Have you read The Dark Angel by Mika Waltari? It is a novel about the fall of Constantinople, based on the account of Nicolo Barbaro who witnessed the fall first hand. Waltari also wrote a second novel that focuses heavily on the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent and these books inspired me to read more about the Ottoman Empire and contributed to me discovering your KZfaq channel.

Very interesting run through of the fall and conquest of Constantinople 👍. Would be interested on your thoughts on other major sieges. I guess Buda, Damascus, Jerusalem and Cairo all fell to the Ottomans, but were any of them besieged in the same way? Vienna survived two sieges - was it too far from the Ottoman centre of power to bring the logistics required to bear?
@Corvinuswargaming1444
@Corvinuswargaming1444 Күн бұрын
Damascus, Jerusalem, and Cairo were conquered as a result of defeating the Mamluk armies in field. Vienna was always a bit too far for the Ottomans to capture, the problem was not fully military but more demographic and economic. Much of Hungary was integrated into Ottoman administration after 1541 when the empire sidelined the Szapolyai family from acting as a tributary ruler, but Ottoman rule in Hungary was always contentious. If they had captured Vienna, which I think was militarily plausible during Süleyman’s reign, they probably would not have had much better luck trying to administer Austria. It took about three months to send an army from Constantinople to Central Europe, which is why a lot of the battles and sieges took place in the August through October season.

Nice update. Put me down a for a book! 👍 Suggestion on holding the figures for painting; use the putty to add them to plastic bottle tops. I have a good selection after only a small time. Coke and Pepsi type bottles are ideal. You can then either hold the bottle top or even put the bottle top in the GW holder. Once finished painting transfer figures to bases and reuse putty and bottle tops. I paint in 12s and have a few sets of bottle tops. The putty eventually needs replacing when it loses grip. 👍

That’s a good idea with the bottle tops, it will give a more stable surface than just the putty on the GW handle

That was fascinating. As you suggested, I had assumed like many people that the rise of the Ottomans was quite mechanical with each Sultan talking a bit more of the Byzantine Empire until just Constantinople was left, and that was finally taken. As ever it is more nuanced and therefore even more interesting! The approach to succession seems very messy, but then primogenitor doesn’t work out so great all the time either 😝.

I'm curious as to what has brought about the introspection on the future direction. If it's an apparent downturn in viewers or video penetration, then most of the You Tubers I know have reported similar this past month or so. As such, it might not be anything specific that you are doing, or not doing. Sometimes going back to basics helps. Why did you start the channel in the first place? Was it as a personal outlet, as a history platform or as a wargaming platform? Evident in this video is a focus on the history with the wargaming second. I'm an archaeology and history grad but I predominantly only dip into secondary sources these days to fuel my wargaming, not necessarily the other way round. My Ottoman interest is as 'just' another period and I don't see myself as developing the linguistic skills to access primary sources. A number of your wargaming viewers are likely the same but we are interested in what you read and extract. If you are interested in trying to find a balance between your interests I'd recommend you have a look at the videos of a friend of mine, Alex at Storm of Steel. He is a professional archaeologist but wargaming is his primary interest. His videos are not slick productions but they give a good balance, for me, of background history and wargaming. His focus is the World Wars in the main. He has some monetisation but it's unlikely to ever be his primary income. He has, however, built up a core audience who like his direct approach. I personally prefer your videos which achieve that balance of history and gaming. At the end of the day though, as other commenters have noted, you need to find the things that make you happy and content.

I think that the main difference between the earlier and later empires was the presence of Islam in the area. The people hated Islam and the death and destruction it brought so much that they were all willing to join together to rid themselves of the scourge. By the First World War, the people were able to think about their own governance free from the Islamic threat!
@Corvinuswargaming1444

at various times the people in the Habsburg Hungarian lands were collaborating with the Ottoman Empire, the same was true in Transylvania. Ottoman expansion was also not consistent, Süleyman for example avoided western campaigns for years at a time and his successors only opportunistically attacked West. After 1566 the next major conflict was not until 1591 to 1606, and then not again until 1663-64. The problem with the portrayal of Austria-Hungary in mostly popular history works is incorrect comparisons to Britain and France instead of its peers and neighbors with similar conditions like Poland-Lithuania, Russia, and the Ottoman Empire.

My opinion is that you should just do what you want. Most of the channels I watch regularly are small, hobbyists doing the things they have passion for. A few are 'professional' channels where the people are making a living off of it. The slick production values for hobby topics turns me off... for whatever reason. Unless you're really driven to make money off of YT vids I think the happy path is to just let yourself be guided by your whims and not overthink it.

Hey! I only just recently started getting into Oathmark. I've got a box of those elves sitting next to me, waiting to get started. Trying to decide on a color scheme that's not too bright. Eldar are/were my 40K faction of choice too... but I'm kinda glad GW has substantially ignored them. It makes for less scale-creep and they fit pretty well with older figures. Also, less of the 'overproduced' look I see on modern GW figures (festooned with little details).
