, Reggie Young asked to see it and played a little on it in the casino lobby. The limo that was supposed to pick him up was running late, so I got to visit with him for about 45 minutes. Talked about a variety of things. When I asked for a picture with him, he told my wife to get into the photo with us. He said "We'd better get some beauty in here". Not sure what I'm more proud of, that he kinda classified me as the same kind of ugly as him, or that he thought I had a beautiful wife :) The thing I always thought was kinda funny, was Jessi was there in a big hat and sunglasses like she was trying to hide her identity, but Waylon just sat there in the middle of the hallway outside the gift shop in his wheel chair, black hat , cut off denim shirt, and black slacks that had pulled up a little showing off a pretty impressive pair of boots. Keep the Waylon (and other) stories coming. I've read that book a few times and you are right, it really is a great read.

If you love George Jones, how can you pick just one song? He stopped loving her today became real to me when my wife of 33 years passed away. When I wanted to let it all out, instead of going and getting drunk or something, I sat on my computer and played sad country songs. This was always at the top of the list. I do have to say though, before this happened, my favorite song was If Drinking Don't Kill Me. "I lay my head on the wheel, and the horn begins honkin'. The whole neighborhood knows, I'm home drunk again." What a word picture!

First things first, Waylon has been my all time Favs since the early 70's. My parents had mercantile business, cafe and Chevron store on the reservation up northern Arizona. I spent the week putting up Waylon Jennings concert posters and after I got off the bus after school, lo-n-behold A big ole bus had pulled up in front my parents business. I dropped my school books about 3 or 4 times racing to get inside the store to see if he was in there, he was but my mom had him by the vest pocket escorting him out telling him go sleep it off and stop his cursing. Damn, my heart sank, but that night my buddy and I snuck into the concert at the community center! I was about 12 back then and I had the time of my life. Waylon was kind enough to apologize to my folks and from then on he parked his bus near the cattle pen whenever he was doing concerts on the reservation. He loved Arizona, the surrounding Indian reservations and every kid on the reservation wanted to be Waylon, Johnny Cash or any CW musicians who ventured out that way.

I've probably read that book ten times. It's such a great read. His late son Terry (RIP) wrote a really good book too. It's called "Waylon: Tales of My Outlaw Dad".

Hank Jr. Called Waylon Ole Walktashi, that means number one in native Indian. Waylon has always been that to me, number one of all my favorite people I look up to as hereos. He was much more than a singer too me. He is like my hereo, father, singer, brother, friend that I never met but completely understand. No person has affected me like Waylon. I believe his every word like a trusted soilder listening to a General. I love Waylon, thank God he was able to tell his story in songs and life.

Great video! "Liked" and subscribed! I'm always happy to hear anything and everything Waylon Jennings! I wasn't born until '77, but ever since I heard Waylon's guitar picking every Friday night in the early 1980s at the beginning of every "Dukes of Hazzard" episode, I've been a fan!

My first ever music concert was Waylon Jennings at the Williams Lake Stampede in 1976. I was twelve years old. He’s been my favourite ever since. I even managed to live his wild lifestyle for a few years in the 80s touring around the club scene in Western Canada. I don’t know how those guys lived like that for as long as they did. It’s not a winning strategy, to say the least. Legends! They’re different than the rest of us.

I never liked any country Music until I heard hank Williams jr and he turned me on to waylon jennings in 2002 when I was about 20 and now I believe waylon jennings is the king of country, but it's sad I missed it but these stories make me feel like I was there and your tell is spot on .

I enjoyed your comments on Waylon. I read this autobiography while I was doing time in Bossier Parish Louisiana in 2017. I grew up on Waylon in the 80's, thanks to my daddy, riding around listening to 8 track tapes. Waylon is my all-time favorite country music singer and I miss that ole outlaw tremendously. You asked to name my favorite song by George....."He Stopped Loving Her Today" would be that song. I feel a slight connection to George seeing that I'm from Shreveport, La. and that George was married to Nancy Sepulvado. I was went to Southwood High School and was good friends with Nancy's daughter Sherry Sepulvado.

I was 16 in a bar Lafayette la fixing to get on an offshore oil rig because I had a child on the way anyway these old men I was drinking w got me pretty hammered and I went over to the jukebox and looked down and thought I saw Waylon Jenkins anyway my son was born a wk after I turned 17 in 79 and now my son Waylon Wright jenkins is an evangelist after living most of his life like Waylon jennings

The story I heard about George playing ahead of Elvis on the Louisiana Hayride was that Elvis just had a couple of songs that became hits. George decided to do Elvis' songs ahead of him. When Elvis heard him doing his set basically he told his band, that they would do gospel songs that night instead. When Elvis talked to George later, George said he forgot what it was like to have a hit and wanted to play some hit songs.

