This is my experience with having Otosclerosis and having a Stapedectomy surgery. I hope it helps anyone else who is going through the same thing. This is a very rare condition and it needs to be talked about and shared.

Thank you so much. You can't imagine how much you're helping people. I don't know what will happen to me. I recently got a job in a hospital and I diagnosed with otosclerosis 5 years back. Right now my condition is just like yours 50% & 60% loss in left and right ears. My HOD is suggesting me to go for the surgery as I work in that hospital they're assuring me that they'll do their best. But still I'm nervous.

Hi Andrea, So glad I came across your video. At the age of 45 I just had this procedure done to my left ear. I started suffering from hearing loss in my early 30s. I went thru slight depression and withdrawal in the beginning because I tried to avoid Negative energy. I can truly relate to your story and so happy that you got help at an early age. I can't wait for the doctor to take out packing, i know it's going to be a tearful experience. Much 💛 Tanya

@Birboot My hearing improved more than 50% in both ears and now almost have normal hearing decimal range without hearing devices. It is some getting used to because everything is louder so you have to adjust. My advice is to find ENT doctor that you feel comfortable also confirming your diagnosis with MRI. That is what made me feel okay and he was recommended. I hope this helps. Note my second suegery was done about 6mos apart from 1st one. 🙏

I'm so glad you made this video. I wondered what the post-op would be like, so having your testimonial is wonderful. I found myself nodding the whole way through your description of what it's like pre-surgery. Did everyone get some insidious global memo and decide to start mumbling?? Even though I don't read lips or anything like that, the worst is when you're talking to someone, and they nonchalantly turn around for some reason as they're talking. They lost me right then and there! I was diagnosed with otosclerosis last month. When I found out this was actually treatable, I was ecstatic! I thought I was going to have to live the rest of my life without hearing well or dependent on hearing aids. I'm going to do the surgery in July (after some summer travel). I hope you post follow-up videos to show how things are going or after your second surgery.

tinawilk I’m so excited for you! Do your travels and have fun! It makes a world of a difference with just one ear. I though the same thing that I was going to have to have hearing aids for the rest of my life but thankfully not now! I will say I’m somewhat glad this happened to me because I have a better understanding of how important it is to make eye constant with people that you’re talking to and I feel more confident speaking to strangers now because I can hear or speaking in a group of people. Love love love that this helped you and it’s only up from here for you!!

There is so much to your story I can relate to, it's remarkable. I was literally diagnosed yesterday after ten years of putting up with it as best I could. Initially a doctor actually went in and operated because I had broken my nose with very severe facial trauma a year prior and he felt that the impact had probably dislodged the middle ear bones and he could set things straight. The operation however was not very successful, probably because he was not going in looking to fix otosclerosis, thinking it was something else. For the first 6-7 years it was manageable. Audiologists had only ever said that I had a hearing loss, & therefore needed hearing aids. My response was 'I can't afford them', & I never pressed anyone further for any more information, like why I was going deaf in the first place. I just assumed I had listened to music too loud when younger or that my facial injury had done permanent damage to my ear. Three years ago, the tinnitus started, and things started to get really bad. I noticed that what was previously a problem with one ear was now affecting both, and now any sound coming in had to be loud enough to get over the ringing in my ears as well. I have to watch telly with subtitles. Music at full volume, etc. I agree also that people sadly have little patience for you when you are deaf, so I have withdrawn a lot more socially, & work is becoming a struggle. I will be contacted soon by a doctor who will hopefully operate, it encourages me greatly to hear how surgery made a massive difference to you. Thanks for your video.

@@nikl4525 Hi, sorry for the lateness of my reply. It took three operations in the end. The first one highly successful, and then two operations to get the other ear right. My hearing is still not perfect but has improved out of sight compared to how it was prior to the operations. The tinnitus has all but gone, and I hear everything pretty much as well as anyone else of my age does. Highly recommend the surgery.

My original visit to an ENT was not great and my condition was very poorly explained. So now, 6 years later I saw a wonderful ENT who fully explained my condition and drew pictures. I am 2 weeks post op of having a stapedectomy on my second ear... The first op 13 years ago, I had severe vertigo which eventually subsided and my hearing restored to almost "normal". The second procedure went very well, no vertigo, normal post op dizziness. My hearing has already improved even as it is still healing, I fully expect it to improve over the next couple of weeks. It's life changing!!!Thanks for posting, I have never met anyone else with this condition :)

Hello I just had my surgery on March 1st 2021 everything went well I had the most amazing care in UCDAVIS HOSPITAL by doctor Diaz So far I think it worked (I still have some dressing inside) but I do hear already ,the first two days the vertigo was horrible but is going away now . I’m so thankful the nurse asked me about my previous experiences with anesthesia so she suggested a patch behind my left ear to avoid nausea and vomiting I was so concerned about that But that little patch solved my fear! 😃

Hello. I had my stapedectomy about a month ago. My hearing has been hugely improved since then and continues improving. But I have also been experiencing tinnitus the last few weeks. I'm hoping it is just part of the healing process or the gelfoam dissolving and will go away with time.

