The Great War

The Great War

7 жыл бұрын

The Ottoman Army underwent considerable reforms after the losses on the Balkans. And under German influence, the military tried to bring the whole army up to the standards of modern war. In a lot of way, the results were decent or even good but supply problems led to a great variety in uniform quality across the 400 year old Empire.

The more you realize how under equipped and unmodern the Ottoman armies were, the more you appreciate and realize their soldiers bravery and courage to fight.

Phi6er I am simply saying that the Ottoman troops were very brave, however their government and some of their commanders were not so capable.

Phi6er Look I understand that from what you are saying, you clearly don't have a family history of military service to a country. And that's fine, many people don't. However I come from a family that has served and commanded militaries scents the Medieval ages. So are views may differ, however I would never call a man or women, willing to fight and die for their cause or beliefs an 'idiot'. I believe that is one of the highest honors one can receive, is to have sacrificed much for their beliefs whether or not I agree with them I highly respect anyone who is willing to die for their beliefs. Sometimes fighting for your country is the same as fighting for your beliefs, or even your rights as a human. While sure to some jumping of a cliff or running at machine guns without a weapon may seem dumb to some rather then bravery, what makes them brave is not what they did, but what they hoped to achieve by sacrificing so much. Every soldier can fight, many can fight well, but those who fight with bravery, shall be the true victors. For their cause doesn't die so easily, for their efforts ether succeed or succeed, for if they fail to achieve their goals then, others will see their sacrifice and strive to do the same.

+Phi6er I agree with your points. Throughout the history, many people who thought they were fighting for their "nation" were actually figting for "deranged old men." I personally don't even like the concept of "nation", it is like a huge make-believe game to me. However, in that particular case turkoman mentioned, the independency of their country was at stake. If they didn't fight they would've become an indirect colony sort of thing, which for obvious reasons isn't a pleasant thing for the people living in it. So I'd say what they did in the battle of gallipoli was a reasonable thing to do.

Besides the suitability was a important deficiency, they also had no choice to wear uniforms in good condition but wretched ones. Especially, if you consider that The Ottoman Empire was in an economic bottleneck at the time and heavy defeats in wars one after another. I even read that the local people of the regions were patching dead soldiers' uniforms to make them suitable for imminent, new fighters. I suggest you to read ''Resurrection - Canakkale 1915'' and ''Those Crazy Turks'' by Turgut Ozakman about this point.

You also have to consider its suitability for the environment. Sufficiently warm for cold conditions and keeping off the sun and keeping you cool for colder conditions. You should also look for materials that don't get heavy when wet.

I think the Ottomans did fairly well considering that the Ottoman Empire was described as the "sick, old man of Europe" prior to the war and lost both the Italo-Turkish War of 1911 and the First Balkan War of 1912, and what they were up against in The Great War itself. They had to fight Imperial Russia on one front, the British Empire with its Commonwealth and colonies in the Mediterranean, "Palestine" and Arabia - where they also were facing a huge Arab revolt and tried preventing a total collapse of their country. Then again the Ottoman Empire was partitioned at the end of the war and its perhaps fortunate for them that Russian Civil War became the main concern of the victorious allies and that Mustafa Kemal Ataturk managed to win the Turkish War of Independence - or else the Treaty of Sevres in 1920 would have been ratified reducing the remains of the Ottoman land to a small vassal state. Ok, I'd say the Greeks and Armenians probably wouldn't mind that...

On a sidenote the officer at 2:58 is the famous Huseyin Avni Bey, commander of the 57th Infantry Regiment. The 57th was the first Ottoman unit on the scene counterattacking the Allied landing at Anzac Cove, April 25th 1915 to gain time for reinforcements to arrive. It was to the 57th that Kemal issued his famous proclamation - "I am not ordering you to attack, I order you to die! In the time which passes until we die, other troops and commanders can take our place!"

they used some standard m16/17s and also had some with the front and side brims trimmed. theres a visorless m18 that was purportedly produced for turkey but theres no hard evidence of this nor were any delivered. you see pics of them mostly with post war german friekorps. theres some speculation that they were, in fact, produced for tank crews but theres no hard evidence of this either.

good episode, there's precious little about the turks out there. Osprey does a good monograph on them but the key element was night marish logistics combined with a stuborn nature created an army of soldiers who deserved better masters and should be remembered as more than just the 'baddies' in films like 'Lawrence of arabia' and 'the light horse'

Bf1 should have had a Ottoman soldier campaign. I haven't played bf1 much but I hated the campaign idea where I played as the Australian guy. That one I STRONGLY believed the player should have been one of the locals in Istanbul fending off the biggest naval bombardment in history. That would a lot more interesting and dramatic than listening to a Aussie speaking how bad ass he is when all he does is just runs around as a runner and is part of the team that failed at their objective. It just wasn't a good campaign representing Australians to me. That level was just a missed opportunity for Turkish people. I am not even Turkish and even I can recognized this.