I think my favorite of the George Jones songs is Just One More. I've heard a couple of versions but his delivery of that tune still is hypnotic. George Jones was an absolute original and I am surprised that it took me so long to really hear his message. Great story thanks.

Always liked Waylon's music and would very much like to hear more stories about him and his music. One of George Jones tunes I really liked was Who is going to fill their shoes. Great message in that tune. Unfortunately we have been losing too many lately and I'm not happy with alot of country music these days. Sounds like pop music. There was a time back in the early 70's this same thing was happening. Then Waylon came and saved us.

I just came upon this video! Please, tell more Waylon stories! Please! I’m one of his biggest fans. At 15, I started collecting his LPs. I’m currently at 48 original albums right now. I even share the same birthday as Waylon, except the year. I was on the moon when I find out his birthday was the same as mine lol. Listening to Waylon got me through so many things in my life. I miss him dearly. People aren’t speaking about Waylon enough as they should be. There’s so much there for the world to discover. He was real, his music was real, and he showed me so much thru his songs. He’s my first musical love. My hero! May he Rest In Peace. I really appreciate your video and kind words of him. Oh I’ve got to find this Waylon book. Love these Waylon stories, George Jones was a loaded pistol when he was drunk, read his biography and remember him shooting holes in his tour bus floor when he was on a bender. Favorite George songs are White Lightning, The Window Up Above, Choices, The King Is Gone And So Are You, The Corvette Song and of course He Stopped Loving Her Today.

I read the Jones bio, appropriately titled. (I Lived to Tell It All). Remember how the guys bought kiddy band-aids to cover the bullet holes, and the driver split the scene at a truck stop! Vacuuming up the coke at the barber shop was a good one too. Man. Saw him twice late in his sober career. Good shows.

I have to say "Trouble man" is my favorite Waylon song. The first song I learned to play on a guitar, I did not try until I was 40 was the cover of the Bob McDill song "Amanda". My wife had to suffer through my tone deaf attempts until it sounded a tiny bit like it should. I believe it was Willie who told the story about the dynamite Waylon had in the school bus and the bar owner who wouldn't pay them. I may have that all mixed up but that is my favorite Waylon story, if I screwed that up I blame it on being 72 and about half crazy.

Great stories...glad I came across your channel. Choices...is one of my favorite George Jones songs. A few years after I had a chance to meet him through some good folks in South Georgia... I was driving on hwy 98 in Florida late afternoon...heard it on the radio for the first time...made the hair on my arms stand straight up. Had to of been 1999 or 2000

For what it's worth, Waylon didn't drink alcohol. It says so a few times in the book and I've heard that quite a few times over the years. We've all heard it. I said that George and Waylon were getting drunk and I shouldn't have. I meant they were getting loaded, stoned, plastered or whatever. It's all synonymous to me, because I've never been a drinker. All apologies to everyone.

Well hell they had really good pills back then that probably made 100 proof whiskey look like bud light, throw all those uppers, downers etc..on top of heavy drinking and blow your bound to get floored lol. And no Coke doesn’t last long, never cared for it myself, too sweaty. Didn’t know Waylon had a book anyway, I’ll have to check that out soon! Oh and favorite Jones song....gosh..hard to pick one but the original ‘cup of loneliness’ is a great one, bartender‘s blues, and a good old spiritual number ‘farther along’. Among many others

Otis, George Jones- "I lived to tell it all" is a must read. I believe Waylon isn't exaggerating about that story. I have a 45 of Thumper Jones. George dipped in to a little rockabilly early on his career as you mentioned. Love the stories, keep'em coming.

I have that book, but haven't read it, Todd. I know it's supposed to be pretty dark and I've been doing my best to avoid whatever unnecessary darkness I can at the moment. So, it might be a while before I get to it. : )

Like many writers, artists, and musicians their creative work is usually separate from their personal life. As for the African proverb, as an old man myself I would rather have my memorial library be set free than burn down. :) The album that put Waylon Jennings on my radar was 'Wanted! The Outlaws', a compilation album by Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter, and Tompall Glaser, released by RCA Records in 1976 Thank you for telling stories for us on your channel.

These stories mean a lot. Especially because I live in South Africa, so getting access to these books and stories are impossible. I am a huge country music fan and more specifically all of the Highwaymen. My favourite George Jones song would probably be a toss up between She Thinks I Still Care and He Stopped Loving Her Today.