@@imail724 sorry to hear about your tinnitus. It would alarming if you never had it before. I had tinnitus prior to surgery and quite severely for the first week after. I'm in my second week of recovery now and it seems better this week. Tinnitus I can cope with, however, as long as my hearing is better. The trick is to accept it and not focus on it. What I am noticing this week is that my taste has gone funny and my tongue is a bit tingly - which can be normal due to them having to go near a nerve in surgery.

@@tlam3309 Thank you for the advice. I have noticed that oftentimes I "forget" about the ringing and life goes on as normal, but then I will remember it, think about it, and focus on it, and that can drive me crazy. @@keerthy_mogadati Hi there! Yep, my hearing has definitely improved by quite a lot! As I mentioned to someone else, it went from 10% to at least 80%. My experience was very positive. I went under in a flash and just stayed at the hospital for a few hours afterwards as the surgeon wanted to check on me. Recovery at home was fine, but the medications made me very drowsy and I had headaches all week. All I wanted to do was sleep, so you might find the same thing happens to you. I took my prescription as instructed, but found that I needed an extra dose of pain killers (paracetemol and ibuprofen) which really helped manage my headaches. I truly hope the results after your surgery will be massive and you'll have found it worth it. Good luck and let me know how things go!

Thanks for sharing the video, it's encouraging to hear success stories about this condition. I'm curious if you noticed any symptoms besides just hearing loss. For me I've been noticing reduced hearing for several years along with pulsatory tinnitus and occasional weird clicking sounds in my ear when i yawn or move my jaw around just right. I was diagnosed with otosclerosis just last week (thankfully only on the left side) and am waiting to hear from a surgeon about what my options are. Ive been reading what i can about the operation and have seen more than a few stories of people who have done it but the implant failed in some way after a few years. Also apparently there is a risk of puncturing the cochlea during the operation and losing hearing completely in that ear. Have you had any further hearing loss in the years since you had this done? Or recent hearing tests to conform everything's working properly?

Mainichi Japanese It’s so okay to be scared. We aren’t surgeons and how do we know that they won’t mess up? It’s the same as trusting someone to cut your hair. But you HAVE to. There’s so much sound that you’re missing out on planes, the ocean, conversations with people. I shut myself out too and I think that’s pretty common. It’s awful because no one understands like you do. Everything will be pretty loud for a week after but trust me it comes way down and it’s so comfortable. It’s hard to think that you couldn’t hear before the surgery. Hands down the best decision I’ve ever made in my life thus far and you will be okay and like I said in the video you DESERVE it. Your life will become so effortless when it comes to hearing especially working in retail. It’s a game changer!

Hi Andrea. Thanks so much for taking time to explain all this. I have been experiencing pressure in my right ear and some ringing off and on over the course of a year or so. It’s just hard to hear people in a crowded restaurant or conversations in noisey places. I finally made an ENT appt today and an audiologist tested my hearing. I think everything was pretty good but my right ear had some minor hearing loss with low tones. I thought FOR SURE they were going to say I have ear wax build up because it just feels like when you fly and the pressure is built up and you hold your nose and blow to pop your ears open. It will pop some but for the most part my symptoms are mainly the feeling of a clogged ear with some pressure. No pain just always there and I can hear ringing and my voice inside my head when I talk or sing. The ENT doctor said both my ears were absolutely clean with no wax. So he could find no reason other then otosclerosis. He wants me to come back in 6 months to see how it progresses. My thing is you had significant hearing loss. I don’t. What other symptoms did you have? Mine is mostly uncomfortable mild pressure but nothing horrible. Just bothersome. Also can you tell me more about the surgery. You said it was 4 hours. So 4 hours is rather long under anesthesia. Did you feel bad or sick or weird or dizzy upon waking up? Was there any pain after? I just don’t know if this is what I have for sure. I want to get a second opinion. I read the surgery can cause permanent deafness Thoughts on all this? I’m so glad this worked so well for you. You were brave. Thanks. Theresa
@andreamartin6841
@andreamartin6841 6 жыл бұрын
pagerus Hi Theresa! I think you should get a second opinion, or maybe another hearing exam. With otosclerosis it’s pretty easy to tell if you have it with a hearing exam because it’s a “conductive” hearing loss. So during the test when they put the sound directly through your ear canal you hear less than when they put the sound behind your ear (on the lower back of your skull). With otosclerosis you’ll never be completely deaf because you’re not hearing through your ears you’re bypassing that and hearing with the bones in your face or skull. It’s kind of crazy but it’s because it’s a middle ear problem. I’m not sure if you have otosclerosis if they couldn’t tell. You may have a different type of hearing loss that you’ll need hearing aids for. But if you do get another hearing test, make sure they do a conductive hearing test as well and it may help to rule somethings out. The surgery itself only took and hour and a half. I said four hours total so I had to be there at 6:30 and I was out by 9:30. But only under for and hour and a half. Waking up I wasn’t in any pain, my throat hurt a little and she gave me some water. I had my dad help me to the car and out when we got home because I was still pretty slow, maybe a little dizzy, after the surgery. They gave me pain killers for the week but I don’t do well on them so I just took Tylenol and it was just fine. Not much pain just some aching. After about four days it’s just itchy from the packing because all the fluids have dried up and just like a scab, it itches. I had pressure in my ear and some ringing. Its only been a year since you’ve noticed and mine was progressively getting worse over like two and half years so in 6 months to a year you might see more of a change and it may worsen and then they’ll be able to tell exactly what is causing it. I really hope this helped and you figure out what exactly is going on!!
@andreamartin6841
@andreamartin6841 6 жыл бұрын
pagerus Oh! The permanent deafness part! So they only do one ear surgery at a time. They do one and then wait 3 or more months to do the second just to make sure the first one healed up nicely and there weren’t any complications. In my mind, every surgery has some kind of complications and I believe it’s only a 10 percent chance that it won’t work which yes would suck but it’s one of those things that you just have to be Positive Polly about. The first one worked for me, I have my second surgery next week and that one might not go as well but I’m choosing to take the small risk in hopes that I get the reward of my hearing back. 🤞🤞