"Australians are tough to kill." He states in one of the cinematic scenes. Just watch the videos on youtube. Honestly I don't mind characters stating stuff like this. Frankly when I realized after watching him act very patriotic and proud I said to myself, "Wait a minute. He's doing what a lot of none Americans always complain about Americans do in their media (games/movies)? Oh my f*cking gosh! This is what annoys them and complain about? Haha! What a bunch of over sensitive cry babies. I knew all along they were complaining because they had over sensitive egos and this proves it."

Poorly fought, fled from the battlefield on first day, and subsequently kept away from the critical portion of the front as an 'unreliable detachment') in which rate of the Arabs (mostly Syrian Arabs), Yazidis etc. hits nearly 60%. The vast majority of Ottoman soldiers were from Western Anatolia, Central Anatolia, and Eastern Thrace.

If you ever visited the military cemetery at Gallipoli, you must have seen people who were born in places like Beirut, Tripoli, Haifa, Tripoli, Jaffa etc lying dead. Also there were (naturally) many non-Muslim privates and officers. One infamous example is Captain Sarkis Torossian who was wounded in Gallipoli in 1915, went back to his hometown in Anatolia (Kayseri) and found out his whole family was murdered and so joined the Arab Revolt. Many Ottoman Armenians, Jews, Greeks and Assyrians also fought for their country and died defending it.

Excellent video, as always. You've done several videos on the uniforms of the various Armies, but the Great War was also a Naval war! As a U.S . Navy veteran (Vietnam), I'd love to see some episodes relating the roles played (for example, thanks to the U.S. Navy's convoy escorts, not one Doughboy lost his life to German U Boats crossing the pond), and on the uniforms of the various Navies, particularly the Royal Navy and the United States Navy. Without the Navy's defeat of the U Boats, and the blockade of Germany, the outcome of the War might have been different.

Thank you. I don't know what roles were played by the French, Italian, and other Navies, but I do know the German Imperial Navy, the Royal Navy, and the United States Navy all played key roles in the war, the United States Navy coming of age during the war, and even equaling the Royal Navy by war's end.

the whole "looking good" thing dates back to louis XIV, when the armies became more professional, dangerous and doubled in size. The gradual elimination of mercenaries and the rise of the National Army required new troops, a lot of them, and as you can imagine, trodding to the dirt only to stand in lines 30 meters apart and fire at each other is not a good selling point. After all: if morale fell, a line broke, and the battle was lost. Fancy, bright uniforms provided a great sell to the poorly clad and poorly fed peasants, who, often as a umptieth child had little to look forward to. On the other hand they created a sense of unity and uniformity, greatly enhancing discipline and boosting morale (regiments became tight knit micro-societies with their own songs, colours and prestige). And lastly of course it was a way for a ruler to show off, to make clear he was the best, the richest and that his troops were superior, if only in dress. Probably totally irrelevant in ww1, but seeing the mythos around the old guard, the black watch and other famous and distinct units, it is understandable, yet not excusable.
@twiliblade
@twiliblade 7 жыл бұрын
Ward Vermassen also fosters a sense of national pride and encourages further militarism, as these become popular figures back home which aided in recruitment and justifying the further commitments to wars, but as I said, it doesn't match up to the realities of modern war

I'm starting to see why Germany was blamed for WWI, they didn't start it but they kept their allies afloat in it. Without Germany the Ottomans would have lost sooner and the Austia-Hungarian's would have been all but self defeating. Germany is the one that was able to keep the war going for years.
@ColasTeam
@ColasTeam 7 жыл бұрын
+HovercraftHolidays yet, as has been covered in this show and other places, the Axis also had the initiative trying to negotiate peace, and the entente refused more than once. So it's unfair to say it was Germany keeping the war going, they weren't just going to surrender and let France, Russia and England walk over them, we all know what the entente conditions for ending the war were.
@gungriffen
@gungriffen 7 жыл бұрын
Zoltan Csikos First the one thing we have seen repeatedly without German Aid the Austria Hungarians couldn't fight there way out of a wet paper bag. And like I stated this was was caused by Austria Hungary to Germany's protest! Once in I don't blame them for fighting it out to the end but you can see how the Allies would have spent many months bitching that if it wasn't for Germany the war would be over. Austria-Hungary took severe causilties fighting Serbia alone, the Russian line was held with German support. After Austria Hungry and Ottomans surrendered all that was left was Germans who held out and fought hard against the allies. So I can see why they would be unhappy with Germany in the end.

Dear Indy and whole crew. Great product, with room for basic improvements. I am considering becoming a substantial patron. But with my ultimate goal to licensee this quality history education tool to over 33000 US high school classrooms. Indy needs to take advantage of the fact he is not wheel chair bound and become slightly animated upright in front of a grease pencil board in front of the map doing an old time weather man visual but with troop movement. This small adjustment will increase membership by 15 % in 2 months. Call me back when you want more tips.

As an addition to that, we know that the military history portion of our show (in terms of more detailed troop movements for more than just two scenes in the show) is something where we could improve. That's why it's also a stretch goal on Patreon to introduce a dedicated military history format to the show if we reach 20,000$ on Patreon. This would probably be a bit separated from the main format mainly because the time constraints Indy talked about in his comment.