I read this book a few years ago. It is bare to the bone. Superb read. 👍 Waylon’s life would make a great movie. I remember that Waylon wrote in the book that he did not care for Merle Haggard and his bunch after loosing money in a card game that Waylon thought Haggard’s bunch had cheated. My favorite Jones song is “Grand Tour.” My favorite George and Tammy duet is “Golden Ring” which summarizes marriage perfectly for so many people.

That is awesome Waylon and Johnny taking care of George's living situation. I believe that's the perfect reason to be the best version that you can be. If you are making great money and want for nothing and are able to do those type things there is no better feeling. That happens here and there from people I'm sure we all know, but that's great! My favorite George Jones song is ( Who's gonna fill there shoes ) . My wife's is ( Choices ). I always like to hear stories about Waylon. I even named one of my sons Waylon.

Wow, very entertaining video. I only found it because KZfaq recommended it to me, but I'm very glad it did; it's always fun to hear about these stories, and all the crazy things they did, and it's also so true the thing you said about losing all this history to time. Not only the things that the big stars like George Jones, Waylon Jennings and so on did, but it's also kind of sad to think about the thousands of country singers that didn't "make it" whose songs faded into obscurity never to be heard again. Luckily we got the Internet, so that the music of these lesser known singers is still available which I very much appreciate. Guys like Sonny Burns, Ernie Ashworth and Larry Heaberlin for instance are good examples of great singers who never got the fame they deserved. Anyway, now I'm just kind of rambling, but I'll end this comment by saying that my favorite George Jones song probably is "Rest In Peace" or "Wild Irish Rose", but it's honestly very tough to pick out a single song since he had so, so many great ones. Definitely looking forward to more videos from you; thanks for posting these stories.

That's a great book. I bought my copy used at a book store for eight dollars and gave it away free at a drum circle where I sell antique bottles I dig. Like I said about a story you told that I read first in a Peter Guralnick book, it's better hearing it from you. The story about Merle Haggard taking advantage of a wasted Waylon at a poker game was particularly sad. I figured they were lifelong friends but that seemed to sour their relationship. My favorite George Jones song is The Grand Tour.

I met George Jones at a café in a little East Texas town many years ago he was very nice and polite but once George hit the bottle a demon was unleashed. In my mind the greatest country singer of all time.

There are so many great George Jones songs, but the one that has always moved me the most is "WHO'S GOING TO FILL THEIR SHOES". Like the song says, "There will never be another......". The list is long, and growing longer with each passing year.

Wayne Kemp- One of the Greatest Country Singers ever who never received the acclaim that equaled his talent. Wayne had also played lead guitar for George in the 1960's.I heard a George Strait interview where he mentions what a great singer Wayne Kemp was. Remember the late Wayne Kemp. George Jones and Conway Twitty both recorded songs written by Wayne Kemp and Mack Vickery. Waylon and Mack Vickery were friends and Waylon recorded several of Mack's songs.

George Jones kicking “The Duck” off of the bus and then making them turn the bus around and go back to pick him back up- was one of the craziest and my favorites!

I coincidentally discovered that show earlier today, KZfaq algorithm did its job for sure. I was looking up Jerry Reed videos lead me to this channel and intern I saw a clip on you tube of Mike Judge Presents Tales From the Tour Bus. I agree its a must see for anyone who loves Mr. Gibbs stories complete with eye witness accounts. its great, interesting, and funny as hell!!

I have read Waylon's autobiography and I don't remember that George Jones story at all, but there are so many stories about George being drunk as a skunk. I recommend the Tammy Wynette biography.

I recently finished Waylon's book. I agree with your assessment. I had read Willie's 2016 biography prior to that. Seems like Waylon was willing to go deep and didn't shy away from pointing out his flaws. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. On the other hand, Willie's is almost superficial. Definitely written with the adage, "keep it at an 8th grade reading level." Not faulting Willie, that may be the way the publisher wanted it. Willie wasn't afraid to poke at himself either. It's just that it felt like it only went as deep as the shallow end of a giant pool. Seems like I already knew a lot of the stories in the book.

'74 with the band, excellent show by both and together. In the 80s -90s sometime with gene e, the best I ever saw him both shows were in Memphis, tn

This was an awesome story! I know all the names that people say are the best cowboy singers, and I don't disagree, but Waylon is my favorite. His voice has gotten me through some real tough times, and you can tell its done the same for him. Probable a tad more than me. Haha. As always brother, thank you.

@@otisgibbs I contacted Alr Devils and they said they are no longer hosting the Townes Tribute Show. They further said they checked around and haven’t found anyone else putting the show on. I guess maybe due to covid it’s cancelled this year.