Before I knew I had otosclerosis, I got up twice in the middle of movies in movie theaters looking for manager to say the following: “How do you expect anyone to understand the plot when the volume is so low??” I got dizzy looking at fish in aquariums, I got dizzy standing on docks, I thought people mumbled in meetings at work, I was disgusted at how “no one could enunciate,” etc. Until one day my husband thought I had an inner ear infection and thought I should see a doctor. Not hearing well is very different than not seeing well. Can’t blame not seeing well on others.

I first began noticing hearing loss during my early 30s - around 2006. I finally went to an ENT in 2014 and was diagnosed with otosclerosis. I use Oticon hearing aids (which cost me $7200). I tried many other hearing aids including Phonak - but, the other hearing aids didn't work for music. Pretty much I have to wear my hearing aids to hear people talking to me. I know the operation is typically very successful - but, I'm *really* sensitive to sound - so I don't want the operation (basically I'm worried I will not like the outcome).

Before I had that surgery, I already had moderate mixed hearing loss. I was hoping it would get better after the surgery. I wouldn't have known that if I hadn't had my hearing checked. Now after that my surgery, I had my hearing tested and the result is still the same. I'm wondering if you also had series of ear infections before your surgery. I'm kind of wondering if this surgery will help me improve my hearing. I suspect I also have this. I'm looking forward to your reply. Thanks.

JZ Cruz I never had ear infections, it just over time got worse and worse. I had 50% hearing in my left ear and now I have 90% hearing. I’m not familiar with the type of surgery you had for your ears but with otosclerosis it’s a conductive hearing loss. It’s supposed to be pretty easy to identify with just a hearing test. Basically I couldn’t really hear through my ear canal (like wearing ear plugs) , but even with ear plugs, as long as the sound is loud enough you’ll be able to hear something because the vibrations of the sound are hitting the bones in your nose or the back of your skull and sending that through your ear drum. It’s really crazy and I’m not a doctor but that’s the best explanation I can give you. Hope something out there can help you, good luck!

I think I have this condition, but my hearing loss is still minor. Even with the audiogram showing mild hearing loss I have bad tinnitus and seem to struggle at work and socially. My ears also ring post noise exposure like a normal person's would, but very exaggerated (e.g. after a concert, wearing ear plugs I will have roaring tinnitus for 3 days) , or talking on the phone for half an hour will worsen my hearing. :-( I wish they could do the procedure but I think they will refuse because my audiogram isn't too bad.

fairytae Don’t worry about it! You can go back after like 3 days. You just won’t have hearing on the one ear because of the packing.

Hi Alejandra, I just had surgery on my R ear 3 days ago. I’ve had almost no dizziness, except immediately after the surgery coming out of anesthesia. No nausea at all, no tinnitus except for the small amount o had before. I just took Tylenol and Ibuprofen for the first couple days, very little discomfort. I hope your surgery went well!

Did you experience any pain? I have otosclerosis only in 1 ear and my hearing on that ear has always been worse than on the other, BUT I am still in normal range. My problem is the pain that I sometimes get which is provoked by touching the ear or around it. Like something inside shifts and affects the whole area. Also some loud sounds can be painful.
