Research I did on this topic and discussion of other sources. This is a basic exploration of the topic, hopefully I can find more.

Fabulous detail on my current project 😊. Thanks for the book reference. I assume these numbers are just the breakdown for the Anatolian troops? As I understood it the Rumelian troops joined as the Porte regulars and Anatolians marched north from Constantinople.

the source mentioned the palace troops but not the Rumelian provincial divisions. I’ll take a look at other sources too and follow up

Just as a preliminary search I found Abdulkadir Efendi writes later on that “some from the sancaks of Belgrade, Izvornik [a Bulgarian province], and Bosnia were assigned.”

Interesting, @@Corvinuswargaming1444 . In Paradowski's book he has a chapter on the Ottoman strengths and refers to the works of previous historians who have studied the conflict. Two of these used primary source known as "Mustafa Naomi's chronicle". Not sure if this is a Polish/Ukrainian source? He sets out several possible breakdowns of the army in the Helion book.

@@fogh Mustafa Naima was the Ottoman official court historian (the first one to hold that office) in the early eighteenth century. His history was completed around 1704.

That's excellent. Thank you. I had not realised the use of mercenary troops was as prolific with the Ottomans. Lovely graphics. The picture of the Sultan is curious, quite a red tail and fetlocks on his horse. Was henna used to dye horses? Could be artistic licence, of course, but it would be an excellent way to make some command figures stand out.

Thanks for watching. The mercenaries were a little different than the contemporary European companies where you had independent officer-proprietors contracted by governments. The sekban troops tended to be recruited by the governors directly out of their funds or the provincial treasury, either in Anatolia or in Rumelia and Ottoman Central Europe. So while they were recruited by government official, having large sekban armies meant that the provincial rulers gained a lot of power. It also had the stabilizing effect of reducing pressure on the central treasury for military expenses. By the time of the 1664 Saint Gotthard for example the overall number of Janissaries decreased and the main infantry were these mercenary troops with muskets

It’s a Turkish tradition to bind the tail of one’s horse before battle, it signifies to the horse and others around that you are going to battle, the tie is made from the middle part of the tail, and in the unfortunate case of the horse riders death the tail is cut and placed at the tip of a spear, that spear will be placed at the Tomb of the deceased rider as a Tuğ. A horse with a a cut tail is seen as widowed and will not be ridden by anyone else, to come to the Henna part I’m not really sure but henna has multiple uses some do it for cosmetic reasons and some for symbolic reasons. The symbolic meaning is that the person with henna is marked as a sacrifice for (insert reason here)
